A SENIOR police officer has described CCTV footage of an attack on two girls by a group of four other teenage girls as one of the worst she has ever seen. 
 
Superintendent Helen Braam said two 16-year-old girls were left bloodied and bruised after the attack – in which two of the attackers were aged just 13 – in the Todd Mall in Alice Springs about 5pm on Monday.

Four girls – two aged 13, one 15 and one 16 – spent Monday night in Alice Springs Watch House. They were charged on Tuesday morning.

"It was absolutely horrendous – it looks like a 'have you been talking about me' sort of thing," Supt Braam said.

"It's one of the worst attacks I've seen."

CCTV operators guided officers to the alleged attackers, leading to their arrests.

Supt Braam said the two alleged victims were sitting in the mall talking to a male friend when they were approached by the group of four.

"One of the victims knew one of the offenders, who had words with her," she said.

Supt Braam said the attacker threw punches and pulled the victim's hair before kneeing her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground.

Then it gets really ugly.

"The other three then join in, kicking, stomping and hitting her with a stick," she said. The male friend then tried to intervene, and "has copped a few trying to separate them".

"The other female is standing off to one side, and once the male companion has managed to protect the first victim, the attackers have left her and gone over to the other girl and laid into her."

The alleged attackers have been charged with assault and engaging in violent conduct.

Again.. this article has all the hallmarks of an abo crime! Do you think white kids would do a crime so bad the Alice Springs Cop head honcho would state that is one of the worst he ever saw?.... and children so young !

What hope have they got? You can bet any money abos were involved!

A FACEBOOK fight video page that started as a "joke" amongst mates has quickly amassed thousands of likes and proves that when it comes to a bit of biff between Territorians it's no laughing matter. 
 
The page N.T Fights features videos of throw downs from right across the NT including remote communities, school yards and even an ABC news report of bouncers behaving badly.

The creator of the page, who wished to remain anonymous, told the NT News they couldn't believe the page's success.



   

"I seriously didn't think people would get into this page so much, I think people just like watching people fight," the creator said.



"I started the page as a joke to have a laugh with a few mates and see how many likes it could get.

"There is no aim really just to see how it would go with the likes ... I just put them (the videos) up for my friends entertainment."

However, not everyone is a fan of the homegrown hitters with the NT Police Acting Commander James O'Brien warning the videos could lead to charges being laid.



"Police would ... like to advise that the videos posted may be evidence of criminal activity, such as physical assault, and may lead to involved parties facing criminal charges," he said.

Mr O'Brien said pages like this were not a new phenomenon.

"Police are concerned primarily that the postings on this site attempt to glorify violence," he said.

"This may lead impressionable young people to want to stage fights solely for the purposes of appearing in such videos which could potentially lead to tragic consequences, particularly if a person is adversely affected by alcohol and their judgment and reactions are significantly impaired.

"The dangers of physical fights cannot be underestimated. One punch can kill, as has been attested to by the tragic deaths interstate of people who were killed by a single coward's punch."

Four people, two males and two females, were arrested after a neighbourly argument escalated in Alice Springs on Wednesday night. 
 
The males, aged 28 and 23, were arrested for possession of an offensive weapons and the 23-year-old was also arrested for hindering police.

Both females, aged 50 and 32, were charged with assaulting police and hindering police.

Watch Commander Pauline Polychrone said police were called to the Hidden Valley Camp when public housing officers noticed the argument and saw the son of one of the men go to his car and get a tomahawk.

"Police arrived and he went back inside and the officers spoke to arguing men, one who sat down," she said.

"Two females approached the officers threatening and yelling.

"One attempted to punch a police woman as more police arrived following a backup call from the officers when they saw the weapon.

"The other female had a bottle and attempted to strike police but was restrained."

Six units were called to the dispute which took about 30 minutes to bring under control.

No one was injured although one of the original men in the argument was taken to hospital with chest pains.

THE NT Government is investigating installing cages in buses to protect drivers after a spate of violent incidents, including a driver who was threatened with a machete on Tuesday. 
 
