A MOTHER whose son was brutally bashed by a gang of youths on Main South Rd has called on other parents and community leaders to attend an urgent meeting to curb violence in the area

Ms Farrell said there needed to be different ways to educate children, which also included Aboriginal elders working with young people.


"These kids, and it has been proven time and time again, have no respect for the uniform," she said.

"We need to come in at different angles and get the respect, and that has to be from the elders."

Mr Stevens said police were aware of the parties that occur in the area, but were not sure if they were "prevalent" enough to raise public concern.

The meeting is at Neporendi Aboriginal Forum, 7 Vine St, Old Reynella, on Thursday, April 5, from 7pm-8.30pm.

Between 1:30am and 2am Tuesday, a Mitchell St venue was reported to have been unlawfully entered, with the alleged offenders gaining entry by smashing a front window with a rock.

CCTV footage from the venue captured two Aboriginal males who made off with several bottles of alcohol.

SA POLICE have organised a meeting to address growing community concerns about a spate of crime and unsafe parties — where youth congregate then spill on to the streets when they are shut down — in Adelaide's south.

It comes despite Police Commissioner Grant Stevens last week telling the Southern Times Messenger these parties were not "prevalent" enough to raise the public concern.

"I wouldn't suggest there are any trends that (show) we have an epidemic of out of control parties," Mr Stevens said.

The meeting is at Port Noarlunga Arts Centre, Gawler St, Port Noarlunga, on Monday, April 16, 6.30pm-9pm.

It follows local residents' concerns about youth gang violence — where innocent people have been assaulted on the streets — after these parties have been shut down.

Aboriginal elders needed to educate offenders to get the message across.

"These kids, and it has been proven time and time again, have no respect for the uniform," Ms Farrell said.

"We need to come in at different angles and get the respect, and that has to be from the elders ... I know they are furious.

"Crime is getting worse and worse because (gangs) are getting bigger and bigger.

"People are scared even locking themselves in their homes, things are getting damaged and people are getting hurt.

"This is all about fixing the issue with a bunch of drunken youth that have gotten the neighbourhood scared — so let's change this."

Council of Aboriginal Elders of SA executive officer Garth Dodd said his members needed to work with young offenders to "keep the streets safe".

Mr Dodd, who said it was important not to stereotype all Aboriginal youth as criminals, said elders had to work cooperatively with concerned residents, youth and community leaders.

"We need to get the elders in to talk to these families, ask them what is needed here — how can they help in any way possible," Mr Dodd said.

The forum will be attended by senior police from the region and officers from the South Australia Police Licensing Enforcement Branch.

MORE than 150 concerned locals packed out Port Noarlunga's Arts Centre to help find ways to put an end to the escalating violence in Adelaide's south.

The people - who say they feel like prisoners in their own home and fear using some roads - attended the Police and Community Engagement forum last night, addressing issues including out-of-control parties, youth violence, the state's ice problem, re-engaging youth and rock throwing on the Southern Expressway.

Among the community's concerns were underage drinking and youth congregating at parties then spilling on to the streets when they are shut down.

At least two people walked out of the forum, one woman who left saying she had "no faith in the justice system".

The forum came after Port Noarlunga mother Nanette Farrell – whose son was brutally bashed by a gang of youths – called an urgent meeting to curb violence following a spate of incidents in the area.

Local MPs, Ms Farrell, as well as representatives from the Sammy D Foundation, Onkaparinga Council and Aboriginal elders all attended the event.

Neil Davis, from the Sammy D Foundation, said it was time to make a change.

"We are not going to change this overnight," Mr Davis said.

"We need educate the kids of today so they can educate their youth as well.

"It is about us working together to come up with answers to our problems."

So the Abo elders want their kids educated?they aren't exactly model parents! This current crop gets knocked up for a government funded baby bonus! Just what we need when we have Prison at 100% capacity and no funds to make more!

They live in one of the NT's 43 town camps, which according to a recent review — are mostly over 20 years old. Age, plus tenant neglect and a lack of proper maintenance means 18 per cent of NT town camp homes are in poor condition — or worse.

According to the NT Town Camps Review, released yesterday, the total cost to bring all houses up to the standards of the Residential Tenancy Act is over $77 million. That's unacceptable.

It's unacceptable that this report is only now being publicly released, more than two years after the Parliamentary Inquiry into Housing in Aboriginal Town Camps was established.

In difficult financial times, the NT Government has promised $25 million to address these issues — $24 million for urgent repairs, and $1 million to fund a five-person team to make sure our town camps are running efficiently and effectively.

But realistically, how can a five-person team make sure the recommendations in a 16,000-page report are implemented correctly across 43 town camps? How can they improve employment outcomes for residents? Tackle serious social issues such as alcohol and substance abuse?

Without significant resources from the Federal Government it appears this $24 million will be a stop-gap and it seems inevitable that in the years to come the houses will just deteriorate and another cash injection will be required.

It's clear we are treating the symptom rather than finding the cure. The cure is fixing the anti-social problems and the disadvantage that runs rife through many areas of the Territory.

How do you fix all this ? Find the Abos jobs, take their royalty money off individual traditional owners and give it all back to Centrelink. Abolish baby bonus for Abos. Get tough with sentencing. Instead of giving them free houses, put more money into Gaols if they are going to breed in big numbers to get baby bonus. You can only try so much , lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. They are just unevolved people!

I say re-establish a German style mission where they actually worked and were schooled in useful stuff!
