A NEW wave of police attacks has triggered renewed calls for cop bashers to face mandatory jail time.

The hardline calls by NT Police Association president Paul McCue follow a terrifying attack, in which an armed gang allegedly confronted officers on Tuesday at a town camp near Alice Springs.

NT Criminals Lawyers Association president Russell Goldflam said the association did not support mandatory sentencing.

"Every case is different. And judges ... their job is to decide what punishment fits the crime," he said.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said strong penalties were already in place.

"Anyone that is stupid enough to throw a punch or a rock at a copper is not thinking about what that consequence is and obviously that is as about as dumb a thing as you can do," he said.

You see the "do-gooders" don't like mandatory sentencing of Abos because they feel their high numbers are over represented in prison and therefore can't  breed  for the future. Wish they'd think about White preservation in the same way.

A POLICEWOMAN had chunks of hair torn from her scalp during a vicious attack in Alice Springs, just days after a rock-throwing mob turned on a police patrol on the town's outskirts.

The latest alleged assault comes amid repeated calls for mandatory jail time for attacks on police.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Danny Bacon said police were speaking to a driver when the two alleged attackers moved towards them, one yelling loudly, shortly after 2am on Saturday.

"She was directed to move away, before she smashed a bottle of alcohol," he said.

The police officer's injuries came during a struggle to arrest the women.

"While being arrested, the women allegedly grabbed the female officer, dropping her to the ground. During a struggle, the officer has received head and facial injuries."

The NT News understands the officer's injuries included hair torn from her scalp and deep fingernail scratches to her face.

She was taken to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment.

KATHERINE police fought through the flames of a thick grass fire last year in a vain attempt to save an unconscious man burnt alive by his drunken relative.

Wayne Bidingal, 34, has pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter in the Supreme Court after setting fire to a patch of grass behind the United Service Station in Katherine on the night of October 12 last year, having earlier bickered with his victim over stolen grog.

Bidingal's victim, who the NT News has chosen not to name for cultural reasons, was one of two drinkers passed out in the grass.

The other, Graham Ashley, woke as the flames came near.

Bidingal also pleaded guilty to causing harm to Mr Ashley, who suffered minor burns.

The court heard Bidingal, of Gapuwiyak, had purchased two cartons of VB around lunchtime that day and spent the afternoon drinking on the outskirts of town, at one point becoming worked up after suspecting others of stealing his drinks.

That night, as the victim and Ashley lay sleeping in the patch of tall grass in town, a drunk Bidingal was heard saying "f*** off my grog, I'm going to burn this grass".

A fire Bidingal lit quickly grew out of control, and he briefly tried to stamp it out before walking away.

When police caught up to Bidingal, he was again drinking beer and denied lighting the fire. A post-mortem revealed the victim had a blood alcohol reading of 0.32.
