A TEENAGER has escaped from the Alice Springs detention centre just days after two offenders escaped from Darwin's Don Dale juvenile detention centre. 
 
Jason Patrick Reid, 16, reportedly escaped from the centre at 5pm Friday.

NT Police Acting Superintendent Virginia Read said he was wearing a black singlet, black tracksuit pants and white sandshoes.

"Jason Reid was last sighted just south of the Alice Springs Detention Centre running into bushland," she said.






   A police spokeswoman said he had been detained on "a number of serious charges" but refused to provide further details.

Acting Superintendent Read said the public should not approach Mr Reid.

Police suspect Mr Reid may have stolen a white Toyota Troop Carrier from nearby the detention centre.

The vehicle is has an orange light on the roof and is registered in the NT. It's registration is 773481.

The breakout follows a week of chaos for the Territory's juvenile detention system, where two inmates trashed the Don Dale Detention Centre in Darwin, before escaping, stealing a car, and driving back through the detention centre gates.

Those escapees have since been charged, and have sparked calls for tighter security at the ageing Darwin facility.

POLICE have renewed calls for fugitive Ronald Kelly to hand himself in on the back of revelations he has been taunting police through Palmerston and the northern suburbs. 
 
Kelly has been on the run since eluding police in a six-hour siege in Gray last month.

Police believe he may be armed after he allegedly stole a cache of weapons and ammunition from a gun safe in a home in Fannie Bay.

Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan said police had "engaged" Kelly on a number of occasions, including car and foot chases.

The latest was overnight on Sunday.


Acting Supt Morgan said on all occasions, the "elusive" Kelly had slipped away after police called off the chase.

"A lot of these sightings are at night, and we don't want to put Mr Kelly or police at risk of injury," Acting Supt Morgan said. "If the situation becomes dangerous, it's safest for everyone to terminate – whether it be a car chase or foot pursuit.

"Him running and jumping fences at night puts him and police at risk of injury."

He said all sightings had been in Palmerston or the northern suburbs.

Police believed he may have been involved in several property offences, including car thefts, in the past weeks.

Acting Supt Morgan said police were now "ramping up" efforts to find him.

"The search is tying up a lot of resources that could be used to investigate other matters; that's why we're now ramping up these efforts to bring the situation to an end quicker."

Police and Crime Stoppers have offered a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the 22-year-old.

AN AMBUSH stabbing in Driver has left a young family worried for their safety, with a suspect now on the run from police. 
 
25-year-old Linton Baird and his brother-in-law had just arrived home when a man allegedly set upon the pair and stabbed Linton twice in the back.

Mr Baird's two young children were upstairs with their grandmother Amelia Anderson during the attack.

"I heard this horrendous scream," she said.

"I had no choice but to lock the door, he had no choice but to run and keep running."


Ms Anderson said her son Linton knows his alleged attacker, but that she had never met him.

"This came completely out of the blue, I moved here because it's a safe, peaceful neighbourhood," she said.

Police arrived within minutes of receiving a call, shortly after 7.30pm on Thursday.

A next door neighbour performed first aid on Mr Baird, who was bleeding heavily.

Mr Baird was taken by ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he was in a stable condition before being discharged on Friday.

"He's in a lot of pain, and he's pretty groggy from all the painkillers," Ms Anderson said.

On Friday morning, Ms Anderson had the grizzly task of hosing blood stains from the garage and veranda floors at the Mahoney Circuit house.

"We don't feel safe here with the little ones," Ms Anderson said of her grandchildren, aged six and three.

Doctors told Ms Anderson that her son had two stab wounds - one in the upper back and a deeper one in his lower back.

Ms Anderson said she has been inundated with support from her extended family.

"We've had calls from all over Darwin, Alice Springs, everyone just wanting to do whatever they can to help," she said.

"The Indigenous community is so close, especially in Darwin, it's a small place and people will have their eyes peeled (for the attacker)."

Northern Territory Police Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison said an investigation into the incident is underway.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Akers said police are working with witnesses to establish a clear version of events.

A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after he allegedly broke into an Alice Springs home and stole a bank card, which he then used at six different stores on a $550 shopping spree. 
 
Detective Superintendent Brent Warren said the man allegedly broke into a vehicle and a home at Larapinta on May 10, where he stole a bank card, sunglasses and keys.

"Police allege the offender used the bank card at six different stores in Alice Springs CBD to purchase food items and clothing totalling $550," he said.

The man was arrested on Thursday and was charged with stealing, interfere with a motor vehicle and six counts of criminal deception.

