A full military style or spray painter mask would be even better. No matter whether you get a half face mask or full face, get plenty of filters.
The Chinese Virus isn't a gas and doesn't float in the air by itself. The virus rides on droplets of vapour - spit, snot and any other mucus people tend to sneeze, cough and ooze. A gas mask will protect you better than any surgical mask. The recommended surgical mask for nurses and such is the N95, which gives up to 95% protection. Gas masks give up to 95 to 99% protection. Only a complete NBC Suit - Nuclear, Biological Chemical Warfare Suit - gives 100% protection.
And don't forget the eye protection.
