STABBINGS in Central Australia's tourist capital Alice Springs have reached epidemic proportions, and traditional Aboriginal thigh spearing is being blamed.
Surgeons at Alice Springs Hospital say the town is in crisis, with the number of stab injuries, blunt force injuries, bone breaks and burns admissions rising.

The town now reports the highest rate of stabbings in the world, with 390 incidents for every 100,000 people.

Most concerning, say the medics, is that almost 40 per cent of the stabbings were thigh injuries most likely meted out by Aboriginal elders as traditional punishment.

The practice, designed to settle grievances, is performed by elders who "have a deep knowledge of human anatomy and are skilled at spearing the femoral artery with deft accuracy," Dr Abraham Jacob wrote in a report published in the latest ANZ Journal of Surgery.

The study shows 16 of the 605 Aborigines admitted with thigh stab wounds between 1998 and 2005 were dead on arrival.

"We found a significant and particular pattern of traditional stab injuries," Dr Jacob said.

"Medial thigh injury to kill, posterior thigh to permanently disable and lateral thigh to punish."

Contrary to anecdotal reports, women were just as likely to be subjected to the practice as men, and the location was town camps and homes, not streets or pubs as previously thought.

About 20 per cent of the victims were admitted with stab wounds more than once, and in the same number of cases the victim absconded before they had completed treatment.

Dr Jacob and his colleagues said the study was the first to reveal the extent of injury and death due to traditional spearing, saying it adds to the town's growing poor statistics.

"Alice Springs has been given the title of the crime capital of Australia, and its town camps have been described as a 'sea of despair' with conditions similar to South African ghetto townships," Dr Jacob said.

The camps' population was expected to double in the next five years, speeding up already increasing rates of injury and death.

Being a decade old report, Alice springs tourism industry has been lost because now they built an Airport at Ayres rock and the tourists don't bother much coming now since the Abos demanded White people stop climbing their dirty rock they call Uluru, so the industry in Alice is Abo welfare. Also the trouble they make powers it's economy.

Statistically there are more stabbings there than in a third world area.

A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been found dead and others have been injured after days of escalating unrest and fighting came to a head in the remote community of Ali Curung.

Local businesses within Ali Curung, located 150km southeast of Tennant Creek, were forced to lock their doors while a large group of residents clashed on Monday.

Many of the locals involved were seen fighting with weapons including knives, pipes and nula nulas, while others set fire to cars and looted homes

When officers arrived, they were met with scenes of burning vehicles and ransacked buildings after a reported 100 people ran riot through the community.

Southern Desert Division Superintendent Jody Nobbs said NT Police sent reinforcements to quell the disturbances at 11.30am and discovered a 25-year-old man they believe was killed during the unrest.

"Police are certainly treating this as a suspicious death and accordingly have sent police investigation officers from both Tennant Creek and Darwin," he said.

He said the cause of the unrest was still unclear but police would not rule out a possible link to the tragedy in which four young people died by a lonely, remote road on Wednesday

The operators of the local Mirnirri Store said they had witnessed ongoing tensions between the east and west side of town for years

TWO men have been arrested over a wild brawl captured on CCTV at a popular northern suburbs social club.

The images show a man armed with a stick and another man with his hand wrapped in what appeared to be cloth chase a man and a woman to the entrance of the Casuarina Club on Sunday morning.

The man armed with the stick struck the male, while his colleague picked up a sign placed at the club's entrance and threw it towards the doorway
The only security guard stationed at the front of the pub kept the men at bay until he was forced to retreat to the entrance and the front doors were closed.

A Casuarina Club staff member, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the incident was not isolated.

He said a group of up to 20 itinerants who drank in a nearby carpark had pub patrons concerned for their own safety.

UPDATED: AN 11-YEAR-OLD girl has allegedly been stabbed at least eight times by a man overnight in the remote NT community of Hermannsburg.

Territory Duty Superintendent Lee Morgan said that fortunately the girl had survived the incident and was now in hospital."

A 11-year-old child was stabbed about eight times," he said.

"(A man) is in custody and fortunately the child hasn't suffered any life-threatening injuries.

"The child is in hospital but is in a stable condition with no damage to any vital organs."

An NT Police spokeswoman said detectives had travelled to the community and investigations are continuing.

"At this stage, initial inquiries indicate the incident was not domestic violence related and investigations are continuing," she said.

The spokeswoman said police responded to a report of an alleged aggravated assault involving the 11-year old girl around 6pm in a remote community south west of Alice Springs.

"On arrival they located the child with multiple injuries consistent with stab wounds," she said


Abos just can't keep their hands to themselves!  Well I guess Alice Springs and surrounds aren't statistically the World's stab capital per capita for no reason?!

AN ACCUSED thief who assaulted a guard and escaped from his police cell in Borroloola remains on the run.

Lex Noble, 21, was arrested on December 22 after breaking into the Borroloola police station.

Police alleged two officers went to Noble's cell at 10pm on Wednesday and Noble assaulted one of the officers before making his escape.

The officers gave chase but were unable to find him.

Central command's Michael Hebb said police had been searching the Borroloola community and region, and further searches were continuing.

"Additional policing resources have been deployed to Borroloola over the past week to assist local members with a number of incidents in the community," he said.

"I also acknowledge that the escape of a prisoner from police custody is of significant concern, and the circumstances relating to this escape will be the subject of ... internal investigation



He must think Police are incompetent at their job if he is bold enough to break into a police station.
