NEW YORK— Drug companies are working to develop a pure, more powerful version of the nation'ssecond most-abusedmedicine, which has addiction expertsworried thatitcould spura new wave of abuse.

The new pillscontain thehighly addictive painkillerhydrocodone, packing upto 10 timesthe amountof the drug asexisting medicationssuch asVicodin. Four companies have begun patienttesting, and oneof them – ZOGenix of San Diego –plansto apply early next year to begin marketing its product, Zohydro.

If

approved, it wouldmark the first time patients couldlegally buy pure hydrocodone. Existing products combine the drug with nonaddictive painkillers suchasacetaminophen.

OxyContin, introduced in 1995 by Purdue Pharma of Stamford, Conn., was designed to manage pain with a formula thatdribbledone doseof oxycodone over many hours.

Abusers quickly discoveredthey could defeatthe timed-release featureby crushing the pills. Purdue Pharma changed the formula to make OxyContin more tamper-resistant, but addictshave moved onto generic oxycodone and other drugs thatdo nothave a timed-release feature.

Might I add that it is the white race which prescription pain meds are mostly abused
For one reason or another. I.am well.versed in this. Number Florida is the pill mill capital of the world. Two I lost my family because at the time my wife 24. Went to a pain clinic. She worked hard and was hurting. However they sent her home with enough medicine to kill herself and forget work. Too boot Florida paid for it all mother on medical insurance cause of our daughter. It was a very slow decline then she was gone.

Exactly starts as ok,  they're prescribed to me. Well opiates are both mentally addicting as well.as physically addicting. Sad. My.God the young white girls gone. It's so sad ...
at 17 they've started on the worlds Strongest pain pill oxycodone or people dieing of cancer.

That is why the media here (in Australia) sometimes refer to prescription medication as legal drugs and anything else as illegal drugs. Legal or illegal and no matter how obtained, a drug is a drug is a drug.
