A MAN allegedly pushed his girlfriend in front of a moving car, continued to attack her after she was run over and tried to kick a witness. 
 
Alice Springs police have called for witnesses to the brutal assault on Undoolya Rd, near Sturt Tce, about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

A man, 22, allegedly pushed his partner, 26, onto the road during an argument.

Detective Senior Constable Robert Kent said: "The vehicle slowed to avoid the woman but she was struck and fell to the ground. The driver of the vehicle­ stopped to check on the victim."

The man allegedly tried to kick the woman and a witness who tried to help her.

Sen-Constable Kent said the driver left the area a short time later.

"We would like to speak to them and anyone else that may have witnessed this assault­," Sen-Constable Kent said.

St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said the victim "complained of sore legs". She was taken to hospital for observation.

A TEENAGER has been locked up after he allegedly got a 13-year-old girl pregnant. 
 
The man, 18, who can't be named for legal reasons, is one of two alleged offenders charged with having sex with an underage girl in separate cases at Wurrumiyanga, on Bathurst Island, this month.

In a bail hearing, a sex crimes detective told Darwin Magistrates Court that the man — who allegedly maintained a relationship with the child — was living with his new girlfriend before he was nicked.

The alleged victim is at hospital in Darwin waiting to give birth with the baby due next month.

Defence lawyer Anna Tucker said the girl consented to the sexual "encounter" with her client.

But prosecutor Erin McAuley said: "No matter how (the defence) tries to sugar coat it, this was not consensual.

"She's a 13-year-old girl."

The court heard there would be a paternity test after the baby was born. A forensic swab has been taken from the man.

Ms Tucker said her client should be released from custody and allowed to live with his grandmother, a respected Tiwi elder, while on bail.

Magistrate Greg Smith said he was uncertain the man had the "sense not to contact the young lady".

The bail hearing will continue this week.

Another man, 20, also from Wurrumiyanga, was charged with maintaining a relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

The girl named "numerous people" who had sex with her in a child forensic interview.

Ms Tucker, for the accused, raised concerns "there was a reasonable mistake about (the victim's) age".

Mr Smith said there was a risk the man would be remanded longer than he would in prison if found guilty of the offence.

DARWIN bus drivers face abuse almost daily, but Stan Lonsdale was lucky to escape without severe physical injuries when he was attacked after telling a paranoid and drunk passenger to get off. 
 
Mr Lonsdale, 67, was punched in the face by ­Kymalis Murrungun, who was jailed for 11 months – suspended after seven months with an order that he complete residential rehab – at Darwin Magistrates Court.

The bus driver said the assault was his first in seven years on the job.

"I'd had death threats, abuse and fighting on the bus but this was the first time I've been hit," he said. "You don't know what's out there. I'm still a bit apprehensive."

Murrungun also put a police officer in jeopardy when he was arrested.

An uncapped needle twice pricked the cop's finger while he was removing a wine bladder from the offender's hip pocket. Murrungun knew the syringe was there but claimed the pants weren't his. 

The court heard that Mr Lonsdale had given the offender a chance to stop abusing other passengers in front of schoolchildren.

He continued to swear loudly and punched the driver in the arm.

Mr Lonsdale pulled up at the next stop and followed him towards the bus exit, when Murrungun punched him in the face.

He was knocked down, bleeding from his nose and mouth, and was treated for head and back injuries at Royal Darwin Hospital.

"It has changed the way I deal with things – I'm not getting out of my seat for anyone," Mr Lonsdale said.

His wife Dee said he wasn't the only bus driver who had been assaulted. "We've seen the court case from start to finish and hope it has a healing effect," she said, adding she hoped it would give other victims hope to see justice done.

"A friend of ours was assaulted by a 14-year-old boy while she was driving in January and he's still on the street.

"She's too frightened to go back to work."

Mr Lonsdale said that tighter security at Casuarina and other bus interchanges as a result of a NT Government bus safety audit had "quietened things down".

In sentencing Murrungun, Magistrate Elisabeth Armitage said society condemned assaults on workers.

"But you're not going to spend the rest of your life in prison," she said.

The Bus in Darwin should be called "boong trolley". They just can't act civil any place they go and now the drvers are frightened to even leave their seat due to the boong's unpredictable , emotional nature.

More attacks on paramedics causing job exodus
Calls for better training to deal with violence and aggression


BLOOD spat in their mouths, rocks thrown at their heads, punched, kicked and verbally abused – it's all in a day's work for Territory paramedics. According to paramedics on the ground, the number of such incidents is increasing and almost every paramedic has, or will be, assaulted during the course of their work. Under their employment with St John, NT paramedics are unable to talk to the media so have shared the stories of their shocking experiences with the NT News on the basis of anonymity.

