FUGITIVE killer driver Puneet Puneet has pleaded for help from the Indian Government on the eve of his likely extradition to Australia, saying he feared he wouldn't live to return home.

Puneet, 24, made an emotional apology for the drunken, high-speed car crash in which he killed student Dean Hofstee in Melbourne in 2008.

"I feel so sorry. It was an accident," he said.

"I didn't see him."

He said his parents had tried to do well in life (by sending him to Australia to study).

"But there was the accident that happened that ruined my life," he said.

Puneet, who fled Australia on a friend's passport after admitting guilt over the fatal accident, spent four years on the run in India before being caught on November 29.

He was remanded to appear in Delhi on Friday, where it's possible his extradition could be ordered immediately.

Puneet was drunk and driving at almost 150km/h when he crashed into Mr Hofstee and his friend, Clancy Coker, on City Rd, Southbank, at 12.50am on October 1, 2008.

The learner driver, then 19, fled the scene. When arrested he recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.165.

Puneet pleaded guilty in February 2009 to culpable driving and negligently causing serious injury and was bailed on strict conditions, including surrendering his Indian passport.

But on June 12, before he could be sentenced, he managed to flee to India using friend Sukhcharanjit Singh's passport. Until he was caught late last month

Puneet, supported by his parents, faced court with his mouth covered by a mask and also, inexplicably, had an arm in a sling.

He said yesterday that facing justice in Australia where he could be hit with a 40-year jail term would be "too hard."

"I'm not prepared to come to Australia because it would be too hard on my family," he said, breaking down in tears on the phone.
