Police will be on high alert for racially fuelled tensions that could escalate into dangerous brawls on Australia Day and have warned they will be taking a "zero tolerance" approach to violence. Deputy Victoria Police Commissioner Andrew Crisp said hundreds of extra officers, including specialist police forces, will be patrolling Melbourne's CBD, St Kilda beach foreshore, and across the state.

South Australia

POLICE are warning attendees to the country's largest Australia Day parade along King William St today that they are prepared for protesters.

The parade begins at 6pm and will converge on Elder Park where up to 40,000 people are expected to watch the fireworks.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Paul Dickson, said it "was hard to know" if there would be any trouble, but after analysing the events of last year they had established a plan to deal with any protest activity.

"Our main concern is possible protest activity," he said.

"From a policing perspective it is very difficult to communicate with the leaders, the people that actually manage these protests. {Yeah, they banged on my door to pester me about it ~ Cailen.}

"We have tried and we have not been successful."

Mr Dickson reiterated that South Australians have a right to protest peacefully but that any violence, harassment or vandalism would not be tolerated.
