Photos have emerged of a nine-month-old baby moments before and after a stranger poured boiling coffee over him and caused burns to 60 per cent of his body - leaving his mother traumatised.

The young bub was at a picnic with his mum and friends at Hanlon Park in Coorparoo in Brisbane's south when an unknown man approached the group at about midday on Tuesday.

He poured a thermos of coffee over the baby before fleeing the scene. He remains on the run on Wednesday night.

A photo taken shortly before the incident shows the baby sitting on a rug happily playing with a toy truck.

Heartbreaking footage has also emerged of the baby in hospital afterwards, wrapped in bandages and screaming in pain.

The baby was then rushed to the Queensland Children's Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

The nine-month-old suffered serious but non-life-threatening burns to 60 per cent of his body, including his face, upper body and arms.

Confronting footage has  emerged of the baby in hospital afterwards, wrapped in bandages and screaming in pain.

The baby's mother became emotional as she relived the harrowing ordeal.

'It's torture and I'm supposed to be his protector and I couldn't protect him,' she said.

'I'm just having flashbacks all the time about what happened and I wish that he had poured the coffee over me.

'I don't know who would think it is okay to harm a little, innocent baby.'

'It is callous and cowardly,' Detective Inspector Paul Dalton told reporters on Wednesday.

'Going to a park on a beautiful winter's day in Brisbane, enjoying your time ... to be attacked like this and approached like this, it must be terrifying.

'In 35 years of being a police officer I've never come across a job where a child this young in these circumstances has been attacked.'

Inspector Dalton also reassured Brisbane parents his officers are 'working around the clock' to find PROTECT the perpetrator.

Thurairajasingam's charges include assaulting an emergency worker on duty, intentionally causing serious injury, common law assault and making a false report to police.

Police allege the teen made a false report about being assaulted during an aggravated burglary.

The court heard that officers attended the scene, 'believing they were approaching someone who needed their help.

Radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands has slammed Queensland Police for refusing to disclose the race of a man accused of throwing boiling coffee over a nine-month-old baby after it was confirmed the attacker had successfully fled the country

Queensland Police did not initially provide the man's race, saying only the suspect had "tan skin", was in his 30s or 40s and of a proportionate build.

Despite a manhunt being sparked, police confirmed on Monday the suspect had successfully fled the country on his own passport.

Victoria Police say they are appalled at the behaviour of protesters who lobbed missiles and acid at officers in violent scenes in the Melbourne CBD.

Loud bangs rang out across the CBD on Wednesday as police pelted antiwar marchers with tear gas and pepper spray in clashes that began outside the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and spread to elsewhere in the city

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patten said later on Wednesday the thousands protesting the Land Forces defence exhibition were far from peaceful.

"The police officers on the ground were subjected to a whole range of vitriol to abuse; they were assaulted, they were pushed, they were shoved, they had bottles thrown at them," he said.

"They had balloons thrown at them that had different liquids in them. We've had analysis that shows some type of low-level acid that caused irritants to the police was used."

Patten said some officers had complained of faeces being thrown at them. That was still being confirmed, although horse dung was lobbed.

"This is the type of disgusting behaviour that we saw today from a group who were intent on confronting us at this stage," he said.

"Fortunately, we don't believe any of our officers have significant injuries – although it's not insignificant when you've been pelted in the eye and you're treated for something in the eye, you've been hit in the head."

He said there had been 39 arrests for charges including assaulting, hindering and obstructing police, general assault, arson and blocking roads.

Police are investigating a break-in at Eyre, where a teenage boy was assaulted.

About 2.30am today (Thursday, 26 September), police were called to a house in Edward John Parade after reports that three people had forced their way into the property and assaulted a 16-year-old boy.

Two of the suspects were armed with machetes.

An 18-year-old man from the house ran out and was chased by the suspects, who may have left the area in a black sedan.

The injured boy was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Police suspect the incident was not random and ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,
