A (White) Spanish couple wept bitterly as they walked towards the local police station to give up their four-year-old (black) foster son after losing a custody battle to his teenage mother.
Albert Bordes and Noelia Estornell thought they would be given leave to legally adopt the boy after his alcoholic 15-year-old birth mother relinquished him – but authorities had other plans.
The streets of Patraix, Valencia were lined with supporters as Bordes and Estornell carried the toddler, who they took into their home when he was 18 months old, towards the place where they would say goodbye.
"He doesn't understand what is going on," Bordes told the media.
"He is upset and angry with us because instead of us taking him to school we are giving him to a lady who he doesn't know.
"I told him we are only doing it because we are forced to. I told him we love him very much and will fight for him."
The pair say they will appeal the decision in the European Court of Human Rights if necessary, according to The Local.
Their lawyer described the Supreme Court's decision to grant the birth mother custody as a "legal aberration", while the president of the adoption agency that handled the foster placement in the first place said the sittuation (sic) is a "serious failure of child protection".
