Concerns about the omicron variant of COVID-19 continue to grow, health officials are warning the winter could bring a dangerous surge in cases and hospitalizations

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Insitute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN... "The one thing that's very clear, and there's no doubt about this, is its extraordinary capability of spreading, its transmissibility capability. It is just, you know, raging through the world, really," Fauci said. COVID's traditional symptoms include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, headache, fatigue, sore throat, congestion or runny nose and, most recognizable, a new loss of taste or smell.... Omicron is spreading rapidly in London and is expected to become the dominant strain by Christmas, according to scientists. The current top five symptoms are:

1. Runny nose
2. Headache
3. Fatigue, ranging from mild to severe
4. Sneezing
5. Sore throat

"As our latest data shows, Omicron symptoms are predominantly cold symptoms, runny nose, headache, sore throat and sneezing, so people should stay at home as it might well be COVID," said professor Tim Spector, lead scientist on the ZOE COVID Study app. "We are also seeing two to three times as many mild infections in people with boosters in Omicron areas as we do in Delta variant areas, but they are still very protective and a vital weapon."

The first U.S. case of omicron was identified on Dec. 1 in California, less than a month after it was found in Botswana on Nov. 11 and South Africa on Nov. 14. Research indicates omicron could be more transmissible than the current delta variant that remains the dominant strain in the U.S.