But the announcement was overshadowed by Transport Minister Matt Conlan's comments that the Government could "only do so much" and Territorians should take "res­ponsibility for their actions".

(In other words they won't bother trying to stop abos properly and just let them run rampant? As if Abos know what responsibility is?!)


The union for the drivers says more must be done.

Transport Workers Union SA/NT branch organiser Elise McLay said workers felt "quite offended" by Mr Conlan's comments.

"I don't think putting signs on the side of the bus and telling Territorians they need to take responsibility for their own behaviour is going far enough to address this very ­serious issue," she said.



"We need to have more presence on the network of transit safety officers (TSOs)."

Mr Conlan made the comments at the launch of a public transport safety campaign at Darwin Bus Interchange yesterday.

He said the Transit Safety: Keeping You Safe campaign aimed to "promote better behaviour on public transport and raise awareness of new safety initiatives".

Mr Conlan said security cages to protect drivers were being investigated.

"My department is in discussion with both operators about installing these cages."

He said 18 of the 25 recommendations made in the bus safety audit in September had been implemented.

But Ms McLay said a key recommendation, the installation of duress buttons linked to GPS systems, which would pinpoint the location of a bus after an incident has occurred, had not been implemented.

Ms McLay said a system whereby TSOs would travel on buses was an "option that needs to be considered".



The calls come after a bus driver, 67, was threatened with a machete on the Stuart Hwy, after trying to remove a group of five people from his bus.

A passenger said a man made threats about "cutting someone up" before the driver pulled over to ­remove him.

The man then walked down the bus aisle, before producing the machete and bashing it on the Plexiglas window.

The man and his four companions then fled into bushland. He has been charged with being armed in public and disorderly behaviour and will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on February 24.

THE violent slaying of Yuendumu pool manager Rick Berry is alleged to have been a targeted attack by a teenage colleague. 
 
Police say people are now fleeing the Central Australian town fearful the events could spark a new wave of violence.

Locals in the Central Australian town are also shocked and saddened by the killing of a man described as a "cheerful" and happy person.

Police said people were now fleeing town – headed for nearby Lajamanu and Alice Springs – fearful the events could spark a repeat of violence that engulfed Yuendumu in 2012.

Mr Berry, 45, was found dead in his home about 3pm on Thursday after the discovery of his burnt-out car near Tilmouth Well about 350km northwest of Yuendemu.

Alice Springs police arrested two youths aged 16 and 17 in relation to the attack. Neither had been charged by last night.

A number of locals have fled Yuendumu, 300km west of Alice Springs, following the slaying apparently fearing a renewed flare-up of the violence which has plagued the community over recent years. But police believe Mr Berry's death is unlikely to see a recurrence.

"We are not seeing, hearing or smelling any indication of violence," Detective Acting-Senior Sergeant Tony Henrys said.

Both youths worked for the Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC), with the younger one working with Mr Berry at the pool.

A/Sen-Sgt Henrys said there was evidence of a "violent assault" in the home.

He said the two boys "were not walking around looking for someone to assault" when they believe the attack occurred. He said if Mr Berry was not at the home, police were confident they "would not have committed another offence".

Last night Mr Berry's body remained in the home in-situ, with a forensics expert en-route from Darwin to analyse the scene, including blood splatter.

The pair were arrested without incident after the 16-year-old attended Alice Springs police station. A/Sen-Sgt Henrys said he was not handing himself in, nor did he admit to the crime.

His partner was arrested in Larapinta a short time later.

He said police had no motive for the killings, and would not comment on why the boy attended the station.

He said there was no evidence to suggest an inappropriate relationship between Mr Berry and the boy.

Yuendumu Store Indervon staffer Amy Gambirazzi said news of Mr Berry's death is "incredibly sad and very shocking."

Her manager Matthew Helyard said he was loved by kids in the community.

"He was the mans in charge of the pool and that's where most of the kids would be at after school and on weekends," he said..

"It is a big shock. He was a cheerful person, happy."
