An explosion at a mysterious US monument dubbed the "American Stonehenge" has reignited conspiracy theorists online.

Excerpt: Officials in the US have released CCTV footage showing an explosion that destroyed a set of mysterious "Guidestones" in Georgia on the morning of July 6.

The Georgia Guidestones were erected in 1980 and comprised several granite monoliths with a "10-part message espousing the conservation of mankind and future generations in 12 languages," according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

They were five massive slabs of polished granite rise out of the earth in a pattern resembling a star. The rocks are 5m tall, weighing more than 20,000kg apiece.

The Georgia Guidestones have been the subject of several conspiracy theories, and have most recently been targeted by fringe Georgia candidate Kandiss Taylor, who alleges the monument is tied to a "Luciferian Cabal."

Others believe the monument, erected in the 1980s, has a link to a population control conspiracy to reduce the planet to just 500,000 people.

On Wednesday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released surveillance footage it believes was taken around 4am that captures a large explosion at the site of the Georgia Guidestones.

Officials also provided the public with separate CCTV video that showed a vehicle in the area. The agency confirmed that for safety reasons, the Guidestones were "completely demolished."

Investigators said the initial damage was attributed to "unknown individuals" who "detonated an explosive device" at the site.
