AN ambulance officer was left complaining of pain to the ribs and arm after she was allegedly assaulted by an 18-year-old man in Alice Springs. 
 
Police believe the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs when he was found sitting in the middle of the Stuart Highway, near Palm Circuit, about 9pm Tuesday.

Southern Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Siiri Tennosaar said the man "became confrontational" and kicked out at the officers when they stopped the ambulance to help.

He then threw rocks at them and the ambulance.

Police attended and the man was arrested.


It's the second attack on first responders in two nights in the town, after two police officers were assaulted by a group of people in West Side on Monday night.

Acting Superintendent Virginia Read said police were responding to a disturbance in the West Side of the town about 11.30pm and arrested an 18-year-old man on an outstanding warrant.

She said a 16-year-old girl attempted to free him, before two men aged 37 and 34 approached the officers armed with a frying pan and a broomstick.

"It is alleged one of the males struck an officer with the broomstick while projectiles were thrown at both," she said.

As the paddywagon was leaving, the 16-year-old threw a crate at the windscreen, causing it to smash.

She was arrested and charged with recklessly endangering occupants of the vehicle, criminal damage, armed with an offensive weapon and assault

A DISTRAUGHT Darwin mother-of-two and long-time Territorian has told of her mental and physical trauma after she was king-hit while serving customers at a Fannie Bay supermarket. 
 
Doulla Giallouris, 51, was punched in the left eye in the incident, leaving her with a severe hairline fracture.

The shocking attack, which was recorded by Fannie Bay IGA's CCTV footage, has led to owner Manuel Kotis calling on community leaders to urgently address increasing violent crime in Darwin, saying this was the fourth assault at his store in two years.

A man, 24, has been charged with assault, unlawfully causing serious harm and stealing, and appeared at Darwin Magistrates Court yesterday, where he was remanded in custody until further mention in October.

The confronting footage shows shocked customers watching on as Mrs Giallouris was attacked while behind the counter at 10am yesterday.


She had confronted the customer for allegedly stealing tins of food, which he can be seen on camera removing from his pockets.

He then turns to leave the store before returning, leaning over the counter and punching Mrs Giallouris, who was taken by ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital.

"Every time I close my eyes I see him ... and I keep thinking, 'What if he had a knife or gun'," an emotional Mrs Giallouris told the NT News exclusively from her home yesterday.

Mrs Giallouris, who has worked at the supermarket for more than 10 years, will require ongoing eye specialist treatment.

Police are investigating an aggravated robbery which occurred at Taperoo overnight.

Just after 6.30pm, a 33-year-old woman from Taperoo was walking along Moldavia Walk when she was approached by a man and a woman who punched her before stealing her handbag containing a mobile phone and cash.

The first suspect is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, about 30 years, medium build, 175cm tall and short brown hair. 

He was wearing a black hooded jumper.

The second suspect is described as being Caucasian, slim build, about 175cm tall with long brown hair.  She was wearing a green hooded tracksuit top and grey tracksuit pants.

The victim received minor injuries to her face and was treated at the scene by ambulance crews.

POLICE are hunting for three men who indecently assaulted a woman in North Adelaide.

The woman was walking along Hackney Rd, near the intersection of Bundeys Rd, when she was approached by three men just after 3am on Sunday.

She was indecently assaulted and sustained minor injuries from the attack.


The three men were last seen walking west through Tidlangga Park adjacent to Bundeys Rd.


One suspect is described as being of African or Aboriginal appearance with dark complexion, slim build, 175cm tall with short, dark, shaved hair and a dark goatee beard.

He was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top and jeans.

The other two men were also described as being of African or Aboriginal appearance and about 175cm tall.[/

TWO young boys who are fighting for their lives after crashing a quad bike into an open storm drain in Leanyer have been identified as junior footy players Joseph (JoJo) Gibia, 18, and Romone Lewin, 15. 
 
The teens were found unconscious in a 3m deep culvert among the wreckage of a quad bike on Sunday morning.

Police had responded to reports of hooning in the area when they made the shocking discovery around 6am.

The boys were transported by St John Ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital where they have remained unresponsive in the intensive care unit.

Royal Darwin Hospital spokesman Jason Gates said they were in a serious but stable condition on Monday.


Owner of the stolen quad bike Ryan Sperrer, 29, said he was disturbed by online comments that suggested the boys had received "karma" for riding the quad bike that had vanished from his father's property in Knuckeys Lagoon weeks earlier.

Anyone who saw the video footage of long-time Territorian and well-known Fannie Bay shop assistant Doulla Giallouris king-hit by a customer last week should be shocked to their core. 


 
Because no person should ever be subjected to something as traumatic as this in their lifetime, at their workplace. Or anywhere really.

Sadly this type of repulsive attack is not an aberration in Darwin.

It is, however, the confronting face of what many long-term residents are saying is a rise in violent crime across the Territory as attacks – often fuelled by alcohol and drug rage – become more frequent and attackers become more brazen.



Last week a St John Ambulance paramedic was attacked while she was on night shift in Alice Springs.

A couple of months ago a Darwin bouncer was left fighting for his life after being attacked while at work at a popular night spot.

I have lost count of the number of bus driver attack stories I have reported on since I began working at the NT News.

It's not just happening at work. Last year one of my elderly relatives was attacked and mugged after stopping his vehicle to help an apparent broken down car in suburban Leanyer in the middle of the day. Turns out the group in this vehicle was just looking to rob someone decent enough to stop and offer them a hand.

I haven't even touched on the scourge afflicting this city that is domestic violence.

Rising assaults is something the NT Government says it was chartered with tackling upon coming to office in 2012, scrapping Labor's Banned Drinkers Register (BDR) and introducing mandatory sentencing laws which set minimum terms of imprisonment for those who commit serious offences.

The legislation was introduced following a spate of attacks on taxi drivers, and means a first-time serious offender will cop an immediate three-month jail term.

Attorney-General John Elferink says assaults have gone up and down since 2010, with peaks in 2013 and 2014, conceding tougher domestic violence reporting rules and more awareness on reporting obligations have contributed to much of the rise.

He is adamant tougher sentencing measures and a supposed new-found aggression in "getting the bastards" will make an impact.

But Labor Opposition Leader Michael Gunner says the focus very clearly needs to be on cutting alcohol for problem drinkers at the point of sale – much like the BDR did.

He has promised to bring back the contentious scheme if re-elected next year.

In the last year alone in Darwin assaults shot up by 6.5 per cent and alcohol was involved in around 60 per cent of these.

Elferink makes some valid points about the need for tough mandatory sentencing measures to punish serious offenders. Sometimes it should strictly be about the punishment because a crime is so heinous that rehabilitation shouldn't be the first thought afforded to a criminal. I absolutely agree with that, and this latest attack on Doulla makes me more resolved on people paying the consequence for their actions.

But, at the same time, the Government must concede that it is not making any headway with alcohol-related anti-social and violent behaviour in the Top End.
