During an ABC Radio interview, Mr Mayo criticised the way the No campaign used digital platforms to connect with voters.

All six states voted the proposal down. Nationally, only 39.6 per cent of the population voted Yes, with 60.4 per cent - close to nine million voters - opposed.

'It was difficult because we were running an honest campaign... whereas the No campaign could talk about anything, and they did,' he claimed.

'They had fearmongering... I think the media really struggled and failed somewhat to expose all of that in a way that got through to Australians,' Mr Mayo said.

The Federal government has vowed to crack down on misinformation and disinformation through the new misinformation bill.
 
The proposed bill would give the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) stronger powers to deal with [criminalise] 'content that is false, misleading or deceptive'.

Advance's executive director Matthew Sheahan warned the Yes campaigners would pivot to the misinformation bill.

'Australia handed them a flogging that will sting for decades, believe me,' he said.

Mr Sheahan warned the Yes camp is 'regrouping'.

'Why do you think they're already talking about new laws to make 'misinformation' a crime?'

Excerpt: Thomas Mayo, who was one of the most prominent Yes campaigners, said without a Voice to Parliament there would not be substantial progress in Indigenous welfare.

He is pushing for Labor and the Coalition to create a Voice body through legislation, instead of inserting it into the constitution.

That would negate the need to poll Australians and flies in the face of the Yes campaigners' argument that a legislated Voice would be too easy to silence.

His plea comes despite the Yes campaigner previously claiming a representative body for Indigenous Australians would not be effective if brought in by an Act of Parliament.

'It was easy for a hostile federal government to silence ATSIC (the CORRUPT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission) because it was merely an Act of Parliament. Constitutional enshrinement of a Voice is different. It can only be achieved by way of a referendum, not by an Act of Parliament,' he wrote for Junkee in July.

'A successful referendum will make it a permanent and politically strong voice because of the support from the Australian people.'

Support for a treaty with First Nations people has slumped while approval for a truth-telling commission has languished after the Voice referendum was defeated.

Only about a third of voters now support these measures, which along with the Voice, were the three pillars of the Uluru Statement from the Heart that the Albanese government had committed to fulfilling.

Backing for the treaty has fallen from 58 per cent in October to 33 per cent this month, according to a Resolve Political Monitor survey done for the Nine News mastheads.

Meanwhile only 34 percent are in favour of a truth-telling body, with 31 per cent opposed and 34 per cent undecided.

Excerpt: Stan Grant has lashed out at the Australian media and the treatment of Indigenous journalists during the Voice to Parliament referendum.

The former ABC presenter officially quit the public broadcaster in August, months after he went on leave following a barrage of racial abuse.

He has since taken up a new career as a journalism professor at Melbourne's Monash University.

Speaking at CONVERGE, the annual conference of First Nations Media Australia in Canberra, Grant called out what he saw as negative traits of his former profession. 

'We should not hide behind the lies of objectivity and neutrality,' he told attendees on Tuesday.

Grant criticised the treatment of Indigenous journalists during the Voice to Parliament referendum, who he claimed were lambasted for telling the truth.

Grant said this treatment was at odds with how the claim colonisation had benefitted Indigenous Australians was received. 

He said the media had taken truth and 'yindyamarra' and 'turned it into hate'.

Yindyamarra is a word from the language of the Wiradjuri people of central New South Wales, and broadly means 'respect'. 

'It remains a hostile environment [for those who want to tell the truth] ... it has put poison in the bloodstream of society,' he said.
