TROUBLED AFL star Liam Jurrah has been refused bail after being charged with four counts of aggravated assault.

The 24-year-old was allegedly involved in a violent incident at a 24-hour shop in Alice Springs early yesterday, just days after he was acquitted of a serious harm charge in the NT Supreme Court.

Jurrah and another man, aged 33, have been charged with four counts of aggravated assault over the incident on Gap Rd.

THE man who helped his best mate abduct a woman from a domestic violence shelter was "boasting" about his crime to the victim, the NT Surpreme Court heard.

Patrick "Paddy" Briston, 19, was found guilty for his role in the abduction of Monique Edmondson last August and sentenced to eight years and two months in prison with a non-parole period of four years and one month.

Justice Judith Kelly said Briston had a "warped value system" where a "perverse loyalty" to Joshua Walsh was more important than the life of Ms Edmondson.

"You knew there was a strong chance Ms Edmondson would be murdered yet you went along," she said.

"Even when Walsh waved the gun in her face and told her to open her mouth you did nothing."

A DARWIN hairdresser who was assaulted outside her shop said violence had escalated since the Nightcliff police beat was scrapped.

Ally Fitzgerald, who has owned Ally's Barber Shop for 10 years, said the public drunkenness, violence and anti-social behaviour was the worst it had been in years.

Ms Fitzgerald said business owners had met to discuss the problem on Thursday night and when she got to work yesterday morning there were about 12 people causing trouble in the arcade.
"As they walked through they were knocking all the signs over," she said.

"I just went out and really politely ... said 'can you please leave the signs alone'.

"One lady tried to throw the sign at me and then tried to punch me in the face but I managed to grab hold of her arm."    Ms Fitzgerald said when the police beat was in place, officers would walk through the centre about five times a day - meaning the troublemakers either stayed away, were moved on or were better behaved.

"The problem had almost disappeared during the day," she said.

"Obviously because it was working they weren't getting people ringing them all the time so they scrapped it.

"I'd love for it to be reinstated."

Ms Fitzgerald said she had lost customers - particularly elderly people and parents with young children - who did not want to listen to foul language and risk being harassed.

She said the police beat was more effective in controlling drunks than the Banned Drinker Register, which had only helped "a little bit" and meant she had been offered up to $50 to buy someone on the register a $30 bottle of spirits.

   THE Territory's problem drunks will be forced into treatment for 12 weeks under new laws.
They will be housed in four secure rehabilitation centres - in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and the remote Nhulunbuy.

Two more centres will soon be added - in Tennant Creek and on the Tiwi Islands.
Up to 800 alcoholics a year will be treated. Police are expected to step up patrols in troublespots and take more drunks into protective custody.

Alcohol Rehabilitation Minister Robyn Lambley said she fully expects a legal challenge to the laws - but would the Government would win.

"Some people won't like this," Ms Lambley said today."It's ground breaking – the first in Australia".
"Territorians are fed up with the levels of anti-social behaviour and violence on the streets and they want their Government to implement real measures that work," she said.

"Every year, thousands of problem drinkers are picked up by police - only to be placed in police protective custody and then released back out on the street to continue drinking and anti-social behaviour.

"Our mandatory rehabilitation measures will ensure habitual drunks are off the streets and receiving meaningful treatment."

The Government has dropped the plan to build rehabilitation centres.

Instead, they will be in existing buildings - the Darwin centre will be in the unused Medi-Hotel at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Drunks will be sent to a Alcohol Mandatory Treatment Tribunal for assessment after being taken into protective custody three times in two months.

Rehabilitation will include treatment and training in life skills and work readiness.

Ms Lambley wants the tribunal to have the power to recommend that welfare payments are "managed", but this would need federal backing.

Territory police issued 19,000 protective custody orders last year - 3000 were repeat offenders.
One drunk was taken to sobering-up shelters 117 times.

"Our new rehabilitation model will provide repeat problem drinkers with a real chance to break the cycle of alcohol abuse and harm," Ms Lambley said.

The Territory has the highest per capita alcohol consumption in Australia, one-and-a-half times the national average.

NAUGHTY children throwing rocks at cars have the "potential to cause serious injury", a Territory police officer has said.
Acting Senior Sergeant Drew Slape yesterday urged victims and witnesses to the boredom-induced crime spate to come forward.
"Please call us on 131 444 - do not report on Facebook," he said.
"We believe there may be more people whose property was damaged who have not told police what happened.
"Unfortunately, there is no explanation as to why they were throwing rocks - it appears to be a case of youths roaming."
Sen-Sgt Slape said police wanted to hear from anyone with more information after five kids were arrested on Saturday.
He said police had "numerous" reports that the boys - aged between 11 and 14 - had been launching rocks at cars in Alice Springs.
The driver of a Ford F100 reported one of his side panels had been damaged near Railway Tce about noon.
Four of the minors were released from custody when police nosed out the alleged perpetrator.
A 12-year-old boy was yesterday waiting for a youth diversion file to be submitted before his release.
In February, the NT Government suggested placing floodlights outside the Gap in a bid to prevent rocks being thrown at cars.
Last year Alice Springs radio personality Bruce Davenport had his jaw broken when he was hit with a rock by an unknown attacker.
A Greyhound driver with a bus full of passengers managed to keep control when three rocks were thrown at his window at Birdum, 456km north of Tennant Creek.
And youths smashed an ambulance window as it took a pregnant mum to hospital.
