DISCOUNT supermarket chain Aldi has pulled an Australia Day T-shirt and singlet from its stores amid claims on social media that designs featured on the garments were racist.

Aldi was on Wednesday criticised by a number of Twitter users for a range of promotional T-shirts with AUSTRALIA EST 1788 logos.

The T-shirts and singlets were scheduled to go on sale on this week in the lead up to January 26.

Twitter users slammed the design as racist and culturally insensitive to indigenous Australians, who inhabited the continent for thousands of years before Europeans arrived.

Australia Day T-shirt pulled by supermarket had been approved by the federal government.
Big W follows Aldi in removing 'Australia Est. 1788' T-shirts from Australia Day range.

:'( Boo-Hoo to coons! Australia is a European word Whites brought here. It wasn't called Australia prior to their arrival, so the coons couldn't be known as "Australian." Australia was "Australia" after White men arrived here. The coons called it "Gondwana" or some crap.

Abos didn't have a name of their own for Australia. Gondwana has simply been co-opted for them by useless do-gooders attempting to impose a unity of language and culture where there was none.

Gondwana (from Sanskrit gondavana, "Forest of the Gonds") is the name given to the more southerly of two supercontinents (the northern being Laurasia) which were part of the Pangaea supercontinent that existed from approximately 510 to 180 million years ago. Gondwana included most of the landmasses in today's Southern Hemisphere, including Antarctica, South America, Africa, Madagascar and the Australian continent, as well as the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent, which have now moved entirely into the Northern Hemisphere.

Australia

The name Australia derives from Terra Australis (from Latin, "South Land") and was first used and recommended by explorer, Matthew Flinders. Legends of Terra Australis Incognita date back to Roman times and before, although not based on any documented knowledge of the continent.

Terra Australis was only one of several Australian type names applied to what became Australia. Other names for the then hypothetical landmass have included Terra Australis Ignota, Terra Australis Incognita ("The unknown land of the South"), Terra Australis Nondum Cognita ("The Southern Land Not Yet Known") and La Australia del EspĂritu Santo (Spanish: "the southern land of the Holy Spirit").

Thanks  8)

I don't need to add the text SOUTH VICTORY DAY to the back, because you can do that when you order your shirts, Brother.  The software - Silverlight - for adding text and images is all built into Creativity Storefront :D

"UNWELCOMING" and "discriminatory" Australia Day T-shirts on sale in Darwin have disappointed the local multicultural community.

Two shirts - one made in Bangladesh and saying "This is Australia. We eat meat, drink beer, and speak f**king English", and another Aussie-made one saying "If you don't love it, leave" - are being offered as an "Australia Day special" sale for $16.50 each in Darwin's Smith St Mall.

The shop owner was out of the country at time of writing.

A staff member attempted to stop this photo being taken, but only because of "copyright" issues.

NT Multicultural Council program manager Ron Mitchell, when contacted by the Sunday Territorian, said: "I think it's being discriminatory and not welcoming and we've to be conscious of people's values.

"You really have to be accepting that people have different values in society."

Large nationwide supermarkets Aldi and BigW withdrew from sale similar branded T-shirts last week.

Mr Mitchell said he was disappointed such slogans may undo the work of multicultural groups in the Territory.

He said ethnic groups were working hard to present performance and cuisine event OzFusion on Australia Day which "is designed to counteract those widely held stereotypes".

"The message is: we're all in this together; we're not judging each other," he said.

"That's what I like about Darwin - we don't judge people; we give them a fair go.

"(The T-shirts) sound like a message narrow and not accepting of multicultural Australia. I don't think something like that is acceptable in Darwin, of all places."
