THE streets of Alice Springs – a town that was once dubbed the stabbing capital of the world – can be quite a daunting place at the best of times. During the day, things appear calm. But at night, things start to unravel. 
 
It's not unusual to hear the sound of screams and sirens piercing the air. It is commonplace to see mobs of children wandering the CBD unsupervised, and at times, causing havoc. Most like to paint these latchkey kids as the town's antagonists. It's easy to do.

But they aren't one-dimensional villains prowling the street looking for trouble.

There is no question that there are serious youth problems that need to be addressed in the Territory. No one is debating that. But as anybody who has been here for more than a few years can tell you, these are not new issues.

An article from the NT News in April 1995 reported that a meeting of Aboriginal leaders in Alice Springs revealed kids were turning to crime and substance abuse.

So this didn't just pop up.

It means there has been at least 20 years of government policies that have failed to address and fix these issues. Every year there's new programs, taskforces, and political agendas with little to no effect.

Labor like to attack the CLP for cutting funding to youth initiatives despite the "Summer of Crime" of 2011 that occurred under their generous payouts.

Then-assistant Commissioner Mark Payne assured the people of Alice Springs they would not have to suffer another summer of crime. He said there would be 32 dedicated officers – or one might say, a taskforce – to carry out the operation.

Four years later and youths are now responsible for two-thirds of all property crime across the NT.

This week, in reaction to those figures from the "Summer of Crime" of 2015, the now-Deputy Commissioner Payne announced a new taskforce combining police and seven government agencies to tackle youth crime. Deja vu, much?



On Monday night, a group of more than 50 youths threw rocks at police officers and passing vehicles.

There were no injuries, but in a typical knee-jerk reaction, the Northern Territory Government announced children who continued to throw rocks would be taken into their care.

North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) hit back, claiming Alice Springs youth workers had reported that a majority of the kids that had been apprehended for rock-throwing were already in the Territory's care.

But of course, the Department of Children and Families quickly denied their claim.

It is not the first time the CLP has threatened to remove children from their parents since coming into power. In 2013, Chief Minister Adam Giles said accusations of creating a new Stolen Generation would not stop him removing neglected children from parents and placing them in care.

At that time there were already 618 Aboriginal children in the Territory's care.

By June 2014, 85 per cent of all the children in care were Aboriginal. For reference, that's 787 indigenous children and 130 non-indigenous children.

The majority of these were in foster homes as the Department of Children and Families struggle to place kids into kinship homes due to stringent screening processes.



Some say it's a good thing these kids have been "rescued" and put into safe homes. But if we have learnt anything from the past, it's that it's probably not true.

Earlier this year, a girl barely in her teens fell pregnant to an older man while in care.

Another teenage girl in care was allowed to regularly leave and was eventually raped.

We only have to look at the tragic stories that came out about the old Retta Dixon Home at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to see being put in care is not always a safe haven.

Instead of putting the problems in the "too hard basket" and saying we better start removing children from families, can we start to look at the root of the problem and ask why?(* the government treats them as our equal and gives their folks a baby bonus to breed and then has no interest in caring for them*)

Why are the kids taking to the streets at night? Where are their caring parents and families? We need to start acknowledging the fact that young Aboriginal people outnumber their elders. In 2011, more than a third of indigenous people in the NT were under 15. Only 4 per cent were over 65.

The fundamental blocks of Aboriginal culture is learning from elders so what happens when they're no longer there? It's just not as simple as pointing our fingers at parents.* well how about doing something to cull them, can't polish a turd*)

We all seem more preoccupied with what trouble the kids are going to cause instead of what might happen to them. It's just not safe for them out there. Like in 2011, when it was revealed young girls wandering the streets of Alice were being used as child prostitutes. Or the boy who recently died after inhaling deodorant.(* so it is white's fault?*)

These kids deserve as much of a chance as the rest of us.(* they get given more chances than anybody! :- easy access to apprenticeships, better study grants, so is it our fault or theirs?*)

Instead of demonising and threatening to remove troubled Aboriginal children from their families, how about we actually help them for once.

And unfortunately for you, that doesn't mean taking them away, sticking them in a home and pretending everything is all right. Because that hasn't worked over the past 200 years and it won't work now.(* No! how about giving them the snip?! How about setting up a fertiliser factory in Alice?*)

A 23-YEAR-OLD woman has been charged by police after allegedly smacking another woman over the head with a bottle and stabbing her in the face with the broken glass. 
 
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Akers said the offender approached a 47-year-old woman at John Stokes Square near Coles Express in Nightcliff early Sunday morning.