He will appear in Alice Springs Magistrates Court on July 19.

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was killed by a gunshot to the head while driving in the northern suburbs on Saturday morning.

The NT News understands the man was Fabian Brock, who crashed his vehicle through two fences on Lee Point Rd in Wagaman after he was shot.

NT Police confirmed that a male driver of a gold-coloured Toyota Camry had been shot in the head while driving along Union Tce.

They were alerted to the incident at 2.35am on Saturday after he crashed his vehicle on two Lee Point Rd properties.


Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan said when police attended the scene, they found that the driver had suffered a fatal gunshot wound prior to the crash.

Police believe that it is unlikely to be a random act and a second vehicle may have been involved.

"The offender remains outstanding and it is possible he or she is still armed which poses a risk to the community," Superintendent Morgan said.

"Police are urging the offender to phone Police and arrange a safe surrender. In the interest of ensuring everybody's safety this matter needs to be resolved quickly."

Police are calling for information from the public.



The driver's identity has not yet been released, and the male passenger is currently helping police with their inquiries.

Police are currently looking for a second vehicle. It is not known at this stage whether the shot was fired from the second car or from inside the driver's vehicle.

The owner of one of the Lee Point Rd properties said she had heard what sounded like a gunshot but didn't think too much of it.

ONE of two youths being held in Darwin's adult prison threatened to kill himself after the magistrate ordered they stay there until Tuesday.



It followed an unsuccessful attempt by lawyers for both boys — who cannot be named — to have them moved back to the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

John Lawrence QC said the pair were subjected to "horrific" conditions after being taken into custody on June 2 under an emergency order.

Mr Lawrence said for 10 days the boys had been kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day and forced to eat hot meals with their hands.

Attendees at the Youth Justice Court also saw the boys, who appeared by videolink from the jail, had been forced to wear belts that tied their arms and feet together.


Magistrate Elizabeth Morris noted the concerns of the boys' lawyers but said she would remand them in the adult jail for four more nights.

Ms Morris said there were several reasons for her decision, one being an affidavit written by Don Dale management that claimed the facility was not suitable to house the two accused.

It stated the roof of C Block where they would be held was riddled with asbestos.

The affidavit also claimed a lack of infrastructure upgrades meant there was a "high" risk of escape, staff were not adequately trained, and there was a "high to extreme" risk of assaults on staff.

Ms Morris said she did not think C Block was appropriate for anyone's detention.

Ms Morris adjourned the matter to Tuesday, when all parties would debate an application by the Department of Public Prosecutions to keep the boys in adult jail while their matters are before the court.

Ms Morris told the two boys her decision to keep them in jail over the weekend did not mean she would make the same decision next week.

The youth at risk of suicide was placed "at risk" and will be under increased surveillance.

The pair will be brought into the Youth Justice Court on Tuesday.

IT took about one second longer for a 16-year-old to escape from an Alice Springs prison than it takes Usain Bolt to run 100m.

CCTV footage, which has not been released publicly, shows it took Jason Patrick Reid just 10.5 seconds to escape from the Alice Springs Juvenile Detention Centre on June 5.

Youth Justice executive director Salli Cohen told the NT News CCTV footage showed Reid scaled an internal fence, sprinted across the roof of a building between the two fences, and then down the other side of the external fence without guards realising it.

The youth – who is facing extremely serious charges – then allegedly stole a Toyota Landcruiser before being picked up near Mataranka, about 1000km from Alice Springs two days later.

Ms Cohen said security procedures at the Alice Springs and Darwin centres were being reviewed.


While the security review was still underway, Ms Cohen said it was likely a third fence would be built at Don Dale.

She said no decision had been made yet on what additional security measures might be taken in Alice Springs.

The new fence at Darwin would likely be built around the B-block – the wing destroyed by a group of youths who then escaped on May 31.

Ms Cohen said corrections are considering two types of fences – an electric fence and a standard fence with a smooth anti-climb tube on top. The fence would be built inside the existing razor wire fencing.

The smooth non-climb fences already line the perimeter of the new prison at Holtze.

She said for the youths to willingly climb razor wire was an "extraordinary decision to make".

All inmates have been moved from freshly renovated B-block to the older and unrenovated C-block.

The Alice Springs escape was the second embarrassing security breach at an NT juvenile detention centre in the space of a week.

It followed the vandalism and breakout from Darwin's Don Dale Detention Centre, which saw five inmates cut through the roof of the facility as security personnel watched helplessly. Two of the five scaled two fences and escaped.

