Jewish leaders have reacted with horror after a German far-right leader who has been compared to Adolf Hitler captained the nationalist AfD party into second place in a state election last night. 

Björn Höcke's party surged to 23 per cent of the vote in Thuringia, beating Angela Merkel's CDU into third place.

Mr Höcke, who has criticised Berlin's Holocaust memorial and questioned whether Hitler was 'entirely evil', stormed out of a TV interview during the campaign after his rhetoric was compared to that of the Nazi dictator.

Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, accused the AfD of using 'cheap racist propaganda'.

'Anyone who voted for the AfD on Sunday shares responsibility for the gradual undermining of the foundations of our democracy,' he said.

The AfD's success could no longer be dismissed as a 'protest vote', because there was no denying the hard-right ideology of the party's Thuringia branch, he said.

Charlotte Knobloch, a Holocaust survivor who heads Munich's Jewish community, said that 'something fundamental has gone off the rails in our political system

AfD supporters had 'backed a party that has for years prepared the ground for exclusion and violence of the far-right,' she warned.   

Christoph Heubner, deputy president of the International Auschwitz Committee, which represents survivors of the Nazi death camp, also voiced fears over the result.

'For survivors of German concentration camps, this strong increase in votes for the AfD is a new terrifying sign that raises fear of a further consolidation of right-wing extremist trends and attitudes in Germany,' he said.

Many East Germans still feel disadvantaged nearly 30 years since the Berlin Wall came down and the West's traditional parties never had deep roots there.

Founded in 2013, the anti-immigrant AfD has profited from anger over Angela Merkel's refugee policies and entered the German national parliament for the first time in 2017. 

The party's strong result last night came just weeks after an anti-Semitic attack in Halle - also in the East - in which two people were shot dead near a synagogue.

One in Four Germans Hold Antisemitic Beliefs, Antisemitism Rising Amongst 'Elites'


A new study has found that more than one-in-four Germans have anti-semitic beliefs, claiming that antisemitism is on the rise amongst the nation's 'elites'.
German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on Wednesday statistics from a study commissioned by the World Jewish Congress (WJC). The study found that 27 per cent of all Germans held antisemitic beliefs.

Nearly half claimed that Jews are more loyal to the state of Israel than to Germany, and 41 per cent felt that Jews talked about the Holocaust "too much".

A rising trend of antisemitism was seen amongst college-educated German 'elites' with an income of 100,000 euros or more per year.

The study stated that 18 per cent 'elites' held antisemitic beliefs, with 28 per cent feeling that Jews have too much control over the economy, and 26 per cent believing that they have too much power in shaping world politics.

(CNN) The German city of Dresden has declared a "Nazi emergency" after years of "right-wing extremist, racist" activity in the city, a local councilor says.

Dresden city councilors this week passed a resolution warning that the far-right was growing in strength in the eastern German city.

"The word 'Nazinotstand' is an exaggerated formulation for the fact that there is a serious problem -- similar to the climate emergency -- with right-wing extremism right up to the middle of society," Max Aschenbach, councilor for the satirist Die Partei (The Party), told CNN.
Aschenbach, who tabled the motion, told CNN the move was symbolic and would have no legal consequences, but that it served to highlight the threat posed by the far right in Dresden.

Dresden is where the the PEGIDA movement (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West) first emerged in 2013, and regular rallies are still held in the city

Anti-immigrant sentiment runs high in the state of Saxony, of which Dresden is the capital: The Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) won 27.5% of the vote in this year's state election.

The AfD became the first far-right party to enter Germany's national parliament in almost 60 years when it came in third place overall in federal elections in 2017.

Aschenbach said his resolution, which was put forward to show commitment to a "democratic, open, pluralistic society," was put to a vote by Dresden's city council on Wednesday, and passed by 39 votes to 29.

"For years, politicians have failed to position themselves clearly and unequivocally against the right-wing extremists, and to outlaw them," Aschenbach told CNN, adding that he wanted Dresden's city council to support citizens' initiatives, education and culture in the city.

A German school has reported three of its own pupils to police after they allegedly chanted anti-Semitic songs on their way back from a concentration camp visit. 

Students at a school in Hesse had been taken on a trip to the Buchenwald prison camp where more than 50,000 people died during World War II.

The trip was intended to teach pupils about the horrors of the Nazis, but on the coach home three boys allegedly started playing racist songs on their smartphones and singing along. 

Teachers reported the boys to police and they are now being investigated for a possible hate crime, regional broadcaster Hessenschau reported.

The three Year Nine boys, all aged 14, attend a comprehensive school in western Germany which was once hailed as a model in tackling extremism.

State culture minister Alexander Lorz praised the school for reporting the alleged hate crime to authorities, according to German media

'Hateful singing and abuse are not trivial offences. It has to be made clear to young people that we won't put up with something like this in our country,' he said.

The local authority in Gießen has also voiced its support for the school management after the boys were reported to police.

Police confirmed last week that they were investigating a possible hate crime but said they could not provide further details

According to the foundation which runs the Buchenwald museum, more than 56,000 people died at the camp during World War II.

Among that number were 8,000 Soviet prisoners of war who were shot to death 'in a killing facility erected especially for that purpose,' the museum explains. 

Opened in 1937 by the SS, the camp was built to house political prisoners, Jews, gypsies and other groups persecuted by the Nazis.

Some 280,000 people were imprisoned there after war broke out and were forced to work for the German munitions industry.

The camp was liberated by American troops in 1945 in the last days of the Nazi regime
