More Aboriginal People Often Means an Influx in Crime

DRUNKEN anti-social behaviour is rife in Katherine, according to Mayor Fay Miller.

Ms Miller said in the Wet, people travelled to Katherine from remote and regional communities near the town – which often caused an influx in crime.

"This year the behaviour has been particularly bad," she said. "It's become noticeable in the past two or three weeks – it seems that it's alcohol-related." Ms Miller is calling for a stronger police presence and more support for Katherine.

Her sentiments are echoed by NT Police Association president Paul McCue.

"Katherine has had similar policing numbers for some time – they could do with an increase," he said. "Our police do a great job, they can only do what they can do with the resources they have."

According to NT Police statistics, released on Friday, there was a 41.9 per cent increase in house break-ins in Katherine in 12 months. Commander Matthew Hollamby said Katherine experienced intermittent spikes in property crime.

He acknowledged there was an increase in assault rates.

Commander Hollamby said assaults rates were marginally higher than last year, but were still significantly lower than in previous years.

"The involvement of alcohol and domestic violence continue to be dominant factors in violent crime," he said. "NT Police continue to place significant emphasis on domestic violence, in particular the children of offenders and victims with a view to preventing repeat victimisation."


Mr McCue was concerned about the spike in alcohol-related assaults across the Territory. "In terms of assaults and alcohol-related assaults – in Alice Springs, Katherine, Darwin – there's been a significant increase in that area across the board," he said.

"That's a concern to us – it highlights the need for a stronger alcohol policy."

Mr McCue said the NT Government "urgently" needed to take up recommendations made in the recent NT alcohol review.

In the past 12 months, Darwin had an 11.4 per cent spike in alcohol-related assaults.

There was also a 20.6 per cent increase in property crime compared to this time last year – but property crime rates were steadily decreasing each month. "Darwin has now posted the lowest monthly property crime rates in two years," Commander James O'Brien SC said.

ICE-addicted Afghan-Australian Saeed Noori has deliberately mowed 17 pedestrians down in the CBD in an "act of evil".

A second man arrested at the scene, who was allegedly filming the attack and was in possession of knives, was released overnight and is expected to be charged on summons with drugs and weapons possessions.

A new teen gang *African mud gang*terrorising the western suburbs has been blamed for this morning's shocking party brawl where police were attacked.

It's been revealed the Werribee house had been rented on Airbnb by a group of 17-year-old girls who were in town for a local basketball carnival.

The gang, who call themselves 'Menace To Society', gatecrashed the house, with as many as 40 youths ambushing the Attunga Grove property.

It's alleged one of the girls was assaulted, at which point police were called.

That's when the situation escalated, with the gang trashing the house and wild behaviour spilling out into the street.

When police arrived they were pelted with rocks.

One officer was injured, and the critical incident squad was called in.

"It's amazing," Pat told 3AW's Tony Jones from the scene. "There's holes in the walls, there's furniture turned upside down, windows smashed, they've really trashed the joint."

Police say the gang is also responsible for similar incidents at Altona, Williams Landing and Docklands.

Amanda, who lives opposite the house, told 3AW's Tony Jones it wasn't the first party — "the previous night they also had a party that went until about 4.30am in the morning," she said.

"It just happened really quickly," she said of the violence.

"The street was lined with riot police.

"The young men just kept coming back for more — as soon as police got the street quiet, they kept coming back for more.

"I have a three-year-old and I'm currently six months pregnant so it was quite full-on for me."

In a statement, Airbnb said the renters have been banned, and the hosts are being supported.

"I saw the aftermath. It looked like a war zone," he said.

Werribee father Jeremy got a call from his daughter who was home alone as the riot broke out.

He arrived just after a rock was thrown through the window, so he grabbed his baseball bat to protect his daughter.

THE Prime Minister is being urged to fund 80 new AFP officers to smash the gangs terrorising �Melbourne's suburbs.

Federal Liberal MP and former police officer Jason Wood, who has served in Victoria's counter-�terror and organised crime squads, will push for Malcolm Turnbull's support to �urgently establish two joint crime-fighting taskforces in light of a fresh wave of violence and intimidation.

It comes after the Herald Sun on Friday reported how gangs of youths of mostly African origin — including the emerging Menace to Society — have turned Tarneit's Ecoville community park into a no-go zone.

The thugs, some as young as 10, �repeatedly smash up what was once a family-friendly meeting spot.

Under Mr Wood's plan, 40 Australian Federal Police would aim at gang trouble spots in Melbourne's west, and another 40 in the outer southeast.

The La Trobe MP had floated a plan for a total of 50 AFP members to hit the streets, but is taking his �upgraded proposal to Mr Turnbull as a matter of urgency.

"The time where we say this is a �policing issue or a state government issue has passed — enough is enough," Mr Wood told the Herald Sun.

"The PM needs to ensure the resources are made available to (Home Affairs Minister) Peter Dutton.

"We must end the violence, which is taking a huge toll on communities across Melbourne," Mr Wood said.

"We as a federal government have control of the visas, we have the tactical resources, and our job is to keep the communities safe.

"We need to take action �before this violence and intimidation spreads even further."


The head of Victorias police union and the states Victims of Crime Commissioner have lashed lenient sentences handed out by the states courts, as it emerges most African youths sentenced for violent crimes in the past year were given average or below average punishments.
