THE WORST NOVEMBER AT THE BORDER IN DHS HISTORY

TOMMY - PIGOTT
DEC 16, 2021

Last month, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reportedly apprehended more than 173,000 illegal immigrants crossing the southern border, making this the worst November at the border in DHS history. This more than doubled the previous record for November, which came in FY 2000 when there were 76,196 apprehensions.

To put Biden’s border crisis in context, 173,000 apprehensions is:

* A 140% increase over last November

* A 221% increase from the average number of November apprehensions during the Trump administration

* A 5% increase over the previous month, which was the worst October in DHS history

With these latest numbers, more illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border in the last three months than in all of FY 2020, President Trump’s last full fiscal year in office.

And that doesn’t even include “gotaways” – illegal immigrants that have escaped into the U.S. unpursued. According to Border Patrol’s official “gotaways” count, 273,112 illegal immigrants escaped CBP between January 20 and August 31. Border Patrol agents estimate an additional 100,000 illegal immigrants have escaped in just the last two months and expect more than 600,000 illegal immigrants will escape into the U.S. this fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Biden and Harris are nowhere to be found. There is no record Biden has EVER been to the border, let alone as president. Border Czar Harris hasn’t visited the border in almost 6 months and has only spoken to the President of Guatemala once, also months ago.

Biden’s border crisis is as bad as ever. But as drug smuggling surges, cartels and crime run rampant, and communities are under siege, Biden and Harris are completely MIA.

Several migrant stash houses uncovered in one week in El Paso Sector

www.borderreport.com

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — Federal, state and local authorities have encountered several migrant stash houses this month in the El Paso area, including a pair of apartments holding 30 people, the U.S. Border Patrol announced Tuesday.

On Sunday, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers stopped a vehicle carrying two undocumented immigrants and a U.S. citizen on Interstate 10 near Horizon City, Texas. Border Patrol agents assisted, and their investigation led to five migrants at a stash house in Clint, Texas.

On Friday, agents with the El Paso Sector Intelligence Operations Center led border agents to a possible stash house in San Elizario, Texas.

Border agents assigned to the Ysleta Station responded to the San Elizario residence and encountered five migrants. According to a news release, as border agents took the migrants into custody, a vehicle driven by a U.S. citizen pulled up, and, after being questioned, the driver allegedly admitted that they had dropped off migrants at that location before.

In both cases, agents arrested the drivers and expelled the migrants under Title 42, the public health rule that fast-tracks deportations of newly arrived migrants.

On Thursday, an arrest in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, led border agents in Las Cruces to three migrants in a motel room. Agents expelled two under Title 42 and arrested the third migrant on illegal reentry charges.

Two hours earlier, agents assigned to the El Paso Station’s Anti-Smuggling Unit and Homeland Security Investigations arrested 30 migrants in two apartments in the same undisclosed complex. Among those encountered were citizens from Mexico, Brazil, El Salvador, and Guatemala, all expelled to Mexico under Title 42.

Border agents assigned to the Ysleta Station’s Anti-Smuggling Unit also assisted El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies, who executed two warrants stemming from a previous smuggling investigation.

Three people told deputies they had been held captive without food or water for three days before escaping on Dec. 1, just north of Horizon City.

Deputies said the three people led them to a home on Ascencion Avenue, where they found an additional five migrants allegedly smuggled into the United States.

On Wednesday, deputies agents arrested Martha Salas-Gonzalez and Raul Eduardo Martinez Lujan on suspicion of smuggling of person. Deputies booked both into the El Paso County Jail with bonds set at $40,000.

“Holiday season or not, Transnational Criminal Organizations continue their exploitation of migrants,” El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez said in a statement. “We have extraordinary collaboration among law enforcement partners in our region, and we will continue to be relentless in targeting human smuggling and trafficking of persons.”

'On their own in the middle of a blizzard': Baby among 4 found dead near US, Canada border

www.usatoday.com

Four people, including a baby and a teenager, were found dead in frigid weather near the U.S.-Canada border and a Florida man is facing federal human smuggling charges as authorities in both countries describe a suspected failed border crossing attempt.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the victims were found about 40 feet north of the international border and are believed to be part of a group crossing from Canada into the U.S. on Wednesday.

Canadian officials say the group likely died of exposure to extreme cold. The deceased were found near the town of Emerson, Manitoba, which is roughly 150 miles north of Fargo, North Dakota.

On the U.S. side of the border, a Florida man was charged on Thursday with human smuggling. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota said Steve Shand, 47, appeared in court Thursday.

Shand was stopped by U.S. Border Patrol less than a mile south of the U.S.-Canada border, driving a 15-passenger van. Agents found two undocumented immigrants from India inside the van, according to the Department of Justice.

Border Patrol arrested Shand for smuggling undocumented foreign nationals. While he was being transported to a facility, law enforcement saw five other Indian immigrants about a quarter-mile south of the Canadian border, walking in the direction of where Shand was arrested.

The group told law enforcement that they had been walking around for 11 hours, and crossed the border expecting to be picked up by someone.

They were exhibiting severe signs of hypothermia and frostbite from exposure to the extreme cold and wind chill, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. Two were taken to the hospital.

