Ryan Hickey, 25, and James Fitzgerald, 30, were ruthlessly bashed by the gang of youths, who repeatedly kicked and stomped on their heads even after they had handed over all of their possessions.

The pair were attacked in the Fitzroy Gardens in separate incidents about 3am on April 14.

Mr Fitzgerald said he handed over his wallet, phone and passport to the thugs amid a flurry of kicks and punches, but they appeared determined to kill him.
``I thought, `OK, they've got my stuff now' and that's when the beating really began,'' he said.

``It was savage. It was extreme violence ... I must have been kicked and stomped in the head about a dozen, 15 times, maybe more and I was lying on the ground covering my head and they were literally kicking it like it was a football. Not little digs, but proper kicks.''

Mr Fitzgerald, who moved to Melbourne from London two-and-half-years ago, suffered a broken wrist as he shielded his head from the blows.

``People were stamping on my head repeatedly like it wasn't a person's head, but like a balloon,'' he said.

He was able to escape when a woman accompanying the thugs begged them to stop and whispered in his ear while they were distracted for him to run for his life.

``I was thinking 'this is it' and then luckily that girl saved me. Because if she hadn't of said that, they weren't going to stop,'' Mr Fitzgerald said.

Mr Hickey sustained a broken vertebrae in his spine after the same gang bashed him almost to death a short time before Mr Fitzgerald's attack.


Like Mr Fitzgerald, the gang bashed Mr Hickey before and after stealing his wallet and phone.

``It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced in my life,'' he said. ``If they just wanted my wallet and mobile phone they would have done what they needed to do and taken off.''

During the operation, clandestine laboratories at Rosewater and Renown Park were also discovered, while luxury cars including two BMWs, a Mercedes and a Porsche had been seized.
"We believe that the heroin, specifically, was coming from Vietnam and this group of people used some of their links that they had back to Vietnam to assist them with their activities," Mr Dickson said     
      
Assistant Commissioner Paul Dickson said Operation Elixir, which began in June last year, had led to the seizure of 2.2kg of methamphetamine, 145g of heroin, 500g of cocaine and $185,170 in cash.
"This operation has been significant. It will put a great dent into the organised activities of these individuals," he said.

"There's somewhere between 25,000 to 30,000 street deals that we have been able to knock out of the community, which is significant."
Mr Dickson said the group imported heroin and methamphetamine from Vietnam.

EIGHTEEN Vietnamese asylum seekers were recaptured after a mass breakout from a high-security detention centre in Darwin, and four men remain at large after a daring midnight escape.


The Immigration Department refused to comment on how the 18 men escaped from Northern Immigration Detention Centre on Friday night.
It was the second breakout from a Darwin facility in four days.


Spokesman Sandi Logan said immigration officials had demanded an explanation from security provider Serco.


"The department will commission a full independent review into the escapes," Mr Logan said.
"We want to know how this occurred and what steps need to be taken to avoid a repeat."






NT Police - who have ramped up the power to respond to immigration emergencies - had caught all of the men by about noon yesterday, as 21 Vietnamese detainees were taken from Darwin to Manus Island.
It is unknown whether the fear of offshore processing fuelled their peers' escape.

A MAN has pushed a woman to the ground and stolen her handbag at Athol Park.                                       
The woman, 66, was walking to her car on Glenroy St when the man grabbed her handbag and shoved her to the ground about 5pm yesterday.
The man ran off and was last seen getting into the front passenger door of a faded green late 1990s TF Magna with lowered suspension, which drove off south along Glenroy St.
He was described as aged about 40, with an olive complexion, brown straight hair, slight stubble on his face and wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt and dark green pants.

POLICE need help to identify a man captured on security camera throwing a hammer and breaking a train window at Parafield train station.                                       
The man was among a group of men and women on the Gawler line who caused a disturbance on Monday, April 29.
When the group alighted at the Parafield station, the man smashed the window with a shift hammer, causing about $1000 damage.

A MAN has dragged a woman from a Woodville Park bus stop into his car and sexually assaulted her.                                       
The woman, 25, was waiting at bus stop 25 on the southern side of Torrens Rd between 6.30pm and 7pm yesterday when a man in a dark green Commodore pulled up.
He got out and spoke to the woman briefly before grabbing her by the wrist and dragging her into the front passenger seat of the car.
The man drove the woman to nearby Stanley St where he sexually assaulted her, police said.
The woman, who was not physically injured, was able to escape from the man and sought help nearby.
Sexual Crime Investigation Branch Detective Superintendent Damien Powell said the attack lasted up to half an hour.
"The sexual assault has occurred both within and outside the car," he said."We think that it's occurred within about a 30-minute period but we can't narrow it down any further at this time.
"An examination of the scene has been conducted and forensic material has been identified and is waiting further analysis."
Det-Supt Powell said the suspect had approached the woman as though he knew her.
"We don't have enough specific details around the actual words at this point in time," he said.
"What we know at this stage is that the man had somehow intimated that he knew her, but the woman doesn't recognise this man so clearly that was not the case.
"It's quite a traumatic experience for the woman and our detectives will be speaking with the woman over an extended period of time as more information comes to light to assist us."
The suspect was described as man with dark skin but his nationality is unknown. He was aged 20-30, with a medium build, short dark hair, dark eyes and was wearing black track suit pants and a dark short-sleeved top.