A female paramedic from Darwin shared the following sickening story. "One night we went to an intoxicated female patient who had been king hit," she said. "When attempting to treat her, she purposely spat blood in our faces. "We both copped her blood in our mouths." A male Darwin paramedic described the impact of being physically assaulted.

"I was physically assaulted by a patient,'' he said. "As a result, I lost my memory, my balance and my ability to work for 18 months." Another male paramedic in Darwin said: "I have been assaulted a number of times.

Once a person tried to choke me in the back of the ambulance on the way to RDH. "I managed to pry his hands off before he closed them on my throat." An Alice Springs paramedic told of the time she thought she was being shot at.

"We were driving a Code 1 (beacons, sirens, exceeding the speed limit where safe) down the Ross Highway at night time. Next minute, a rock came flying through the driver's side window, just missing my head. I honestly thought someone had shot a gun at the car," she said.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the organisation had a zero-tolerance policy on violence and aggression towards its paramedics. "It just shows a lack of respect and it's totally unacceptable," he said.

Mr Garraway said St John Ambulance offered various forms of training and other measures in an attempt to keep paramedics safe.

These included situational awareness training, tailored cultural awareness and community protocol training. SJA encourages all staff to report any incident of aggression or bullying to police and encourages them to press charges. Ambulances are equipped with a personal duress system and paramedics also carry one on them.

But a paramedic and union representative told the NT News more could be done because there was no specific training for dealing with violence and aggression.

"The techniques that are used by paramedics and the knowledge gained comes from your peers on the road." Every year, the Territory loses 20 to 30 per cent of its paramedics, and the union delegate said the constant barrage of physical and verbal assaults was a contributor to the staff leaving.

Wicked Campers creator John Webb said crime in Darwin is worse than it is in South Africa's largest city Johannesburg, after a ram-raid on the company's inner-city headquarters. 
 
Young thieves stole two ­vehicles from Wicked ­Campers on McMinn St, crashing them through the padlocked front gates as they made their getaway.

Mr Webb said as of this week he will have guard dogs patrolling his facility.

Thieves have hit his business twice in the past month.

"I will have dogs that bark and bare their teeth," he said.

"If we get dogs we shouldn't have anymore trouble."
The latest theft followed a recent break-in during which thieves stole keys from vehicles in the yard.

"Over the years I have had half a dozen thefts," Mr Webb said.

"There was even a police chase (involving a stolen Wicked vehicle) a few years ago."

Mr Webb said his business in Johannesburg has not had anywhere near the same problems with car thieves as his Darwin operation.

"This is worse than Johannesburg," he said.

"I know that's pretty wild."

Staff, who sleep on the ­Darwin premises, were away between 9pm and midnight on Friday, when the cars were ­stolen.

A MAN was allegedly punched in the head repeatedly and swung into a metal pole in a "sickening attack" on Knuckey Street overnight on Saturday. 
 
Northern Territory Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said man, 35, had been arrested for the alleged assault.

"The 50 year old male victim was at the Knuckey St entrance to the Mall with a group of associates when he was punched five to six times to the head and swung into a metal advertising sign," Duty Supt Jorgensen said.

"One punch can kill let alone several to the head and being swung into a pole," she said.

Duty Supt Jorgensen said it appeared the attack was unprovoked.

"Often there is no reason (for assaults to take place)," she said.

Duty Supt Jorgensen said police were in the process of viewing CCTV footage and talking to witnesses.

"We are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and contact police," she said.

A Royal Darwin Hospital spokeswoman said the victim was in a serious but stable condition.

Supt Jorgensen said the "senseless violence regrettably continues".

The latest assault follows an alleged incident in Wulagi which saw a man, 28, sustain head and facial injuries after he was attacked by a another man, 30 earlier this week.

The victim was transported to RDH and is reportedly "recovering well".

The alleged attacker was charged with aggravated assault and will appear in court on January 9.

A NIMBLE young boy has sparked a police chase and is still on the loose after stealing and dumping a car before fleeing on foot in Bellamack this morning. 
 
Northern Territory Police Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the alleged offender appeared to be about 13 years old.

Sup Jorgensen said the teen had stolen a car then dumped it at the "entrance to Bellamack" around 10am on Sunday.

A lengthy foot pursuit ensued with the boy jumping fences and eventually outrunning police.

"Police have located the stolen car and we're looking for (the boy) in Palmerston," Duty Supt Joregensen said.

"(He lead officers on) a foot pursuit and went down an alleyway between Temple Tce and Rilston Ave."

"He was jumping fences and went towards the Chung Wah intersection towards Moulden."

The boy hasn't been sighted since.

Sup Joregensen said the boy of Aboriginal appearance was wearing blue shorts and a grey shirt.

"He was seen going into the new housing estate in Bellamack and took his shirt off," Duty Supt Jorgensen said.
