A VICTIM of a Smithfield home invasion overnight has fought back, stabbing one of three armed men who had stormed into his house.                                       
About 11.45pm last night, police were called to a house in Blackham Cres, after reports three men armed with knives and a blunt object had assaulted the victim and stolen jewellery and a mobile phone.
The resident allegedly fought back, stabbing one of the victims in the torso.
He also was injured and was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital for treatment of a stab wound to his arm.
A 2.30am, police went to the Modbury Hospital, where a man was being treated for stab wounds to his torso and hand.
Investigations continue to determine whether he was linked to the home invasion.
Neighbours said they heard screams and cries of help shortly after 12.30am in  Blackham Crs, the same street where a teenager was beaten and shot in the thigh in February for breaking into an adult book shop next to a tattoo parlour.

"I was was watching TV and I heard someone call out for help," resident Gerey Dawe said.

"It's pretty sad really - a bloke was shot here not long ago and the Snowtown house (previously occupied by former accused killer Mark Haydon and his murdered wife victim Elizabeth) is also on this street.

Mr Dawe said he knew the occupant of the house and he felt very sorry for anyone put in his situation.

"It's horrible," he said.

"It's sad that we have to protect ourselves in our own home.  (He's) a nice, quiet person. You don't have much choice when you're put in that situation.

"It's pretty sad that you can be in your own home and have three blokes come in with knives or whatever they had - it's three against one and the damage has been done."

A woman, believed to be the occupant's girlfriend, returned to the victim's home this morning, smashing a window and gaining access to the property before hurling abuse at media and taking off in a late model Nissan Skyline.

The three men involved in the home invasion are described as being of Aboriginal appearance. The first suspect was wearing a grey hooded jumper and dark coloured pants, and was aged in his late 20s.

A MAN has allegedly punched a female police officer to the ground in Alice Springs.
Watch Commander Siiri Tennosaar said the officer and her male partner were flagged down by a woman on Dixon Rd about 6.30pm.
She said as the officers were speaking to the woman, when a 27-year-old man allegedly punched the female officer in the face, knocking her to the ground.



Gee who in their right mind in Alice Springs would just attack the police out of thin blue air?

POLICE will pay $900 of former AFL star Liam Jurrah's legal fees for the assault case brought against him last month.                                       
Jurrah's lawyer Jo Caracoussis appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrate Court today without the former Melbourne Football Club player, who is on bail in Alice Springs awaiting trial for separate assault charges.
SA Police today agreed to pay $900 in legal fees to Jurrah's lawyers.
Jurrah, 24, was charged with assaulting his partner in Elizabeth North on January 29, but the charges were dropped earlier this month.
Jurrah has also been banned from driving for two years                and fined $2000 for driving at more than five times the legal limit at Para Hills in January.
He will face separate assault charges involving three women in the Alice Springs Magistrates court on June 12.

SIX children subjected to starvation and torture in Adelaide's so-called House of Horrors case were "virtually unknown'' to state authorities, it has emerged.                                       
When police uncovered the Housing Trust home - where six adults and 21 children lived - they said it was infested with swarms of cockroaches, flies and maggots, and faeces was found on the floor.
               
Today - five years after the shocking discovery of the abuse at the Parafield Gardens home - the government released its response to 32 recommendations by the Child Death and Serious Injury Review Committee into the shocking case.
Committee chairwoman Deej Eszenyi this morning said there was "almost no information known about the children to state authorities'' until their condition was revealed in 2008.

Neither the committee's recommendations nor the government's response identify any of the systematic failings by authorities to intervene in the child abuse.
However, at a press conference this morning, both Ms Eszenyi and Child Development Minister Jennifer Rankine identified poor information-sharing practices between government agencies as a major contributor.
Ms Rankine said no one government staff member or agency "had the full picture of information or knew that the six children were in the house''.
Ms Eszenyi confirmed that no report was collated which brought together details of the case or how those involved acted.
"Our job is not to look for 'did anybody do anything wrong?','' she said.
"Something went very wrong for these children. The question is how do state authorities know that that is happening?''
Child protection expert Freda Briggs said better inter-agency and cross-state communication would be key to improving child protection in future.
She criticised the lack of a report into the circumstances of the case.
"We are being deprived of information about what went wrong despite different agencies being responsible for the children's situation,'' she said.
"The bottom line seems to be the claim that no-one did anything wrong ... rather than providing an identification of what went wrong.''

The committee reviewed more than 200 documents, such as child truancy alerts and Housing SA and health records, relating to all those who lived in the house but said there was scarce evidence of the existence of the six children, who moved to Adelaide from Victoria not long before the case was exposed.


Ms Rankine said no government worker had been sacked following the case.


She said the government had delayed the release of the recommendations because the media would have criticised it for releasing them without a response.


Opposition child development spokesman David Pisoni said the government had spent the seven months since it received the recommendations "preparing a political response''.
"The government has focused on covering up rather than fixing up,'' he said.
"The government must explain why it took seven months to release these recommendations and what the recommendations were based on.''
When the government received the recommendations in October, a "high-level'' meeting of Health, Education, Housing and Police ministers was convened, although Ms Rankine - who was then Police Minister - had to pull out at the last minute and sent her chief of staff.


