AFTER enduring 19 years of shoplifting, Dallas Mackay of the Gray Supermarket has had enough and said it was time thieves(BOONGS) were made to compensate shopkeepers for pilfering.

Mr Mackay's call for action follows a raid on his shop on Saturday night involving seven people who stole liquor.

After being pursued by staff who retrieved some of the stolen alcohol, gang members returned to the shop, smashed the glass front door and assaulted a staff member.

"People who steal have to be held accountable and made to pay back the value of what they took," Mr Mackay said yesterday.

"Shoplifters have to be taken seriously," he said.


The Gray Supermarket is a family business and yesterday Mr Mackay, 31, and his father Lyle were still dealing with the latest bout of shoplifting and the angry response from the thieves.

Mr Mackay yesterday examined the shop's CCTV footage to prepare a package for the Palmerston Police.

After dealing with shoplifting for almost 20 years the Mackays now have 14 CCTV cameras protecting their business.

And because so many thieves have tried to walk, or run, out of the store carrying "bulk" items the Mackays had to change the shop's exit to a "raceway" so all customers pass the check-out.

"On Saturday they've come in as a group and sussed out the supermarket and where people were inside it and spread right out to try their luck at stealing alcohol," Mr Mackay said.

"As soon as the check-out staff and other members in the store fronted the thieves they were threatened.

"One of the staff was told that if he said anything, he'd get his head punched in.

"Once the guys came back into the store with the stolen liquor, they'd have thought it was all over.

"But shortly after two men entered with a lot of aggression, smashing my front door and then got in the face of one of the staff members, shouldering him and then the next guy assaulted the staff member.

Mr Mackay said it took Police about 45 minutes to respond to the incident.

AN ALLEGED violent offender BLOODY BOONG quite literally dropped into "Darwin Magistrates Court yesterday when he made an unsuccessful bid for freedom. 
 
The man started out in the dock but then allegedly climbed his way into the roof cavity when he was refused bail. A woman who wanted only to be known as Anabell was sitting in the courtroom when the incident occurred.

Anabell told the NT News the man scaled the glass enclosure surrounding the dock when magistrate Michael Carey remanded him in custody.

"He didn't like what the judge told him so he jumped up on to the glass and climbed through the roof,'' she said.

"It was a bit scary."


Anabell said he then fell through the roof near the entrance to the courtroom.

"They arrested him and took him back to jail,'' she said.

"The whole building was in lockdown."

Court proceedings soon resumed, but parts of the roof remained strewn across the floor and footprints could still be seen dented across the ceiling.

NOTORIOUS juvenile offender Ezra Austral is back behind bars just four days after he posted a self-recorded rap song online, in which he sings about criminal activity including dealing drugs and carrying guns.

The 17-year-old has now been charged with car theft, among other charges, while a 20-year old alleged accomplice was charged with drug possession.

In the song, Austral refers to himself as "Notorious Cornwallis".

He boasts about criminal escapades in Palmerston, despite having been required to live on Melville Island for the past five months as part of his suspended sentence.

"I don't give a fuck when I'm on the block, always got a Glock strapped down my jocks, motherfuckers talk shit, you will get shot," he sings.


Austral has regularly posted pictures of himself online carrying high-powered rifles, smoking what appears to be cannabis, and brandishing knives in front of court.

But it seems he now has a new drug of choice, singing that he has been "slinging crystal meth and shit through the streets of Palmerston."

"That's the way I fucking roll, when you try to mess with me ... racked off my head on crystal meth," he sings.

In the rap Austral claims he could make up to $5000 per day selling crystal meth, while making fun of those who earn only $900 per fortnight working.

At one point, he refers to the satellite city as if it is a violence and crime riddled third world country, "Palmer-stan".

When one of Austral's friends was killed in a high-speed car crash recently, Austral said that if he wasn't on the Tiwi Islands, he likely would have been killed.

"That would of been me if I didn't get out of Darwin," he said.

But in the song, he takes a different tune, boasting of being chased by police.

POLICE are searching for three teenagers allegedly involved in a 14-hour crime spree across Darwin today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said police want to speak with the youths in relation to a series of offences including criminal damage and threatening behaviour.

Their spree included a drive-off at a the Caltex service station in Eaton which was caught on CCTV (see above).

"They were last seen in scrub land bordered by Dick Ward Drive, Nemarluk Drive and Richardson Park," he said.

He said police were currently searching for three youths in Parap.


They are described as two indigenous males aged between 15 and 16 years old, both 177cm tall, slim build and short light brown hair.

One was last seen wearing a dark grey shirt.

The third is an indigenous girl aged between 14 and 15 with long blonde and brown hair.

Sen-Sgt Stringer asked anyone who may have seen the individuals to not approach them.




I just read the full article in the paper. Damn ! The petrol drive off is only a small part of what they did, they rammed gates of houses, threatened people with axes and baseball bats, driving like maniacs, vandalising property, burning out a car.

A HORSE was left bloodied and horrifically injured after an assailant attacked the animal with a metal object.

The ferocity of the attack left Macca, a 20-year-old gelding, with a gash on his muzzle so deep it cut to the bone.

Police are investigating the incident as an act of animal cruelty.

Macca was donated to charity Riding for the Disabled at Catalina Rd, Marlow Lagoon last week.

The charity's centre manager Lesley Monro said Macca was treated by a vet and was recovering from his injuries.


She said the horses became restless around 3am.

"The horses were calling. When they are under stress or pressure or can't see they call. We got up and went outside. They were running around but we couldn't see anything," she said.

Yesterday morning Ms Monro couldn't find Macca in the stable.

"He was down in the bushes. We couldn't find him when we got here this morning and he was among all the trees looking very forlorn.

"I couldn't believe it. We walked him back and called the vet straight away."

She said it was the 11th time the centre had been the target of thieves and vandals in the past year.

Ms Monro said thieves targeted the centre twice in the days leading up to the attack on Macca. She said earlier in the year two cars and a television were stolen.

Ms Monro and her partner Ian have operated Riding for the Disabled to 15 years.

She said the horses brought joy to around 120 children with disabilities each week.

Territory police Superintendent Daniel Shean said Macca's injury was consistent with being hit by an object.

"The horse was recently donated to the riding school which caters for people with disabilities to participate in equine related activities in a safe environment," he said.

"It is disappointing to think a person could deliberately injure a horse in such a way and I urge anyone who can assist in this matter to contact police."

A MAN and a teenager accused of robbing a taxi driver while armed with baseball bats are facing a string of charges over a week-long crime spree in Darwin.

The 22-year-old and 17-year-old are accused of a break-in, aggravated assault, stealing, crashing a car and arson around Nightcliff in Darwin's northern suburbs between October 10 and 16.

They were also believed to have been involved in a service station drive-off during the spree which was caught on CCTV.

The man will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court today and the teenager in the Darwin Youth Justice Court on Friday.
