MORE children are being locked in the Don Dale Detention Centre's high security unit now than at any time in the past year. The Department of Territory Families has revealed there were 13 male detainees held in the notorious unit as of last week.
That number represented almost half of the male detainees held at the centre, with 10 in medium security and six in the low security section.

Another five female detainees were being held at Don Dale, however the department did not give a breakdown of which sections they were being held in.
Territory Families provided the numbers to Sky News after the Royal Commission into Child Protection and Detention was told the HSU was now "full".
Speaking at a NAIDOC Week rally in Darwin last Friday, Darwin barrister John Lawrence said it was a "f***ing outrage" that children were still being held in the HSU, which used to be the maximum security unit at the old Berrimah adult prison.
"This is a place where we used to keep our worst serial killers and paedophiles and we're using it to hold kids," he said.


When Sky News toured Don Dale last August in the wake of the Four Corners report into youth detention, just two children were being kept in the HSU.
Corrections sources said staff had been making a conscious effort to avoid putting children in the unit under former Superintendent Victor Williams.

Royal Commissioners Margaret White and Mick Gooda raised concerns about the unit with Mr Williams during a visit to Don Dale last December.
But Mr Williams was sacked and staff were ordered to adhere strictly to classification guidelines following the escape of detainees Josiah Binsaris and Trey Mawson in April.

THE public has given a resounding tick of approval to the idea of a youth curfew in the Territory.

More than 90 per cent of people who participated in an NT News poll believed there should be a curfew introduced to stop trouble on NT streets.

The call for a curfew came from CLP opposition leader Gary Higgins after 50 vehicles were vandalised at an Alice Springs car dealer last week.

He claimed the Labor Government had been "too slow to respond to soaring crime" earlier this year.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 1000 people had voted in the poll on the NT News's website, with just eight per cent believing a curfew should not be imposed.

People also took to social media to voice their opinions, from offering ideas to laughing off the suggestion.

Tracey Albano said something had to be done to stop rising youth crime.

"Maybe a night patrol service like the old booze patrol that picks them up and takes them home. And if they're picked up x amount of times, family services and even Centrelink are notified (if parents are on benefits) the accountability needs to start," she said.

"The police shouldn't be doing it as part of their job, they have enough to do. Or assign one police person/liaison to a patrol service that enforces the curfew."

Mr Higgins said a curfew would be a useful tool in the fight against youth crime in the Territory.


He said the NT's crime rate is higher than acceptable, and the NT Government needs to do more to protect the community.


He is disappointed the Gunner Government isn't willing to consider the curfew proposal, which he said had seen success in other states and territories.


But Chief Minister Michael Gunner insists curfews don't work.


"A curfew will be a false solution," he said. "There is no evidence to show that a curfew would work.


"Police have to be able to do their job in a full 24-hour cycle. There are times youth are probably going to be doing the wrong thing at noon, and that's as bad as it is at midnight."


Mr Gunner said although he was unwilling to consider a curfew, something does need to be done to tackle youth crime rates across the Territory.


"We are concerned about youth crime, we've seen the stats that show it is growing, and unfortunately (offenders are) getting younger — we have to have an intervention, we have to break the cycle," he said.


"One of my concerns about a curfew is that school hours are as important as after hours — (and) a curfew would stop things like a midnight basketball program ... (or) your kids might get in trouble for going to the late session at the movies.


"Say you pick 10pm as the magic number, that doesn't mean that kids on the streets at 9.30pm are actually doing the right thing either."


When the curfew was rolled out in Perth, youngsters attending a late-night movie session in the entertainment precinct had to be picked up by an adult from inside the theatre — they could not even wait on the street outside for their parents.




The NT cops all quit. They can't do a whole lot because the Abos always get away with stuff. If you locked the kid up and the parent too,the UN would come and say that Abos are too over represented in Gaol.

A FEW weeks ago, the Territory Opposition made a simple suggestion, which was that the Labor Government consider legislation that would provide police with the ability to enforce curfews during times and in locations where youth crime reaches crisis point.

The Chief Minister flatly refused to do so, despite the fact more than 90 per cent of Territorians who responded to an NT News poll on curfews agreed it should be "on the table" as a tool for cutting youth crime.

My call for a curfew followed the release of shocking vision of a large group of children as young as eight years old vandalising more than 50 cars at Peter Kittle's dealership in Alice Springs.

The incident occurred at 3.30 on a Wednesday morning, in the heart of Alice Springs CBD, just metres from Anzac Hill. It was astonishing to me – and many others who saw this vision – that a group of eight to 10 children would be allowed to roam the streets unsupervised at 3.30am, much less be allowed to spend up to half an hour destroying vehicles that support the jobs and livelihoods of so many.

Of course, this is not an isolated incident, particularly in Alice Springs.

As anyone who lives in Alice Springs or visits there regularly (as I do) knows, crime is such a problem that residents are afraid to leave their homes after dark.

They fear they or their children will be attacked or their lives will be put in danger due to rock-throwing youths or some other violent act.

The crime statistics in the Territory since the Labor Government came to power are truly appalling, and the problems are not limited to Alice Springs.
Over the past year, commercial break-ins in Darwin are up 74.1 per cent and house break-ins have increased 53.3 per cent.

Palmerston has seen a 64.7 per cent jump in house break-ins and a 35 per cent surge in alcohol-related assault.

Katherine is in crisis, with an 81 per cent spike in house break-ins and a 56 per cent rise in sexual assaults.

Tennant Creek has recorded a 425 per cent increase in sexual assaults in the past year.

When I talk to Territorians, the number one concern on people's minds is the impact crime is having on their families, businesses and quality of life.
The Labor Government spends a great deal of time reassuring Territorians with words to the effect that "every Territorian has the right to live in safe and vibrant communities and to ensure their homes and business are secure", but we have seen very little real, concrete action to prevent crime or hold criminals to account.

The Labor Government told us that electronic monitoring for youth placed on Police bail would help reduce crime, but despite passing legislation on urgency in March, to my knowledge not a single youth offender has been fitted with a bracelet under the new legislation.

Similarly, they have spent millions on Youth Outreach Officers, yet they haven't figured out their role and can't even properly screen them – as one was caught driving under the influence of ice, while on a 12-month suspended sentence for a previous offence.

Since last year, Deputy Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro and I have repeatedly called on the Labor Government to implement constructive solutions to the crime crisis we are experiencing.

TWO police officers were forced to abandon their police car and run to safety after an angry *boong*mob turned on them at a town camp in Alice Springs.

The officers were called to a domestic violence incident in the Larapinta town camp on Tuesday evening when a group of 15 people began throwing rocks at them.

A rock hit one officer in the knee, while a rock narrowly missed striking the second officer in the face.

An assailant also swung a tyre iron at one of the officers.

A NEW wave of police attacks has triggered renewed calls for cop bashers to face mandatory jail time.

The hardline calls by NT Police Association president Paul McCue follow a terrifying attack, in which an armed gang allegedly confronted officers on Tuesday at a town camp near Alice Springs.

NT Criminals Lawyers Association president Russell Goldflam said the association did not support mandatory sentencing.

"Every case is different. And judges ... their job is to decide what punishment fits the crime," he said.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said strong penalties were already in place.

"Anyone that is stupid enough to throw a punch or a rock at a copper is not thinking about what that consequence is and obviously that is as about as dumb a thing as you can do," he said.

You see the "do-gooders" don't like mandatory sentencing of Abos because they feel their high numbers are over represented in prison and therefore can't  breed  for the future. Wish they'd think about White preservation in the same way.
