'Barbie' director Greta Gerwig wants the movie's viewers to 'feel like I did at Shabbat dinner'

Greta Gerwig, who conceived and directed the buzzy live-action film released this month, told The New York Times that she hopes watching the movie will be a quasi-spiritual activity for its viewers. The feeling she wants to achieve, she said, is the same one she felt as a child when she was a guest at the Shabbat dinners of close family friends who were observant Jews.

"I remember feeling the sense of, 'Whatever your wins and losses were for the week, whatever you did or you didn't do, when you come to this table, your value has nothing to do with that,'" Gerwig told The New York Times of the Shabbat dinners.

Gerwig is winning acclaim for transforming Barbie from a stagnant symbol of capitalism and women's oppression into a canvas for exploring self-discovery, through an accidental jaunt from the toy world into the real one. The movie's lead writer, Noah Baumbach, is Gerwig's Jewish partner and co-parent. Its stars include Jewish actress Rhea Perlman as the doll's real-life Jewish creator, Ruth Handler.

The movie is the first for Mattel, the toy company that Handler and her husband grew into an empire. Mattel has always closely guarded the Barbie brand, but under the leadership of the Israeli-American Ynon Kreiz, who has served as its CEO since 2018, it is loosening the reins. The company has embarked on more than 100 brand partnerships in conjunction with the movie, that are expected to generate billions of dollars in revenue. Other toy-spinoff movies are in the works.

Looks Like 'Barbie' Marketing Was a Bait-and-Switch for Preachy Propaganda

Warner Bros' Barbie film is tracking for a huge opening weekend, beating Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to take the crown for the best Thursday previews box-office haul of the year. But early reviews have revealed the Greta Gerwig-directed picture devolves into a series of moralizing monologues — not the light, fun adventure promised in its marketing.

Excerpt: The trailers for Barbie did not give away much of the film's plot — just that producer and star Margot Robbie's character lives in an idyllic world resembling the aesthetics of the iconic toys, and when she starts to notice imperfections, she embarks on a quest to the Real World to find the answers to her new dilemmas.

However, several conservative commentators have called out Barbie for getting bogged down in culture-war pedantry. Robert Barnes, a lawyer who has defended clients such as Nick Sandmann and Kyle Rittenhouse, calls the movie a "bait-and-switch" that is not geared toward children at all:

YouTuber Lauren Chen reveals a major subplot is Ryan Gosling's Ken discovering the real world is patriarchal and enthusiastically importing toxic masculinity back into Barbie World, which is matriarchal. "The lengths the studio went to hide how INSUFFERABLY WOKE this movie is are astounding," she writes.

Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto says the film "drowns in feminism" and the only thing missing from its man-hating script is a few Handmaid's Tale robes.

Another: Gerwig and Baumbach promote querulous sloganeering... They spout outdated grievances about women's ability to "hold logic and feeling at the same time," adding irrational complaints about women not being credited for the "control of trains or the flow of commerce."

... Barbie grouses about "sexualized capitalism" and pouts "I'm not pretty."

... America Ferrera and Issa Rae give abominable speeches about Latino and black feminist sacrifice.

... Gerwig tosses in terms such as "irrepressible thoughts of death," "Proustian flashback," and "patriarchy anxiety."


Woke Is So Hated, 'Barbie' Had to Hide It

Barbie didn't sell itself as woke or political. It sold itself as candy-colored escapism and glamour, a girly-girl movie filled with beautiful people.

Barbie is not dumping all over what came before. No one had to fear that Luke Skywalker would be twisted into a misanthropic child killer or that Indiana Jones would get punched out by a homely, 75-pound Fleabag. Barbie is its own thing.

Barbie is a massively popular brand and has been for more than a half-century.

Barbie is an original movie. Like the three other box office hits of the year — Super Mario Bros., Oppenheimer, and Sound of Freedom.

Make no mistake; Barbie is a massive-massive-massive hit, a cultural phenomenon. It opened bigger than Top Gun: Maverick ($127 million compared to $155 million), but Warner Bros. knew it had to hide the woke, had to bury the feminist crybabying, and sold it as something else entirely—as girly fluff.

This tells me Hollywood has finally conceded that woke equals box office poison. Now we will just have to see how long the industry gets away with more bait-and-switches or, if Barbie becomes the secret recipe for successfully selling a crybaby ideology to the masses.

Excerpt: Barbie director Greta Gerwig has revealed that the crew were left in tears by America Ferrera's powerful monologue about the complexities of being a woman.

One of the standout moments of the film sees America's character Gloria - a human - comforting Barbie (Margot Robbie) as the doll struggles with an existential crisis.   

Gloria delivers an epic speech in which she states that it's 'impossible to be a woman', explaining that you have to 'tie yourself into knots' to make other people like you while ultimately whatever goes wrong is then blamed on women anyway.

Speaking to The Atlantic about capturing the scene, Greta revealed: 'When America was giving her beautiful speech, I was just sobbing, and then I looked around and I realized everybody's crying on the set.'

While the speech was aimed at women, Greta revealed that even the male crew members were in tears, explaining: 'The men are crying, too, because they have their own speech they feel they can't ever give, you know?

You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining.

You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood.

But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful.

You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line.

It's too hard! It's too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.

I'm just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us.
