A LONG time resident of the Knotts Crossing Resort in Katherine has been hit in the face with a metal broom handle after he heard footsteps and went outside to investigate.

The man was inside the home he had built for himself when he was woken by footsteps on his roof on Tuesday about 4am, police said in a statement.

When he went outside to investigate, the well-liked 76-year-old resident was allegedly set upon by one of them.

Detective Senior Constable Karl Gunderson said it appeared the man had been hit in the face with a metal broom handle, leaving him with significant injuries.

He drove himself to Katherine Hospital but his injuries were so bad he was then flown to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The elderly resident has lived at the Knotts Crossing Resort in Katherine since at least 2006.

Resort manager Joanna Pace said the man's eye was badly hurt in the attack.

"He's a really nice guy who has been living here permanently for years. He takes real pride in the property and maintains his living areas beautifully; he's always out mowing," Ms Pace said.

She said the structure the man built at the caravan park was his home as much as any house.

Ms Pace said residents were shocked by the attack but life was going on as usual at the park.

Earlier in the night, the group was reportedly spotted by another woman at the park but they disappeared without any confrontation.

The males are described as of indigenous appearance.

It's thought there were at least three people involved.

A Royal Darwin Hospital spokeswoman yesterday said the man was in a stable condition. He is expected to be released from hospital in the coming days.

The broom stick attack follows the unrelated but equally disturbing golf club attack on an 87-year-old woman in Alice Springs, which left the victim with facial injuries and a broken tooth.

The alleged assailant, a 15-year-old boy, was the third youth arrested over the crime on February 17.

It was the second time the elderly woman's home had been targeted by callous thieves in a week

In the latest round of crime statistics for Katherine, assault figures remained steady while house break-ins had increased 20 per cent. Commercial break-ins fell 26 per cent and property damage was up 13 per cent.

A TEEN accused of throwing a rock which smashed the back window of a passing St John Ambulance in Alice Springs has been charged by police.

The 17-year-old was charged with a property damage offence after the rock was thrown at 3pm yesterday.

Acting Superintendent Peter Dash said the teen was arrested a short time after the incident.

"Emergency service personnel were responding to an incident when a rock was allegedly thrown at the ambulance, smashing the rear window," he said.

He was charged with damaging property, endangering occupants of vehicles or vessels and being armed with an offensive weapon.

He was bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court today.

FOREIGN travel advisories are increasingly warning tourists against visiting Alice Springs, following a spate of tragedies involving international travellers.
The central Australian town is featured in several European and UK travel advisories updated in the last year.

Germany tells its residents that caution is needed in Alice Springs, "especially in the dark" because of repeated armed robberies and rapes of foreign tourists.
The UK also advises its citizens to take care in the town centre of Alice Springs at night, due to harassment, robberies and attacks including sexual assault.
"There have been some serious sexual assaults against British nationals," says the UK advisory.
Canada warns against hitchhiking because of the risk to backpackers, and Italy warns of serious risks to tourists travelling alone in the Northern Territory.

"It is not recommended to rent a car to visit the particular areas of interest of the Northern Territory (Ayers Rock and Alice Springs) or areas far from population centres, as the roads are particularly dangerous and a number of tourists have died as a result," reads the Italian Government warning.
It follows a series of tragic incidents including the exposure-related deaths of two elderly German tourists last month, the stabbing murder of a French tourist last year, and the horrific rapes of German and Finnish backpackers in 2012.
Backpackers have also been the target of carjackings and robberies in the remote town.
Statistics from Tourism Research Australia show the dangerous reputation of the area has already taken a toll.
In the past 10 years, international visitors to the Northern Territory plunged from 354,659 to 292,958 last year, with the biggest falls among UK visitors (78,450 to 41,342) and Scandinavian tourists down from 12,229 to 6660.

BREAK-INS to Darwin businesses increased by 90 per cent in the year to January, in startling crime statistics released by the NT Police on Friday.

More than 100 criminals have been arrested for property offences since January, an indication those numbers will remain high in future releases.

The latest crime numbers, from January 2016 to January 2017, take in part of a holiday crime spree that saw scores of businesses targeted.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Matt Hollamby said resources for property crime unit Strike Force Trident were strengthened to cope with the crime wave.

"There was a crime spike during the months of January and February, particularly in Darwin," he said.
"Police resources are applied where they are most needed and additional officers were assigned to Strike Force Trident to combat the immediate issue.
"Property crime figures in the NT including Darwin have been consistently low over the past two to three years and our current crime statistics are being benchmarked against these low figures that have been achieved in recent years."
The statistics stand in stark contrast to Labor MLA Jeff Collins's claims in Parliament that reporting on crime was just hyperbole and created a culture of fear.

The organiser of the Palmerston Community Meeting on Crime, Serena Dalton, said those comments would disappoint those who have fallen victim to break-ins.
Ms Dalton held two recent meetings with more than 250 Palmerston residents concerned about rising crime rates.
