The man killed in Melbourne's Bourke Street attack has been identified as the owner of a well-known Italian restaurant in the city centre.

Sisto Malaspina, who has run Bourke Street's Pellegrini's cafe since 1974, was fatally stabbed by Hassan Khalif Shire Ali on Friday afternoon in what is being treated as a terrorist attack.

Pellegrini's was closed on Saturday morning, as mourners gathered outside.

The Victoria police chief commissioner, Graham Ashton, said the force was still contacting family members and would not be able to formally identify the victim until Saturday afternoon. He said the victim was a 74-year-old man who worked in the city.

Considered a Melbourne institution, Pellegrini's was one of the first venues in the city to install an espresso machine. Its proximity to the Victorian parliament has made it a popular venue among the city's movers and shakers.

Ashton said the two others injured in the attack were a Tasmanian man and a resident of Hampton Park, in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs. The Tasmanian man has been identified as Launceston businessman Rod Patterson



This adds insult to injury for me! The guy they killed was a man I had spoken to before as I've been to his Italian resteraunt with my family! I was in Melbourne a year ago chatting with him.

A gang of African youths have smashed their way into a McDonald's restaurant and bashed a teenage employee with a metal pole

The terrifying armed robbery unfolded in Laverton, Melbourne's south-west, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. 

Four masked offenders demanded cash before fleeing the scene, leaving a 19-year-old man with a serious laceration to his head.
'The offenders, who are perceived to be African in appearance, fled the scene.'

The city's western suburbs are among the worst areas when it comes to alleged offenders born in Sudan, figures from Victoria's Crime Statistics Agency show.

The number Sudanese defendants in Maribyrnong surged by 60 per cent between 2009 and 2018, climbing from 80 to 128 after more than doubling in one year.
In total, 1,384 alleged offenders born in Sudan have faced criminal charges during the past decade, in the inner-west local government area where 15 mainly African youths last year burst into a Footscray barber shop and hit a man in the head with a tomahawk.

On Boxing Day last year, a police officer was kicked in the face when he tried to arrest a 16-year boy at the Highpoint Shopping Centre at nearby Maribyrnong.
A little farther west, the Wyndham City Council area was another hot spot for African crime with 818 Sudanese-born defendants during the past decade.

The problem has dramatically escalated, with just six people from Sudan charged in 2009
That surged to 82 in 2016, more than doubled to 180 last year before reaching 288 in the year to June 30.

This occurred in a local government area where an AirBnB house at Werribee was trashed in December 2017, with four teenagers arrested.

Police were called to the home on Attunga Grove following reports two women were assaulted leaving residents terrified as gangs of teenagers pelted police with rocks.

The Menace to Society gang was blamed for damaging walls and furniture and spraying 'MTS' graffiti, after a party descended into chaos about 3.30am.

The area also covered Tarneit where Daily Mail Australia last year documented the trashing of the Ecoville Community Park, also by Menace to Society.

Melbourne's western suburbs weren't the only places experiencing higher levels of African gang crime, with the Greater Dandenong region in the city's east and the city centre districts also on the list.

In Melbourne's city centre, 2,695 Sudanese-born people were charged during the past decade.

The number arrested quadrupled from 85 in 2009 to 365 in the year to June 2018.

A woman in a burqa furiously confronted people outside the Melbourne home of a man arrested for suspected terrorist offences today, calling them "cockroaches" and blocking entry to the premises with her vehicle.

The angry scenes came after police swooped on three Victorian men, who were caught allegedly preparing an Islamic State-inspired attack. Officers believe the trio intended to open fire on a Melbourne crowd with a semiautomatic rifle, with an intent to "kill as many people as possible".

Ertunc Eriklioglu, 30, of Dallas, Samed Eriklioglu, 26, of Campbellfield, and Hanifi Halis, 21, of Greenvale, have been charged with planning a terrorist attack and have since faced court.

The trio appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, each charged with one count of acting in preparation for or in planning of a terrorist act, and were remanded in custody to face court in April for committal mention.

Prosecutors will have to comb through thousand of intercepted phone calls, text messages and almost 8000 hours of listening device material involved in the case against the accused while the three men remain behind bars

Samed and Ertunc's father Armagan Eriklioglu fronted the media today and said his sons were "good men".

"They don't even know how to use a weapon," Mr Eriklioglu said, according to The Age . "They are very quiet, they're not wild, they're not aggressive. We haven't got no weapons, they (police) couldn't find anything.

"I wanted to come out here and say it's not true ... I don't know where they (police) got this information from.

"They don't like Islamic State."

All three are Australian citizens of Turkish background and police said their wives and children were home when they were arrested.

Armagan said police, who stormed the Melbourne homes at 3am this morning, said the raid left his house a mess.

"My mum's bungalow (out the back) was smashed, very messy, the doors are gone," he said.

"They locked my hands (behind his back) ... my wife she didn't have (a) scarf, they got her as well
Victoria Police confirmed today two of the men were brothers and all three of their Australian passports were cancelled earlier this year.

"It's our view that, while a specific location had not been finalised, there was a view towards a crowded place, a place where maximum people would be attending, to be able to kill, we allege, as maximum an amount of people as possible," Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters.

"I believe, over more recent days, attempts have been made to source a semiautomatic rifle to assist with the carrying out of that terrorism event

A worker has been stabbed by an unknown man during a random incident in the western suburbs.

The victim, 42, was performing construction work at a home on Bickford St in Richmond late Tuesday morning when he was stabbed in the stomach.

The man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after being treated at the scene by paramedics.

The wound was reportedly not life threatening.
