AUSTRALIAN Federal Police are investigating an allegation of payment for preferences ahead of Saturday's federal election in the seat of Solomon.

Australia First candidate John Kearney lodged the complaint on June 15 after meeting One Territory Solomon candidate Mark Garner. Mr Garner is technically an independent as One Territory did not register as a political party in time for the federal election.

Mr Kearney alleges Mr Garner offered to pay $2000 for his corflutes and his $1000 nomination fee for him to preference One Territory and not campaign in the seat.

Mr Garner confirmed he had met and spoken to Mr Kearney but "completely denied" making any offers. Mr Garner also confirmed he was aware of an AFP investigation, but not the specifics of the allegations.

The AFP confirmed it has received a referral from a candidate in the seat of Solomon, NT, in relation to an alleged breach of the Electoral Act and the matter is under investigation.

"As this matter is currently being investigated, it is not appropriate to provide further comment at this time." a statement said.

The NT News understands Mr Kearney has told the AFP the initial contact from Mr Garner came on June 10 via an unsolicited mobile phone call suggesting a meeting in the future to discuss campaigns and preferences.

During this initial conversation Mr Kearney claims Mr Garner said he might be able to "pay for my nomination fee and also the cost of my core flute flyers."



The next day the pair met at a cafe in Yarrawonga. Mr Kearney claims Mr Garner asked to "withdraw from the campaign", offering to cover the $2000 corflute cost and the $1000 nomination fee. Mr Kearney claims he was also offered a spot as the One Territory candidate in the NT seat of Goyder.

He rejected all offers and made contact with Australia First party president Jim Saleam. Mr Kearney lodged a complaint with the AFP on June 15 on advice from the Australian Electoral Commission.

Mr Garner said he would not comment on the allegations due to an "AFP investigation". He initially would not confirm discussions with Mr Kearney, but later admitted he had spoken and met him as is "standard practice."

Mr Garner, who has preferenced Solomon candidate Natasha Griggs last in Solomon, did not rule out running in the state seat of Port Darwin, saying: "I'm only registered to run in the seat of Solomon."

CLP sources claim Mr Garner has been trying to do preference deals in Port Darwin with them, but there is no suggestion payment was offered

Pauline Hanson is set to return to parliament as a Queensland senator, but is being warned she will have to be on her best behaviour.


The One Nation founder will almost certainly take one of the 12 Queensland Senate seats available, and her party could yet win others in that state, WA and NSW.

Ms Hanson was first elected to federal parliament as a lower house MP in the seat of Oxley in 1996, but was defeated in 1998.

Last year, she lost a run for a Queensland state government seat – the 12th campaign of her colourful and controversial career.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Ms Hanson and other incoming senators should be responsible and not put important state issues like exports and tourism at risk.

"My message to all the senators is you must stand up for Queensland but you must act responsibly,' shGreens leader Richard Di Natale has vowed to fight against what he termed as Ms Hanson's "racist and bigoted agenda".

"We will take it right up to her, to show that in a modern Australia there is no place for racism, there is no place for bigotry, for the sort of hatred that she is spreading through her views," Senator Di Natale said in Melbourne today.

"We won't roll over like (former prime minister) John Howard did when Pauline Hanson first came on to the political scene federally."

Ms Hanson declined to speak to the media today, but spoke to the 9NEWS election panel while the votes were still being counted, telling them "I know what the people are thinking and how they're feeling, so let's get this country on track."
She said.



I would have voted Australia first if they ran in my electorate. The media always did hassle Pauline. She has kinda had the last laugh now though.
You can't knock her for trying and fighting despite everything she has been though.
