John A. Logan College releases statement denouncing hate speech found on flyers last week

Right: Hate group shows its face through flyers on John A. Logan College campus
CARTERVILLE — Brad Cullum was shocked Tuesday morning when he got to his car at John A. Logan College.

CARTERVILLE — More than a week after declining to denounce hate speech disseminated through flyers on campus, John A. Logan College has released a statement denouncing hate speech.

Someone put about 50 to 75 flyers from the neo-Nazi group Church of Creativity on cars last week, and posts flooded social media about the incident. The flyers were removed promptly and the school released a statement the next day explaining its policy against flyering cars on campus.

"John A. Logan College prohibits the dissemination of flyers of any kind on automobile windshields," part of a statement from the college said. John A. Logan College Board Chair Bill Kilquist said then that the school did not tolerate discrimination of any kind.

On Friday, Steve O'Keefe, who works for JALC's college relations department, sent out a joint statement from school administrators denouncing the message on last week's flyers.

It's Not Alright to be White at John A Logan College

"John A. Logan College is deeply disturbed by the recent appearance on our campus of white supremacist flyers from the Church of Creativity and feel compelled to speak out and condemn the message of intolerance the group promotes. History makes clear that ignoring such hate speech will not make it go away and that it must be confronted directly," the statement reads.
Get it Now: IT'S ALRIGHT TO BE WHITE!

The statement is signed by Kilquist; JALC President Ron House; Robert McKenzie, president of the Faculty Association; Tracie Zoller, president of Logan Operational Staff Association; Stephen Constantine, president of the Association of Term Faculty; and Jason Mueller, Teamsters Shop Steward.

The statement goes on to say that the speech espoused by the CoC and other like-minded groups is "antithetical to the environment of inclusion the college seeks to promote."

It also says that democracy depends on some level of tolerance of multiple points of view, but that does not mean "we have to allow them to stand unchallenged."

"In the current national and international political context, a variety of forces have emboldened racists, xenophobes, homophobes, and other advocates of hate. We believe we must speak out against such voices of intolerance wherever we encounter them, beginning in our own college community," the statement says.

"It's all right to be multicultural. In fact, it's what has made America great."

Outcry over the CoC flyers last week came at the same time students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and those in the surrounding community called for the ouster of a student who it was alleged had ties to neo-Nazism. Flyers circulated online and on SIU's campus with the student's name and photograph, and provided what it alleged was his username on a racist message board.

According to a report in The Southern, the student on those posters is no longer at the school.

O'Keefe said that whoever put the flyers on the John A. Logan campus remains under investigation.

Racist propaganda placed on windshields at John A. Logan Community College

By Kallie Cox and Farrah Blaydes

The Daily Egyptian - Southern Illinois University Student Newspaper

20 September 2018

https://dailyegyptian.com/86596/news/racist-propaganda-placed-on-windshields-at-john-a-logan-community-college

On Tuesday, fliers with the heading "It's alright to be white" were placed on the windshields of vehicles at John A. Logan Community College.

The flier said white Americans are "nature's finest" and should be proud of their culture and inheritance. The flier also said white Americans should not be ashamed of the "imagined sins of their forefathers."

The flier is recruitment propaganda for a white supremacist group known as the Church of Creativity, and has a website address to the Creativity Alliance at the bottom of the poster.

In response to the fliers Steve O'Keefe, the director of college relations for John A. Logan, released a statement in regards to the recruitment propaganda that showed up on campus Tuesday morning on students car windshields.

"John A. Logan College prohibits the dissemination of fliers of any kind on automobile windshields," O'Keefe said. "Fliers that were placed on a limited number of cars on Tuesday, Sept. 18 were promptly removed by campus police. The fliers from an outside group have no connection to the College."

The Daily Egyptian asked the Church of Creativity if the fliers were theirs and if they ordered someone to place the fliers.

"Why would the person who put the flier out need to be taking orders?" The Church of Creativity said. "Perhaps the person did it because he (or she) wanted to? It is good to see somebody at least trying to spread pro-white thinking. Have any laws been broken?"

Numerous social media accounts identified the person that placed the fliers as an SIU student, however the Daily Egyptian has not been able to confirm that.

In response to the accusations on Twitter, Lori Stettler, vice chancellor for student affairs, released a statement saying all students share the right to free speech, even speech that expresses views most would condemn.

"All students share the right to free speech, even speech with which we strongly disagree," Stettler said.

While some on social media called on SIU to revoke the student's financial aid, Stettler said the university would not do so.

"As a public institution, we cannot and do not ask about political or social views when admitting students or awarding any type of financial aid. Doing so could lead to perceptions of bias and illegal discrimination," Stettler said.

Stettler said the university encourages all students to comply with the Saluki Creed:

"As a Saluki, I pledge to forward these ideas and ideals: I discourage bigotry and celebrate diversity by striving to learn from differences in people's ideas and opinions. I will embrace the ideals of freedom of civilized expressions, intellectual inquiry and respect for others."

In response to the fliers the Carbondale Racial Justice Coalition released the following statement:

"The Racial Justice Coalition wants everyone to know that the days of ignoring hate groups like the neo-Nazi Creativity movement, in order to deprive them of the attention they crave, are over."

The Church of Creativity, or the Creativity Movement, have been around for decades. One of its leaders, Matthew Hale, graduated from the SIU School of Law, before being refused a law license by the State of Illinois due to his poor character.

In 2005, Hale went to federal prison for encouraging an undercover FBI informant to murder a federal judge.

After the fliers were placed at John A. Logan appeared, new fliers from a group known as the Knights of the Flaming Circle, an anti-fascist group, were found around Carbondale and circulated on social media.

The Knights of the Flaming Circle released a poster containing photos of the accused student and provides contact information for the group, encouraging anyone who has information on the student to contact them.

"We plan on using that information to obstruct [the student's] ability to engage in white supremacist organizing," Knights of the Flaming Circle said.

John A. Logan College Reacts to White Supremacist Flyers on Campus

John A. Logan College is keeping its distance from flyers promoting white supremacy, which were placed on vehicles parked at the school on Tuesday.

The flyers had a bold typed headline that read "It's Alright to be White."
Logan spokesperson Steve O'Keefe.

"John A. Logan College prohibits the dissemination of flyers of any kind on automobile windshields. Flyers that were placed on a limited number of cars on Tuesday, September 18th, were promptly removed by campus police. The flyers from an outside group have no connection to the college."

The flyer is from the Creativity Movement, whose website states what is good for the White Race is the highest virtue and what is bad for the White Race is the ultimate sin.

The current Creativity Movement started under Matthew Hale. The SIU Law School graduate is serving a 40-year sentence in Colorado for asking an informant to kill Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow, who ruled against him in a trademark case.

A professor who discovered the flyers says he'd like to see the school be more inclusive.

Logan history professor David Cochran says he thinks the school should make a stronger commitment to its minority students.

"Our faculty is overwhelmingly white. Our staff is also overwhelmingly white. There hasn't been a kind of commitment to recruit either faculty or staff or students for that matter of color."

Cochran says he like to see John A. Logan hire more minorities and create more minority scholarships.