It was revealed in The Advertiser a welfare worker saw the conditions inside the house but did not raise the alarm                .

However, Ms Rankine this morning said the worker did not sight the children and remained out the front of the house.

She said no disciplinary action was taken against the worker because she did not visit the house in the course of her work.


This is despite Ms Rankine stating everyone had a "moral" obligation to report child abuse if they witnessed it.

The government says legal considerations prevent it from revealing who was responsible, or specifically how the system failed the five children )                who were starved, bashed and tortured at the Casuarina Drv home.
It was also not revealed if any public servant from any agency has been counselled, reprimanded or sacked as a result of the committee's inquiry.

Five adults were convicted and jailed for the abuse and all the children were placed under the guardianship of the Minister of Child Development.
In the government response, Ms Rankine said "the law requires that information disclosed to the committee about individual cases be kept confidential''.
"In the five years since the case was discovered, the government has put in place many measures to prevent this type of tragedy from occurring again,'' Ms Rankine wrote.
The committee recommendations include that:
HOUSING SA staff receive additional training "about indicators of poor living conditions''
WHEN Housing SA receives complaints about poor living conditions it investigates whether children are living in these houses
THE education department "strengthen'' the reporting of children who fail to attend school once enrolled.
WHEN Families SA is notified of child neglect it "sights the children to confirm their well-being''.
ALL staff in hospitals and community health services complete Child Safe Environment training.
The government said it accepted these recommendations.
HOW THE HOUSE OF HORRORS TRAGEDY UNFOLDED               
POLICE were alerted to the shocking neglect on June 22, 2008, when one of the children was taken to hospital, starved and badly bruised.
THEY uncovered the "House of Horrors'' on Casuarina Drv at Parafield Gardens, where six adults and 21 children were living.
POLICE described the house as abhorrent and the smell as putrid. It was infested with swarms of cockroaches, flies and maggots, and faeces was found on the floor.
THE court heard shocking details of children being starved and abused while police described the home as a prisoner of war camp.
FIVE people, including the children's mother, were found guilty of abuse and neglect and given custodial sentences ranging from six to 10 years. A sixth person was found not guilty by reason of mental incompetence.

IT has just gone dark, on Monday, May 13. Three kids jump the fence into a mechanic's workshop, on the main drag through Tennant Creek, on the Northern Territory's main highway.
As they walk across the yard, CCTV footage reveals they are girls.
They are petrol sniffers, aged 13, looking for a hit that could leave them brain-damaged, wheelchair-bound, or dead.
They find it in the tank of a ride-on mower, in for repairs. One of the girls removes the cap to the fuel tank and inhales deeply.
Another girl takes her turn. Then they return for more.
The confronting images, obtained by News Limited, depict a regular event in Tennant Creek and nearby Ali Curung, which over the last 12 months have seen major sniffing outbreaks.     Some estimate there are up to 100 active sniffers, but the two towns are not included in the federal government's national map of known "sniffing zones".
There has reportedly been a massive decline in Central Australia and northwest WA since the rollout of the low-aromatic, less harmful Opal fuel, but stubborn service stations still refuse to stock the product, claiming customers don't like it.
Unleaded is available in Tennant Creek, though the 2013 review into the national Petrol Sniffing Strategy reports a "significant relationship between the distance from each community to the nearest ULP outlet, and the size of the decrease in the prevalence of sniffing at each community".
Petrol sniffing has almost been obliterated in Alice Springs and surrounding communities since the introduction of Opal, but there has been a sharp rise in the use of inhalants such as aerosol deodorants.
The review notes that in the 80s and 90s, sniffing in remote communities had reached epidemic proportions. "Many have died, and others have permanent brain damage," says the report.
The scourge, which had been prematurely declared beaten, is back.
Darrin Whatley, who owns the Tennant Creek workshop, said last year it was boys jumping his fence looking for fuel. Now it's girls.
"It's sickening," he says. "The girls need help, support and education and no one's doing anything about it."
The PSS review notes that there were few treatment facilities for sniffers and difficulties mandating their treatment.
The three Tennant Creek girls were not ordered into treatment or protective custody but given trespass notices.
"Sniffing itself is not a crime," says Tennant Creek's senior sergeant Des Green.
"Supplying petrol is. We often come across people in the process of sniffing or affected by sniffing. We take them straight into care, to the hospital."

A TEENAGER who allegedly stole a yellow 4WD and broke into houses has been arrested in a Territory town.
Watch Commander Siiri Tennosaar said the 15-year-old boy was tracked down after a string of property crimes were reported in Alice Springs early this morning.
She said police were unsure if he was the only offender.
"There may be cases where people are unaware offenders have tried to break into their homes," Senior Sergeant Tennosaar said.
"They may have tampered with vehicles, and they may discover that this morning."
The boy was suspected to have been involved in unlawful entries at houses on Raggett St and Cycad Pl, in the town's east, between 1am and 3am.
