A man is fighting for life after being assaulted by a gang in the heart of Melbourne this morning.

Police believe the 27-year-old victim was a passenger inside a Toyota Camry, which was travelling north along King Street, West Melbourne, when it was overtaken by a red Subaru about 4.30am

The passenger was then ambushed by a group of men, who dragged him from the Camry and struck him in the head with a pole, Acting Detective Sergeant Simon Watts told reporters during a press conference this morning.

"It was quite brutal, and quite confronting," Act. Det. Sgt. Watts said.

The offenders, who are all described as being African in appearance, then fled the scene

The victim was left with serious injuries, and remains at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

Investigators believe his attackers may have been travelling in a red Subaru and a red Mitsubishi.

'It certainly is a serious crime, so we'd really like to appeal for witnesses," Act. Det. Sgt. Watts said

Victoria has cancelled the visas of 20 gang members over the past three years in a crackdown on youth violence.

Nineteen more visas are 'under active cancellation consideration', The Australian reported.

Those who have had their visas cancelled include people with convictions for drug trafficking, assaults or armed robberies

Others had convictions for kidnapping, police assault, weapons offences and sexual assault.

Within the group of 39 visas were people of Sudanese, New Zealander *coconuts with NZ passports.or Samoan descent - others were deemed 'stateless'.

Last September it was revealed Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton had ordered monthly reports of 'non-­citizens linked to Victorian youth gangs'.

The reports came amid strong criticism of State Government and its youth gang crisis, and have since been spruiked as an effective way of protecting the community


In total, 81 people have been referred to the Department of Home Affairs since April 2016.

According to the reports, the department is also 'reviewing cancellation processes in relation to minors, in discussion with legal division and child wellbeing branch.'

The report also notes that 42 people whose visas are no longer 'under active cancellation consideration' have been flagged on the internal systems.

'Should any of the individuals apply for another visa or citizenship, the processing area is ­advised to seek penal checks and contact the 'character and cancellation branch' prior to any grant/approval,' the department said

SA Police have released a computer-generated image of two men allegedly involved in the theft of a car at knifepoint in Torrensville last month.

On Saturday, March 23, just after 10.30pm, a man was sitting in his car on Shipster St waiting to start his cleaning job when five men walked past his car.

Police say the men then turned back and surrounded the man's car, threatening him with a metal police and knife before ordering him out of the vehicle and demanding money

The mother of the ten-year-old girl who police believe was sexually assaulted in a public toilet says her daughter was bound and gagged during the brazen attack.

The young girl said she was attacked in the public toilets at the Blair Athol Sport Community Club, 15km south of Adelaide's CBD, between 5pm and 5.30pm on April 3.

A manhunt is underway for an Afghani man, aged between 30 and 50, who is believed to have attacked the young girl.

The mother of the victim, who cannot be identified, told The Advertiser her daughter's mouth and eyes were covered with tape and her hands were tied behind her head.

'She's very scared, she said a man took her in the toilet,' the mother said.

The young girl said she told the man her mother was outside, to which he said he 'didn't care'.

The attacker was in the company of two girls aged between three and five, near the playground who called the man 'Dad'

The girl's mother said her daughter was forced onto the ground before the man told her to wash her hands.

The victim managed to elbow her attacker before running from the toilet, hopping on her bike and fleeing.

'I'm very stressed, very scared and I am very sad. I want him found,' the mother said.

Special Crime Detectives released an audio recording in Hazaragi/Dari language, as well as a computer generated image of the alleged attacker, to appeal directly to the Afghani community to help hunt down the predator

A teenage girl had her throat slashed and a good Samaritan brutally bashed during a wild brawl between youths in Melbourne.

A small axe and a knife were also used in the fight which broke out on the RMIT University basketball court about 7.30pm Wednesday before spilling into a nearby street.

An unnamed witness who saw the fight between the two groups of youths said it erupted over a girl.

'Apparently it was over a girl... One guy fighting another and then weapons got involved... they tried to stab each other,' the man told 9News.

But by the time police arrived at the scene of fight the criminals had fled, escaping through the university campus