"Police allege the offender stabbed the victim in the face and fled the scene but was arrested by Police a short time late," Serg Akers said.

"The victim was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital to receive treatment for her injuries and remains in a stable condition.

"The 23-year-old woman was charged with unlawfully cause serious harm."

She will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court today.

On Sunday, Duty Superintendent Brendan Muldoon said the victim managed to make her way to the Coles Express where she was assisted by passers-by who called an ambulance and police.

"The victim was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with serious facial injuries.

"It's yet to be determined what's happening with the eye.

"The information we had last night was that they didn't hold high hopes that her eye would survive the incident.

"Fingers and toes crossed it's not that serious."

Supt Muldoon said it was unclear if the alleged offender and the victim were known to each other prior to the incident.

"It's not yet known what the circumstances were leading up to the incident because there hasn't been a chance to speak to the victim post surgery," he said.

"But they weren't related."

The alleged offender was located by police in the John Stokes Square area about an hour after the attack.

St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said the victim's injuries were non-life threatening.

"It's difficult to say how serious the injury was because there was a lot of blood," Mr Garraway said.

"She has a penetrating eye injury but is in a stable condition."


The area where the crime occurred is a known hang out for Abo bums. You can bet a pair of them had a fight. You can bet a boong was involved.

THE youngest of three boys*Young coon crooks* who assaulted a man outside Casuarina Square which led to his death has been sentenced – but is already eligible for ­parole. 
 
Jeffrey Bruce Ahwon, 18, had been in custody since his arrest on November 19, 2013, following the incident where Rick Dermody, 39, was bashed to death.

He received a full sentence of four years and 10 months, with a non-parole period of one year and five months.

Having served one year, five months and five days to yesterday, it meant Ahwon would remain in custody but could apply for his release.

Justice Judith Kelly said in the NT Supreme Court that options for Ahwon's integration back into society were limited.

"You're not as fortunate as the other offenders to have continued strong support of family in Darwin," she said.

"It's not desirable to put you on a suspended sentence.

"You said you wanted to better yourself and do an apprenticeship ... I really hope that can be done."

Ahwon was 16 when he assaulted Dermody in October 2013, kicking and punching the victim to the head and chest.

The violence sprung from racist slurs by Dermody two days before, also outside ­Casuarina Square.

"Your charge was the most serious of the three offenders – engaging in conduct involving a violent act causing death," Justice Kelly said.

"There is only one case, as this is a fairly new charge, where a person has been convicted. Yours was worse than that – greater, more sustained, and acted in company – but you are younger."

So this, white guy, Rick Dermody  was killed in manslaughter by some, pesky, wreckless, coon, crooks! the abbos called him a "racist" and he is basicly on the loose in no time for this horrid crime!

TWO men have been charged after they allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in Borroloola on Tuesday. 
 
The two men, aged 16 and 18, have been remanded in custody charged with sexual intercourse without consent, aggravated assault and stealing.

The charges are in relation to the alleged sexual assault of a 32-year-old woman who was approached by two men while jogging along Searcy St about 6am on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Constable Luke Dalgleish said the men allegedly pulled the woman into nearby bushes and sexually assaulted her.

"Borroloola Police have been working closely with the community throughout this incident, to provide awareness and to gain information," he said.

He said two people are assisting police with their investigations.

The two men will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court and the Youth Justice Court on May 5.

Given the nature of the town where it happened you can say the crimes had "Boong" written all over them!

THE Territory Government has been accused of adopting a "jackboot" approach towards residents in Alice Springs town camps. (COONS)
 
It's claimed police doorknocked town camp houses following recent comments about rock-throwing in Alice by Chief Minister Adam Giles and Children and Families Minister John Elferink.

Tangentyere Council chief executive Walter Shaw said the visits were "heavy-handed and punitive" and were part of a Government strategy to paint town camp residents as ­responsible for the recent outbreak of rock-throwing and other anti-social behaviour.

But police have defended their approach, saying there had been a dramatic downturn in violent offences as a result of the Government's community engagement strategy. Assistant Commissioner Jamie Chalker said police visits to town camps had also seen an improvement in school attendance among children living in town camps.

Mr Shaw accused police and Government officials of ­arriving in town camps unannounced, "knocking on doors and questioning people in their homes".

"At the same time the Chief Minister and the Minister for Children and Families were threatening that children would be removed from their families for throwing rocks."

Residents want the introduction of whole-of-camp ­trespass orders and a reduction in the maximum time visitors can stay in town camps ­reduced from six weeks to two weeks. Accommodation in town camps is controlled by Territory Housing.
