The Welcome to Country at Melbourne's Anzac Day Dawn Service has been booed by a group of protesters


Hushed whispers earlier filled the air as masses of people turned out under the cloak of pre-dawn darkness in Melbourne on Friday to commemorate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

But the peace was broken during Bunurong elder Mark Brown's Welcome to Country, when heckles and boos came from a group of around six to ten people near the front of the crowd

Their voices were picked up by microphones and loudspeakers, making the disturbance clearly audible to the rest of the crowd.

'It's our country,' one yelled.

'We don't have to be welcomed,' screamed another.

The boos lasted the entire five minutes of the Welcome to Country.

After the Welcome to Country, Victorian Governor Margaret Gardner delivered the official Anzac Day address, which acknowledged Aboriginal Australians
'How many more? This is shit,' one man shouted.

A woman then shouted 'always was, always will be'  - before the crowd erupted with applause.

Jacob Hersant, a prominent neo-Nazi figure, was among those loudly booing.

'This is a day for the Anzacs, it's not for Aboriginals,' he told media after the service.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan unleashed about the act of disrespect.

'[It] runs counter to why we gather at the Shrine at dawn [with] hundreds of thousands people across the country simultaneously,' she said on ABC radio shortly afterwards.

'They gather to never forget what war is like and why it is so important so we can gather peacefully today because of that sacrifice.'

Ms Allan said education about Gallipoli, the ANZAC tradition, and wartime history was essential in countering displays of disrespect.

As we were taking our places this morning... [the MC Justin Smith] was reading out letters that young men had written to their mums from war zones,' Ms Allan said.

'That is what is being dishonoured. That is why we cannot give up educating, helping people understand why not only is that behaviour disrespectful, it doesn't change anything. It doesn't change the past.'

A Welcome to Country is a traditional ceremony performed by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander elders to formally welcome visitors to their land and to give their blessing for events taking place on their traditional lands

While the small ceremonies are intended to be friendly and inclusive, it has proved divisive, with some claiming it is a token gesture and a symbol of woke culture.

Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price previously said Australia was 'saturated' with it, which was 'removing the sacredness of certain traditional culture and practices'.

'It's just become almost like a throwaway line. We don't want to see all these symbolic gestures. We want to see real action,' she said.

The incident has been quickly condemned by RSL Victoria, which said the heckling was completely out of keeping with the intention of the solemn event.

Excerpt: The air of reverence for the Anzacs was broken during Bunurong elder Mark Brown's Welcome to Country, when loud heckles and boos threatened to drown him out ... and Peter Dutton branding them 'mentally unwell'.

Herasant, the first person to be charged and convicted for publicly making a Nazi salute in Victoria, was later filmed having a heated exchange with the same reporter.

'Why can they politicise it and make it about white guilt...over and over again. This is about the Anzacs,' Hersant told the reporter.

Santomartino, the Channel Nine reporter, kept grilling him, asking why he felt he had the right to boo when it was about 'all Australians'.

A small crowd that had gathered to witness the exchange while the service was still running started to boo and jeer Hersant. 

He was spoken to by police and escorted from the service.

It is understood he did not perform a Nazi salute, despite some reports attempts to frame him with a bogus charge for a bogus crime.

Defence Minister Richard Marles described the booing as 'outrageous and appalling', and branded those responsible as 'just idiots'.

'It should be condemned in the strongest possible terms,' Mr Marles told Sky News.

The radio star, 53, has previously said the indigenous ceremony, in which a host typically acknowledges the traditional owners of the land and pays respect to Elders past and present, has been devalued by its 'overuse'.

The shock jock has backed his beliefs in a heated moment on his KIIS FM show, saying critics of the Welcome to Country should be questioning the 'huge domestic violence problem in Aboriginal communities' instead.

'This is what p***es me off about this election and this whole country. We all think things and no one ever says anything,' he began as he referenced a Daily Mail Australia poll.

Asked if there should be a Welcome to Country at the Anzac Day service on Friday, 90 per cent of almost 8,000 respondents to the poll answered 'No'.

'Why isn't anyone going to ask the Prime Minister [Anthony Albanese] what he's going to do about the huge domestic violence problem in Aboriginal communities?' Sandilands added.

He continued: 'That's their problem. I speak to Aborigines. I've got family that are living in those communities. That's their big issue.'

Newsreader Brooklyn Ross asked: 'So what are you saying? Worrying about Welcome to Country is not important? Is that what you mean?'

'You don't have to roll this thing out and dull the vibe of a proper Welcome to Country,' Sandilands clarified.

'Some people are having Welcome to Country at the beginning of Zoom meetings. I don't mind it at a sporting event or somewhere where it's a reflection of the nation.

'I just think it should be something big and should be done as a beautiful experience for people to enjoy. I know there were some people booing at the Anzac parade. All I read about that was "neo-Nazis" were doing it.'

A group of apparent neo-Nazis who booed a Welcome to Country during an Anzac Day dawn service in Melbourne sparked a fierce criticism from Australians over the weekend.

It's our country!' one yelled, while another screamed: 'We don't have to be welcomed.'

The boos and shouts lasted the entire three minutes of the address.

The incident has attracted condemnation from across the political spectrum and sparked debate about Welcome to Country ceremonies in Australia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton were asked to weigh in on the appropriateness of Welcome to Country ceremonies during the final leader's debate on Sunday night.

During the debate, which was hosted by Channel Seven political editor Mark Riley, Mr Dutton was asked about the ugly scenes at Anzac Day.

Anzac Day, that is our most sacred day of the year, and it is a time to respect diggers. It's not a time for booing any part of that ceremony,' Mr Dutton said.

Riley also questioned the Opposition Leader on whether he would include Welcome to Country ceremonies at official events if he won the Federal Election on May 3.

Mr Dutton claimed he wanted to 'unite our country' under one flag, the Australian flag, in contrast to the Prime Minister who stands in front of three flags.

'People have said to me as we had moved across the country, that there is a sense across the community that it is overdone,' he added.

'For the opening of Parliament, fair enough, it is respectful to do. But for the start of every meeting at work, or the start of a football game, I think a lot of Australians think it is overdone.

'It cheapens the significance of what it was meant to do, it divides the country, not dissimilar to what the Prime Minister did with the Voice.'

Mr Albanese was asked directly if he thought Welcome to Countries were 'overdone'.
