The drunken 50-year-old *BOONG*told police he had been on a bender and had drunk about four litres of wine over the past few days.

What a load of bull-dust! That's like saying, "It's not my fault I killed a coon. I was on a bender and had three glasses of beer over the last three days!" That Abo will be sentenced to time served and get a fine - which will of course be paid by the tax payer.

Justice Judith Kelly's words lingered in the air of the NT Supreme Court yesterday as a husband was sentenced to 14 years jail for killing his wife in a horrific case of domestic violence.



Conway Stevenson bashed Terasita Bigfoot to death during a sustained, three-hour attack at Bagot Community on November 26, 2013.

Stevenson was void of emotion as Justice Kelly recounted how he killed his wife.

The pair had been drinking with different people throughout the day. Stevenson got angry when Ms Bigfoot decided to spend time with her cousin rather than him.

A little while later – about 5pm – Stevenson hit Ms Bigfoot with a black crate. About 7pm he told his grandmother he was going to "bash my wife". It was about then the attack began.

Ms Bigfoot was punched and kicked multiple times in the face. She was hit with a stick, stomped on, dragged and had her head banged against the bitumen.

Justice Kelly told the court numerous people walked past the area during the three hours. No one intervened or called the police.

No one went to see if someone had been hurt after Stevenson returned to a house covered in blood.

Stevenson – 28 at the time of the attack – went to sleep and woke the next morning to find Ms Bigfoot had died.

His grandmother called police and Stevenson was arrested after he was found crying near his wife's body.

Justice Kelly said the young woman suffered a broken jaw, broken ribs, a distorted face and internal bleeding during the attack.

She died as a result of the injuries and alcohol poisoning.


What animals even to their own sort! I mean there were others viewing this violence and it took 3 hours for any of these child like clowns to phone
the cops! I hate sharing the community with these unpredictable alcoholics!

A WOMAN has been indecently assaulted while asleep in a van in Darwin City. 
 
Police are calling for witnesses to the incident, which occurred on the Esplanade in the vicinity of Peel St about 2.30am Wednesday.

Senior Constable Anya Hoffman said police believed the woman was asleep in the van with her partner when an unknown man entered the van and indecently assaulted her.

The woman woke up and the man fled.

   
"The woman has attended Darwin police station and reported the incident a short time later," she said.

Sen-Constable Hoffman said police were investigating how the man accessed the van.

She said it's not known if he entered through a door or window, or if the van was locked. It's unknown how long the ­attack lasted.

No witnesses have yet come forward. Sen-Constable Hoffman said it was not known if the couple had spent long in the area.

The alleged offender is described as being of Aboriginal or Islander appearance, about 172cm tall, aged in his early to mid-30s with short dark curly hair. He was wearing beige coloured shorts, a turquoise shirt and thongs or sandals.

Sen-Constable Hoffman said tourists should be cautious when camping.

TWO brawls involving as many as 150 people have ended a football carnival in Papunya and put a man in hospital.

The injured man was hit in the head with what was believed to be a wheel brace and flown to Alice Springs with non-life threatening injuries.

It came during the final between teams from Hermannsburg and Haasts Bluff when spectators rushed the field at about 2.30pm on Tuesday.

Acting Superintendent Michael Potts said the melee was believed to have involved between 100-150.

He said the tension was sparked about an hour earlier when a similar number of people ran onto the field for a brawl during the Hermannsburg and Mt Liebig game.


Officials had managed to clear the field and resume, but the carnival was cancelled when the second fight erupted.

Acting Superintendent Potts said an off-duty sergeant at the carnival raised the alarm and ran to the aid of a woman who was believed to have been knocked out.

Supporting officers came from neighbouring stations including Yuendumu and Kintore

Community sources familiar with the incident suggested many who had run onto the ground were not actually involved in the fighting.

They said a recent death may have contributed to the tension.

Acting Superintendent Potts said there was sorry business in the area he did not believe it to be a cause.

"A lot of these things will happen when some communities get together at times when normally they probably wouldn't be together," he said.

"There may be some underlying issues there, unresolved issues from the past, and basically that results in minor disputes and unfortunately they an escalate from there."

He said most outsiders, including the teams involved, had left the community.

A WOMAN who fought off a sex attacker on her walk home from work has been described as brave by police, after escaping her ordeal at a popular Fannie Bay walking path. 
 
Detective Senior Sergeant Janelle Tonkin said the attacker chased the 29-year-old woman into the middle of East Point Rd during the violent incident just after 7pm on Monday. She said the attacker then pulled the woman off the road and sexually assaulted her.

Sen-Sgt Tonkin said that the woman courageously fought her attacker throughout the 10-minute ordeal and eventually broke free and ran to a passer-by for help.

"She was very brave in her attempts to fight this offender off," she said.

The woman suffered cuts, bruises and grazes and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment. She said the attacker stole the woman's bag and ran from the scene.


Police were still searching for the attacker last night and called for witnesses to come forward.

"I would suggest that if ­anyone was in the area at the time they would likely have seen what occurred," Sen-Sgt Tonkin said.

"She was pulled to the ground, she did fight for about 10 minutes with the man before he grabbed her handbag and ran off."

The male was described as being of indigenous appearance, and about 18 years old.

AFTER enduring 19 years of shoplifting, Dallas Mackay of the Gray Supermarket has had enough and said it was time thieves(BOONGS) were made to compensate shopkeepers for pilfering.

Mr Mackay's call for action follows a raid on his shop on Saturday night involving seven people who stole liquor.

After being pursued by staff who retrieved some of the stolen alcohol, gang members returned to the shop, smashed the glass front door and assaulted a staff member.

"People who steal have to be held accountable and made to pay back the value of what they took," Mr Mackay said yesterday.

"Shoplifters have to be taken seriously," he said.


The Gray Supermarket is a family business and yesterday Mr Mackay, 31, and his father Lyle were still dealing with the latest bout of shoplifting and the angry response from the thieves.

Mr Mackay yesterday examined the shop's CCTV footage to prepare a package for the Palmerston Police.

After dealing with shoplifting for almost 20 years the Mackays now have 14 CCTV cameras protecting their business.

And because so many thieves have tried to walk, or run, out of the store carrying "bulk" items the Mackays had to change the shop's exit to a "raceway" so all customers pass the check-out.

"On Saturday they've come in as a group and sussed out the supermarket and where people were inside it and spread right out to try their luck at stealing alcohol," Mr Mackay said.

"As soon as the check-out staff and other members in the store fronted the thieves they were threatened.

"One of the staff was told that if he said anything, he'd get his head punched in.

"Once the guys came back into the store with the stolen liquor, they'd have thought it was all over.

"But shortly after two men entered with a lot of aggression, smashing my front door and then got in the face of one of the staff members, shouldering him and then the next guy assaulted the staff member.

Mr Mackay said it took Police about 45 minutes to respond to the incident.
