As a social experiment, media analyst Mark Dice asks randomly selected people at a beach pier in southern California to sign a petition to keep the "Holocaust Beach Party" from being canceled due to budget cuts. The Holocaust, he explains, is a "favorite celebration of the Jewish people," a "Jewish festival," and a "Jewish holiday." He urges support for the "Holocaust celebration" and the "Holocaust reenactment." No one disputes what he says. Dice is surprised and frustrated by the ignorance of these ordinary Americans. Many Americans seem utterly unmoved by what politicians, educators and the media in the US has been telling them for years about the importance of "the Holocaust."

Jan Grabowski, a historian at the University of Ottawa, expects his upcoming book to be controversial in his native Poland. But if a proposed new law is approved by Poland's parliament this fall, as expected, Grabowski's book, which examines the role of Poland's police force in robbing and murdering Jews under the Nazis, may also get him sentenced to prison if he visits the country ... The government bill, prepared by the Ministry of Justice, would make it a criminal offense, punishable by up to three years in prison, for anyone to implicate Poland, or the Polish people, in the crimes of the German Third Reich.

A new study published Friday by the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam says despite decades of research there is no conclusive evidence the Jewish diarist and her family were betrayed to the Netherlands' German occupiers during the second world war, leading to their arrest and deportation.

Ronald Leopold, Executive Director of the Anne Frank House museum, said new research "illustrates that other scenarios should also be considered".

One possible theory is that the 4 August, 1944 raid that led to Anne's arrest could have been part of an investigation into illegal labor or falsified ration coupons at the canal-side house where she and other Jews hid for just over two years.

The new research points to two men who worked in the building on Amsterdam's Prinsengracht canal and dealt in illegal ration cards. They were arrested earlier in 1944 and subsequently released, Dutch records show.

Such arrests were reported to an investigation division based in The Hague and the report says that, "During their day-to-day activities, investigators from this department often came across Jews in hiding by chance."

Another possibility raised by the report is that the raid was part of an investigation into people being allowed to work to prevent them being called up as forced labor and sent to Germany.

"A company where people were working illegally and two sales representatives were arrested for dealing in ration coupons obviously ran the risk of attracting the attention of the authorities," the report says.

"The possibility of betrayal has of course not been entirely ruled out by this, nor has any relationship between the ration coupon fraud and the arrest been proven, ... Clearly, the last word about that fateful summer day in 1944 has not yet been said," it adds.

THE Nazis may have discovered Anne Frank's hiding place by accident — and not because the tragic teenager and her family were betrayed, as historians have long believed.

A new study conducted by Amsterdam's Anne Frank House Museum and reported by the Sunday Times of London found no evidence that Anne, and the seven other Jews who lived with her in hiding for two years, were denounced to German occupiers in 1944.

Instead, the Nazis may have been chasing down counterfeiters who were producing false ration coupons.

Two men who worked in the commercial building where the Frank family huddled in a secret annex — and who Anne wrote about in her now-famous diary — were arrested for dealing fake coupons on the black market, the study found.

"During their day-to-day activities, investigators ... often came across Jews in hiding by chance," wrote historian Gertjan Broek.

Broek found no proof of a connection between the arrests and the roundup of the Frank family on August 4, 1944, but also found no evidence of a denunciation that could have led the Germans to the movable bookcase in the building on the Prinsengracht canal.

Anne died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February 1945, two months before it was liberated by Allied forces, at the age of 15.

Her father Otto, the only family member to survive the camps, discovered her journal when he returned to their hiding place after the war.

Published in English as "The Diary of a Young Girl" in 1952, her heartbreaking account of her life in hiding was translated into 67 languages and turned Anne into an icon.

In the decades since World War II, researchers have never come to a consensus over how the Franks were discovered.