TWO 16-year-old escapees returned to the scene of the crime in spectacular fashion when they drove back into Don Dale Youth Detention Centre after breaking out less than 48 hours earlier.

Josiah Binsaris and Ethan Austral quite literally drove back into Don Dale, ploughing a stolen Toyota Yaris into roller doors at the front of the detention centre on Tuesday afternoon.



After crashing into the roller doors the pair ignored police demands to surrender for more than half an hour, continuing to drive around the detention centre before finally being arrested.


TRG, Metropolitan Patrol Group and dog squad units raced to Don Dale and the facility was put into lockdown after the two raced into the facility.

Binsaris and Austral were part of a group of six who allegedly caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage in B-Block of Don Dale on Sunday night as youth justice officers watched on powerlessly.

The young hoods forced youth justice officers back after allegedly arming themselves with makeshift weapons, disabling doors in the sector they were trashing.

After spending more than 20 minutes ransacking two accommodation units and the centre's education facility, five of the offenders forced their way on to the centre's roof.

Four of them then breached Don Dale's internal fence, with Binsaris and Austral making it over a second fence to freedom.





But for reasons no one can yet explain, the two escapees led police in a pursuit before turning into Tivendale Rd and heading back to Don Dale.

Crime Commander Mike Murphy said it was still too early to know what had motivated Binsaris and Austral to return to Don Dale.

"Obviously this event's just unfolded, the two youths have just been arrested, that information's not known to me at this time and it will become clearer during the court process when the information's disclosed," Commander Murphy said shortly after Binsaris and Austral were driven out of Don Dale in separate paddy wagons.

Police were alerted that the pair were out of hiding shortly before midday after a Toyota Yaris was reported to have driven off from a service station in Fannie Bay without paying for petrol.

The Yaris driven into Don Dale is believed to have been the third vehicle stolen by the two in their brief period of freedom.



After stealing a car shortly after breaking out of Don Dale just after 7.30pm on Sunday the pair visited Austral's mother Jodine Austral at her Woodroffe home about 9pm.

The first stolen car was later found dumped in Stuart Park.

Commander Murphy described yesterday's arrests as a good result.

"What we need to do now is get on with the police investigation. We need to collect all the necessary evidence," he said.

"And we need to put them before the courts to answer a number of charges including traffic offences, escaping lawful custody, criminal damage and find if they've been associated with anyone that's actually been supporting their efforts during the time when they escaped."

POLICE were forced to taser Ronald Kelly before arresting him in Driver. 
 
Kelly, 22, was arrested at a home in Widdup Cres, Driver, just after 7am Monday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said Strike Force Trident detectives searched eight homes across Palmerston on Monday morning.

"When members attended the home on (Monday) morning, they saw a person lying on the couch with a female trying to cover him up," Sen-Sgt Stringer said.

"One of the members recognised him as Ronald Kelly and we forced entry ... he failed to follow police instructions and a taser was deployed."


He was restrained and arrested and will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court Tuesday morning to face the outstanding warrants.

Bedding was found in the ceiling cavity of the home, but no guns were found.

Sen-Sgt Stringer said Kelly would be interviewed about alleged unlawful entries, stolen cars and pursuits. Police were still potential charges for those allegedly hiding him.

Kelly had been on the run from police since evading them in a six-hour siege in Palmerston last month.

POLICE have stepped up their presence in Palmerston amid concerns of revenge attacks over the shooting death of Fabian Brock. 
 
Some residents noticed extra police activity on Saturday night in areas where people close to those involved spend time, but officers found no serious trouble.

Police now believe people involved in a stabbing in Driver on Friday night, and a related car-ramming on Saturday, may be linked to the killing.

A 23-year-old man will appear in court today charged with aggravated assault, but no arrests have been made in relation to Mr Brock.


Police also confirmed they had information the shot that killed the 25-year-old father may not have been intended for him.

Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan said police were not aware of any specific revenge threats and the increased presence in Palmerston was precautionary.







   
"With an incident such as this in a close-knit community where people are well known to each other there is always a concern of retribution," Supt Morgan said.

"I'd encourage people if they are seeking retribution, don't take the law into your own hands. If you have information that's going to be of use to police, contact us and let us deal with it."

Mr Brock was driving on Union Tce in Wagaman with at least one passenger when he was shot at close range with a shotgun at about 2.30am on Saturday.

Supt Morgan said police believed another car was involved but he could not confirm if the blast came from inside Mr Brock's car or outside.

He said there were "a number" of people of interest and fugitive Ronald Kelly, who has been on the run since May 25 and is believed to be armed, was not one of them.
