Extract: Two men have been charged after they allegedly used a machete to attack a Gold Coast couple who tried to stop them stealing.

Thirty-four-year-old Michael Liddell and 35-year-old Ingrid Brown found the men outside their Coombabah property after they were woken by a noise about 2am on Saturday.

It is believed the men were attempting to steal items from neighbouring homes and construction sites but fled when they were challenged by the couple.

The two men then returned to the house about 3.50am and attacked the couple with a machete, striking Ms Brown in the face and Mr Liddell on his forearm.

A GROUP of youths smashed up more than 50 brand new cars at Peter Kittle's car dealership in Alice Springs.

The NT News understands children as young as eight were involved in the vandalism but so far only a single 14-year-old boy had been charged by police.

It is also understood the youths attempted to throw pavers through both car windows.

The incident was captured on CCTV and police want anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Acting Superintendent Peter Dash said a number of young offenders damaged the cars at 3.30am.

"Damage to the vehicles included smashed windscreens and windows, and panel damage," he said.

Rock throwing is a national sport for boongs! Video on the original looks like one is bouncing from bonnet to bonnet.

A POLICE officer has been stabbed in the stomach while attempting to arrest a man who threw a rock at a police car in Maningrida.

Two officers were taking a prisoner to the police Airwing plane at Maningrida Airport when a 19-year-old relative threw the rock.

Commander Matt Hollamby said the officer was stabbed when they tried to arrest the man at 2.35pm.

HARDENED teenage criminals are assaulting youth detention centre guards to fast-track their "rite of passage" to adult prison, leading to calls for radical measures to halt the alarming spiral of crime and violence.

Staff at Cavan Youth Training Centre say they also face the risk of suspension or losing their jobs as a result of false allegations, and feel powerless to speak plainly to the troubled inmates.

Guards have been subjected to a series of assaults by teenagers hellbent on reaching adult prison before they turn 18. Experts have told The Advertiser that confronting and intensive programs such as Operation Flinders — in which recidivist teenagers head bush to learn a life outside crime — must be expanded to slow the revolving door of incarceration.

Despite their youth, Mr Kitchin said most detainees had been forced to lie, steal and use violence to survive in a world of generational dysfunction that would be incomprehensible to most people.

"They are very aware of what happens to staff subject to investigation, and it can be very easy for a kid to try and set you up and make it look like you've done something wrong."

The spate of assaults and blatant defiance of authorities had forced staff to take extreme security measures, including the use of handcuffs when moving detainees between units or to education classes, and protective shields that would avoid injuries to youths or guards.

Aboriginal boys raised with no positive male role models and who had often suffered physical and sexual abuse and neglect, form more than half of youths in custody in SA.

While overall youth incarceration rates have fallen in the past five years, the number of Aboriginal children continued to grow.

MORE children are being locked in the Don Dale Detention Centre's high security unit now than at any time in the past year. The Department of Territory Families has revealed there were 13 male detainees held in the notorious unit as of last week.
That number represented almost half of the male detainees held at the centre, with 10 in medium security and six in the low security section.

Another five female detainees were being held at Don Dale, however the department did not give a breakdown of which sections they were being held in.
Territory Families provided the numbers to Sky News after the Royal Commission into Child Protection and Detention was told the HSU was now "full".
Speaking at a NAIDOC Week rally in Darwin last Friday, Darwin barrister John Lawrence said it was a "f***ing outrage" that children were still being held in the HSU, which used to be the maximum security unit at the old Berrimah adult prison.
"This is a place where we used to keep our worst serial killers and paedophiles and we're using it to hold kids," he said.


When Sky News toured Don Dale last August in the wake of the Four Corners report into youth detention, just two children were being kept in the HSU.
Corrections sources said staff had been making a conscious effort to avoid putting children in the unit under former Superintendent Victor Williams.

Royal Commissioners Margaret White and Mick Gooda raised concerns about the unit with Mr Williams during a visit to Don Dale last December.
But Mr Williams was sacked and staff were ordered to adhere strictly to classification guidelines following the escape of detainees Josiah Binsaris and Trey Mawson in April.
