ESCAPED killer Jeffrey Ahwon forgot he was eligible for parole 10 months ago.


Instead of walking out of the Darwin Correctional Centre with a stamp on his release forms, Mr Ahwon walked out when the guards weren't looking 15 days ago and has sparked a lengthy manhunt.

In addition taxpayers will now likely have to fork out an extra $130,000 for Ahwon to serve the remaining two years and seven months of his sentence. He also faces a maximum of three more years in prison for escaping custody.

Ahwon has not been seen since his escape despite a team of eight NT police investigators co-ordinating a round the clock manhunt for him.

Recapturing Ahwon, 20, remains a high priority for police who are still in contact with Ahwon's family and associates.

Ahwon was one of three teenagers who bashed 39-year-old Rick Dermody at Casuarina Square Shopping Centre in 2013.

NT Police have charged a 26-year-old*COON* man accused of committing an armed robbery with an axe at the Karama Shopping Centre on Sunday.


Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland from Strike Force Trident said the man entered a supermarket in the shopping centre and allegedly stole a can of deodorant and soap.

"When he was approached and challenged by staff, the man lifted his shirt and produced an axe," he said.

"He then walked through the shopping centre, hitting an ATM with the axe and yelling at members of the public."


Police attended the scene and arrested the man, who was found in possession of a small quantity of cannabis.

The man was charged with multiple offences including aggravated robbery and causing damage to property


Bloody dumb boong! Who else would go out and do an armed robbery with an axe for soap and deodorant. He probably needed the deodorant to chrome with ... the soap? well matter how much soap the coons have they'll stink!

Two men have been charged after two houses were broken into in the Tennant Creek area last week.


The men, aged 18 and 26, are accused of stealing food and alcohol from a Maloney Street residence on February 19 before the older male allegedly stole alcohol from another house the following evening while the occupant was asleep inside.

The 26-year-old was observed in possession of two wine bottles nearby the property and was caught after a short foot chase before admitting his involvement in the previous day's break-in.


The 18-year-old male was arrested later that night for drink-driving before he was identified as the co-offender in the February 19 unlawful entry.

The 26-year-old was charged with four counts of aggravated unlawful entry, four counts of stealing and two counts of damaging property.

He will appear in Alice Springs Magistrates Court today along with his alleged co-offender, who was charged with damaging property, aggravated unlawful entry and stealing.

A WOMANBoong is fighting for her life after suffering a crushed skull during an attack with a hammer.


Emergency services were called to the Abbott Community on South Tce in Alice Springs at 1am.

Territory Duty Superintendent James O'Brien said the woman was taken to hospital and would be evacuated to Royal Adelaide Hospital this morning.

AN ELDERLY woman who was the victim of a home invasion and threatened with a machete wants to leave the Territory because the Department of Housing won't give her a new house.


Rita Fisher, 72, has lived in her two-bedroom public housing home in Moulden for 15 years and was left traumatised after her three intoxicated neighbours Box monsters allegedly hurled death threats and bricks from her gate, smashed her front sliding door with an electrical fan, a walker and a paver, hit her dog over the head, and entered her house with a machete on November 23.

"They were standing there at my gate yelling, 'I'm going to f***ing kill you, you old c***'," Ms Fisher recalled.



Police arrived at the scene that night and arrested one person who lived in a DoH house next to Ms Fisher's.

She said the incident, in which her 44-year-old son and carer protected her, left them both mentally and emotionally upset, and she was left with little option but to leave the Territory.

"We're packing up and moving interstate," Ms Fisher said. "We're losing sleep, all of the dogs are barking from parties on the street, we don't know if someone is coming into the yard."

Fugitive AnimalJeffrey Ahwon has been caught 20 days after escaping from Darwin Correctional Centre.


Ahwon, 19, was arrested at a Woodroffe unit by Northern Territory Police this afternoon without incident.

Police received a tip-off from a member of the public.

Ahwon has been returned to the Darwin Correctional Centre at Holtze. He has been on the run since February 5, with guards not noticing he was missing until he failed to present at morning muster the following day.

NEIGHBOURS have told the NT News they heard screams from the street at 11pm near where a man's body was found in Darwin Tuesday night.


NT Major Crimes detectives were yesterday investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the man boong, whose body was discovered in a laneway on Milkwood Crescent in Karama.


Police set up a crime scene at the location on Tuesday night, where blood stains remained visible on the bitumen yesterday.

A MAN *black bugger*who allegedly attacked two backpackers and stole their belongings in Alice Springs has been arrested by police.

The 20-year-old is believed to be one of two people who robbed and attacked the backpackers at 5.30am on Traeger Ave earlier this month.

The victims' backpacks, which contained personal items, cash and electronic equipment, were stolen.

The family of a woman who died in police custody have defied Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander custom and requested footage of her death be released so "that the entire world will see racist Australia for what it truly is."

Ms Dhu, a 22-year-old Yamatji woman, died while in police custody at Port Hedland after a severe infection to a broken rib had turned septic on 4 August, 2014.

She was arrested two days before her death and detained at South Hedland lock-up over $3,622 in unpaid court fines.

Ms Dhu was taken to the Hedland health campus twice in the two days leading up to her death, where doctors declared she was fit to be held in custody.

The Northern Territory's health minister has accused Gurrumul's music label of using his recent health crisis as publicity for a new album.

John Elferink said the Aboriginal singer received the finest care when he was admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital over Easter with internal bleeding relating to his ongoing liver and kidney problems, but Gurrumul's doctor and manager have accused staff of leaving him to bleed for more than eight hours, and of racially profiling him as a drinker.

"Frankly to extrapolate that racism and racial profiling is pervasive in the NT health system because a doctor makes a notation about previous alcohol abuse is nothing shy of lunacy," Mr Elferink told ABC local radio.

"The Skinnyfish organisation continues to orate issues of racial abuse at about the time when their talent is about to release albums or is on the touring circuit."  [more ...]