One of the group members said he was carrying the backpack for a family of four  who had walked with his group earlier but became separated during the night. The backpack contained children’s clothes, a diaper, toys, and some children’s medication, the Department of Justice said.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy said at a Thursday news conference that human smuggling was suspected in the incident. "We’re very concerned that this attempted crossing may have been facilitated in some way and that these individuals, including an infant, were left on their own in the middle of a blizzard."

Shand remained in custody late Thursday. Authorities allege in court documents that Shand has likely been involved in other border crossings, including two recent incidents in December.

As of Thursday afternoon, the search on the Canadian side of the border has concluded, MacLatchy told USA TODAY.

The individuals, who would have been traversing agricultural fields filled with waist-high snow, would have faced "white out conditions" and temperatures below -40 degrees, accounting for wind chill.

MacLatchy added this is the first border crossing going north to south she has seen in her jurisdiction.

Previously, the number of people apprehended for illegally crossing from Canada into the United States along its northern border spiked around 2020, according to federal data. At the time, The Associated Press reported some migrants from Mexico appeared to find the northern border easier to cross than the southern border, for a variety of reasons.

Authorities search for migrants in Puerto Rico after capsize

www.miamiherald.com

Americas - U.S. search for missing migrants from capsized boat shifts to land in Puerto Rico

By Jacqueline Charles and Syra Ortiz-Blanes
Updated January 28, 2022 5:27 PM

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

U.S. authorities on Friday shifted their search for missing migrants from a capsized boat off Puerto Rico to land from water after 17 individuals were taken into custody hours after their makeshift craft hit a rock.

The accident happened near the Isabela shoreline and Coast Guard crews suspended their search at 12:15 p.m. after they did not find any survivors in the water, said spokesman Ricardo Castrodad.

Jeffrey Quiñones, a spokesman with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said questioning of the detained migrants suggests that there were 27 individuals on the boat, known as a yola, when it overturned and people started running inland. They are now continuing their search for 10 individuals. Quiñones said the migrants were from the Dominican Republic.

U.S. Coast Guard aircrews and emergency personnel launched their search after a 911 call at 12:58 a.m. Friday reported people running toward land and others in the water after a vessel overturned. The makeshift boat capsized about 75 yards off Shacks Beach in Isabela, an area with shallow waters and coral rocks.

The Coast Guard said the boat was smuggling people to the U.S. territory as part of an “illegal voyage.”

“At the moment they haven’t found anyone else” in the water, Castrodad said around mid-morning.

For months, Puerto Rico, like South Florida, has been seeing an uptick in illegal migration as desperate migrants from Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic attempt to reach the United States. The surge has made U.S. border officials increasingly worried about tragedies at sea.

“It doesn’t take much for a tragic situation to occur where everyone on a boat like this can lose their lives,” Castrodad said.

This is the second time in days that Coast Guard crews have searched for missing migrants. On Thursday night, the agency suspended its search for dozens of migrants after their boat capsized about 40 miles off Fort Pierce Inlet shortly after it left the Bahamas en route to Florida. Five bodies have been recovered since Wednesday and one survivor was rescued. There were 40 migrants on that boat when it capsized.

“Initial statements received from the survivors state there were 27 persons aboard the vessel before it capsized,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement. “Border Patrol authorities continue to work to determine how many people were actually on the vessel and how many others made it safely to shore.”

The U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday, 94 Dominicans were repatriated back to the Dominican Republic on board the Coast Guard Cutter Valiant following the interdiction of two illegal voyages, one on Monday and another on Wednesday, near Puerto Rico. Also on Thursday, the crew of another cutter, William Trump, returned 40 people to Cuba, after two interdictions at sea off Key West. One suspected smuggler was transferred to Homeland Security Investigations special agents, the Coast Guard said.

“To those looking to take part in an illegal voyage we can’t overstate to them that they not take to the seas,” said U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Mickey Wenk, Sector San Juan chief of enforcement. “Many persons taking part in an illegal voyage do not realize the perils associated with crossing the Mona Passage; the dangers are quite real and the journey is just not worth it. People risk drowning by going overboard, capsizing, or the vessel breaking apart. They also do not realize they could face criminal prosecution or be returned to their country of origin.”

The boat that a large group of 45 Haitian migrants reportedly used to get to Rincón, Puerto Rico, on Jan. 24, 2022. Erica Amon

Quiñones, the CBP spokesperson, said on Thursday that Border Patrol agents in Puerto Rico detained 25 Haitians after they arrived at about 3 a.m. in the town of Aguada, bordering the Atlantic Ocean on the island’s west coast. The group included 12 men and 13 women. That same day, another group of Haitian migrants — 17 men and 10 women — also arrived in the beachside town of Rincón on the west coast.

It was the second time this week that Haitian migrants were reported landing in Rincón, a quiet town known for its world-famous surfing.

On Monday, residents and tourists reported seeing 45 Haitian migrants wash up ashore in a small wooden canoe. They were taken by authorities to Ramey Station for processing and removal.

Since October, U.S. Coast Guard crews have interdicted 702 Dominicans, 248 Haitians, and 50 others of different nationalities in the Mona Passage and near Puerto Rico, compared to 463 Dominicans and 15 Haitians the previous fiscal year, which ended on Sept. 30, 2021.
