Couple Married for 76 Years and Born Just a Day Apart Celebrated 100th Birthday Together

One of Britain's longest-married couples have celebrated their 100th birthday together—and that too, just days after marking their 76th wedding anniversary. Eric and Dorothy Dowdy tied the knot on April 3, 1945... Eric was born on April 11, 1921, a day before Dorothy. The couple, who have three grown-up children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild... "The trick to living a long life is healthy food, with the occasional chocolate treat and a glass of sherry," Dorothy said. "I was particularly attracted to his smart dress sense and his fabulous sense of humor," she added, speaking of what made her fall in love with Eric. Eric said: "I can't tell you the secret to a long and happy marriage else it will fall apart." The couple met in the 1940s when Dorothy was working as a stage manager at the Royal and Derngate Theater in Northampton and Eric was working as an actor in a play. They married in St. Matthews Church near their first home in Northampton and went on to have three children: Carlene, 75, Elizabeth, 70, and Matthew, 60. All three siblings have followed in their parents' footsteps by working in theater and acting abroad.

 

They lived together until April 2018, when Eric moved into the care home due to ill health. However, just five months later, Dorothy joined her husband after they were unable to cope with being apart. "I couldn't stand to be away from him and I'm not getting any younger," Dorothy said. "If you can't beat them, join them." The couple, who received matching telegrams from the Queen to mark their 100th birthdays, are now one of Britain's longest-married couples. Now for the kicker! The whole purpose of the British monarchy is to maintain tradition (and hold the country together) And I see this story as a sharp contrast to today. This couple represents loyalty, trust, faith and endurance. Everything that is lacking in today's society. Will it now come to this to preserve our family life? It has already happened in South Africa.  And it's happening here...

There is only one place that lot could be from!

That aside and keeping with topic my mother's family was something big!
My Grand parents had 7 kids, celebrated 70 years of marriage and my Grandpa recently died at 106 years of age.

They came to Australia with only a suitcase and no English (only knew Italian), learned it quick, worked hard and contributed. Even rode his bike 20 km daily just to get work.
They just don't build families/people like that now. I am not even half the man he was.

The whole purpose of the British monarchy is to maintain tradition

Actually, the whole purpose of the British Monarchy is to keep lifelong and hereditary power out of the hands of one man, woman or family; and to maintain the power of originally the Lords or major hereditary land owners, and today/for now ... the elected of Parliament. The proof of that is whenever the Monarchy opposes Parliament, the Monarch is deposed and replaced - sometimes having their heads cut off.

Modern Times: British Monarchs Deposed by Parliament
* CHARLES 1 1625 – 1649: Replaced by Oliver Cromwell as an hereditary Dictator
* JAMES II England and VII of Scotland 1685 – 1688: Replaced by a Dutch ring-in
* Edward VIII 1936: The current Queen's uncle, Uncle Eddie was replaced by her father

The US, by contrast, has an Elected King, with the POTUS retaining the combined power of King and Prime Minister. While Australia pretends it has a Monarchy, but in practice follows the American model - although Constitutionally/on paper at least, the Australian Prime Minister answers to a Governor General.

The UK's hereditary House of Lords is only a few short years away from becoming a wholly elected body. Once that occurs, the demand will be to rename the Upper House to a Senate (Post Colonial racism and all that bullshit). Following that, what use is there for a remaining and compliant Monarch/Highest Lord, who merely does as they are told by the ruling Prime Minister and Parliament?

The British Monarchy is as popular as a family of Hollywood narcissists, and as disposable as a dead Kennedy.
