In New York, 40,000 People Show Support for Israel in Manhattan Parade

Some 40,000 people from over 250 organizations took part in a parade along Manhattan's Fifth Avenue on Sunday to show their support for Israel. The "Celebrate Israel" parade was held under the banner of "Celebrate Israel All Together." The parade also recognized 50 years of the reunification of Jerusalem. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and Senator Charles Schumer marched in the parade. Some 30 floats and eleven marching bands took part of the parade. Nine members of Israel's Parliament, including Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, also participated in the parade, as well as Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

Extract: At least 53 Congressional representatives are on a week-long trip to Israel, paid for by  the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF), an arm of the powerful lobbying group AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). AIEF's budget is approximately $80 million, which it uses to take diverse groups to Israel. More than a dozen Latino leaders from the Southwest U.S. have just returned from an AIEF funded five-day trip to Israel that ended August 6, and a trip for top political operatives was conducted in June .... Both the Democratic House leader and the Republican leader refused to divulge the names of the Congressional representatives on the trip. Majority Leader's office suggested we get the names from AIPAC. AIPAC, however, also refused to release them. So far, national media have ignored the trip.

Dozens of US Air Force soldiers will call home the new base, located inside the Israeli Air Force's Mashabim Air Base, west of the towns of Dimona and Yerucham. Brig. Gen. Tzvika Haimovitch, head of the IAF's Aerial Defense Command, announced the establishment of the installation on Monday evening. "It's nothing short of historic," he said. It demonstrates the "years-old alliance between the United States and the State of Israel." The Israeli brigadier general also told reporters the establishment of a permanent US base in Israel "allows us to improve our defense, in discovery and in interception and in preparedness."
