The bedraggled migrants from a caravan from Honduras are now crammed into a filthy sports complex on the Mexico-US border, resigned for a long wait
Thousands of Central American migrants are digging in for the long haul at a filthy, overcrowded sports complex in sight of the United States, while a small number have opted to return home after clashes with border forces dimmed hopes of crossing.

The bedraggled men, women and children of a caravan of mostly Hondurans began cramming into the complex in Tijuana about three weeks ago. They now number more than 6000 in a space the city government first prepared for a third as many.

As the reality sinks in that those seeking asylum in the United States will likely have to remain in the Mexican border city for months, 350 people have asked authorities to help them travel home
Jose Luis Tepeu, 22, from Guatemala, was sleeping on cardboard boxes on the ground. He said he would only wait five more days to see if help would come to take him to the United States, or even Canada.

"If they don't come, I'll return to my home," he said, saying that salaries in Mexico were too low for him to stay and send money home to help his family. "You don't earn well here."

To seek asylum, migrants must first sign onto a waiting list to see US border officials. The list already had a weeks-long backlog before the caravan came. Adding to uncertainty are US-Mexico talks aimed at keeping migrants in Mexico longer.

On Sunday, US border guards fired tear gas canisters at a smaller group, including women and children, that rushed the border.

The violence seems to have shocked some, and dozens more asked to be sent home voluntarily on Monday, said Rodolfo Olimpo, a migration official in Tijuana


I don't Know why Mexico hasn't done more to round them up for deportation? They think within 5 days they can just get the paperwork done for Asylum legally and either Canada or the US will welcome them in?

I feel sorry for the US, having this sort of menace is going to be a problem until they get a better wall than that fence they have now that these guys seem able to climb over easily.

Disgusting tactics! Push women and kids first towards boarder while men throw projectiles at US agents.

Apparently they have nails tacked togeather to make tyre piercing thorns to try slow down US vehicles on the US side of the boarder.

They think they got a better chance of getting to the US by grabbing kids. They are grabbing any old child and saying that they are their own kids and if they do get into the US what then becomes of the children that they have "STOLEN"?!

Trump: 'Grabber' migrants used children as human shields at border

At a Monday night roundtable in Mississippi on his bipartisan criminal justice reform effort, President Trump charged that some migrants he identified as "grabbers" who rushed the San Ysidro, Calif., point of entry on Sunday essentially used children as human shields at the border.

"We've had some very violent people, and we don't want, frankly, those people in our society," Trump said at the Biloxi event, which included Mississippi law enforcement officials and South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. "We don't want those people in our country. Three Border Patrol people yesterday were very badly hurt, getting hit with rocks and stones."

Earlier Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan said four agents wearing protective gear were hit with rocks during an "extremely dangerous situation," but were not badly hurt.

The president turned to the widely circulated images from Sunday's episode, which showed some migrants running away with children as tear gas canisters landed nearby. Videos and images from the port of entry also showed migrants throwing what appeared to be rocks over the fence and attempting to breach the wall.

McAleenan said Monday that at least 69 people were detained after they crossed the border on Sunday, and that he was not aware of any that managed to cross and evade capture by U.S. authorities.

Trump continued: "In some cases, you know, they're not the parents. These are people, they call 'em 'grabbers' -- they grab the child, because they think they're gonna have a certain status by having a child. You know, you have certain advantages and things with our crazy laws that frankly Congress should be changing. You know, if you change the laws, you wouldn't have this problem

The president clarified that "they feel an advantage when they're with a young child. ... They call 'em grabbers, that's a term I've heard. ... They grab a child, because when they have a child, they feel a lot safer. ... When you know there's going to be potential violence, you know there's going to be tear gas or something -- you don't take your child and bring them there. I can say that all over the border, you have a lot of grabbers, you have a lot of people who grab children, and they have no idea who these children are. They're not parents. They have no idea. And frankly to release the children to these people is a disaster."

In a statement late Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen backed up Trump's comments.
