Extract: ONE person has been killed ... THREE FOUR FIVE SIX people including a 10 year old child and a baby have been killed, 20 37 are hurt including four young children and shots were fired during a wild police chase through Melbourne's Bourke St Mall.

Police shot a man before arresting him.

Italian tourist Stefano Pavan said he thought that the man was yelling, "Allah Akbar" while he was doing burnouts on the corner of Flinders and Swanston street, Mr Pavan said the man looked middle eastern and there was loud Arabic music blaring from his car.

"People were screaming because he was just going crazy," he said. "But it was like he was waiting for the police.

Mr Pavan said the man was screaming and shouting and doing the burnouts close to where the horse drawn carriages are on Swanston Street.

Police say the incident is not connected to terrorism and no one else is being sought.

A baby thrown from a pram was severely injured later died.
Witness reports say the baby was seen to go under the wheels of the car.

"We do believe it is connected to an earlier stabbing in the southern metro region," Commander Bateson said.

Following the stabbing, it is alleged the same man took a woman, who is known to him, hostage in his car.

Police are begging for information but refuse to release any names or descriptions. Victorian police are well known for obfuscating events in order to quell what they claim would be a racist backlash.

Extract: VICTORIA'S Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton has confirmed the driver of the vehicle that "intentionally" ploughed into pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD is a 26-year-old man known to police.

The man police believe is responsible for today's atrocity is 26-year-old Dimitrious Gargasoulas.

Mr Ashton confirmed the 26-year-old man had been "coming to our attention more recently over recent days in relation to assaults, family violence-related assaults".

"What we do know of the person is there is an extensive family violence history involved. He has come to our attention on many occasions in the past.

"We have mental health and drug-related issues in the background of this particular person. He has been coming to our attention more recently over recent days in relation to assaults, family violence-related assaults."

Extract: 76-year-old neighbour, Gavin Wilson said James Gargasoulas was a "nice kid", but on Wednesday night he became violent.

He said he came into his flat with a Bible, sat down and started burning it before throwing the burning book into his face.

"I flicked it onto the floor then he stood up and punched me," Mr Wilson said.

He said Mr Gargasoulas then attacked him. "Give me your (car) keys or I'll gouge your eyes out," Mr Gargasoulas allegedly demanded.

Mr Wilson, owner of the car (used in the attack), has also expressed disbelief at Friday's horrific rampage. "It's a terrible thing. I can't believe it," he said. "I feel awful".

A three-month-old baby boy has died in hospital after a car ploughed into pedestrians in Melbourne's Bourke Street pedestrian mall on Friday, bringing the death toll to five.

Police confirmed the boy's death late yesterday, after Victorian Police Commissioner Graham Ashton earlier warned the toll could rise.

A 10-year-old girl, a 25-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman died at the scene just after the alleged attack about 1.30pm Friday, and a 33-year-old man died in hospital that night.

The mother of a boy who was violently attacked and had his phone stolen by a group of eight teens at Highpoint says nobody stepped in to help her son.

Jasmine Moey's son had just watched a movie at the Maribyrnong shopping centre when he and a friend went to the toilets on Friday, January 21 about 7.15pm.

Her son was bashed and robbed.

"He was punched in the left eye," she told 3AW Radio. "There was eight of them in the cubicle and they were attacking his friend as well in the other corner."

Before they took his phone the teens allegedly made her son unlock it and turn off the the feature that tracks iPhones.

At least two adult men were allegedly present in the cubicles at the time. "Nobody helped," Ms Moey said.

In a statement, police said two 14-year-old boys were approached near the toilets by a group of up to nine teenagers perceived to be of African appearance. "Both victims had their phones stolen and the one was punched, suffering bruising to his face."
