A far-right extremist has yelled at a jury after being found guilty of plotting terror attacks in Melbourne, claiming they didn't have "all the facts".
Phillip Galea was found guilty of planning attacks on "left-wing" targets in Victoria including the Trades Hall and others between August 2015 and 2016.

"You weren't given all the facts," the convicted terror plotter called out as jury members were being taken from the courtroom on Thursday

The 35-year-old equated the "left wing" with Muslims and held the former responsible for the "Islamisation of Australia", the Supreme Court jury was told during the trial.

He aimed to target the city's anarchist club, the Melbourne Resistance Centre along with Trades Hall to "eliminate leaders of the left".
Galea had looked up maps and the clubs' addresses, prosecutors argued.

He was also convicted of creating a document "likely to facilitate" a terrorist act, which he labelled the "Patriot's Cookbook

The Braybrook man took the stand during the seven-week trial and claimed the first version of the guide was meant to be a a Monty Python-esque satire.

He had also been connected to the far-right group Reclaim Australia and had previously spoken about targeting left-wing activists at a rally with "chemical bombs".

Galea's defence claimed his terror plot was actually a "fake plan" to expose a police mole.

"He put together a fake plan which would expose the police informer he believed to be acting against right-wing groups," barrister Felicity Gerry QC said of the allegations.

He believed police had planted an informer in right-wing groups as "part of a left-wing political objective against the right", she said during the trial.

There were also claims aired in court that Galea wanted to cut throats, inject people with acid and target police with snake venom.

Arson and explosives experts raided Galea's home in November 2015 and seized five cattle prods and 362.1 grams of mercury.

Computer equipment was also seized, and police said Galea researched homemade bombs, ballistic armour and guns.

Galea described himself as a self-taught electrical engineer who was using the mercury to replicate an engine originally created by 19th century English scientist Michael Faraday.

The jury began deliberations on Monday afternoon and returned the guilty verdicts on Thursday.

He will appear for a pre-sentence hearing in March next year

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8012867/German-far-right-extremists-plotted-New-Zealand-style-attack.html

A gang of German far-right extremists who were arrested last week were plotting mosque attacks similar to last year's atrocity in New Zealand, officials said today

The 12 men were detained in raids across Germany last Friday and 'shocking' details of their plans have since emerged.

The suspected terror plotters were planning major attacks including mass-casualty assaults on Muslims during prayers, it is believed

The group planned to use semi-automatic weapons to copy last March's attacks in Christchurch in New Zealand, where 51 people were killed at two mosques.

'It's shocking what has been revealed here, that there are cells here that appear to have become radicalised in such a short space of time,' interior ministry spokesman Bjoern Gruenewaelder said in Berlin today.

Investigators learned about the plot from someone who had infiltrated the group, the reports said.

Their meetings and chat activity had been under observation and the alleged leader had detailed his plans at a meeting last week.

According to German newspaper Bild, the ringleader was a 53-year-old from Augsburg named by investigators as Werner S

'It is the task of the state, and of course of this government, to protect free practice of religion in this country, with no reference to what religion it might be,' Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

'Anyone practising their religion in Germany within our legal order should be able to do so without being endangered or threatened'.

Prosecutors said on Friday they had launched early morning raids to determine whether the suspects already had weapons or other supplies.

Of the 12 men arrested on Friday, four are believed to have founded the group while eight more had promised to support them with money and weapons

The suspects, all of whom are German citizens, also included a police officer previously suspended over his links to the far right, North-Rhine Westphalia state interior minister Herbert Reul said on Friday.

Bild claimed to have identified him as Thorsten W, a 50-year-old medieval history enthusiast whose posts online included pictures of himself with a sword and shield and rants describing Germany as a 'radical left dictatorship'.

German authorities have turned increased attention to the country's underground extreme right scene since the murder of conservative local politician Walter Luebcke last June.

In an October attack on a synagogue in Halle, an assailant armed with home-made weapons killed two people at random on the street and in a Turkish restaurant after failing to breach the temple's solid wooden door.

 https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2020/02/21/germany-shooting-racism-terrorism/

A man who went on a killing spree across German bars had posted an online rant calling for a "complete extermination" of foreigners and people of different faiths, authorities say.

Police are now considering the mass murders a case of domestic terrorism, after it was discovered the killer had been posting extremist videos containing "confused ideas and far-fetched conspiracy theories". <--LOONY!

The gunman was 43-year-old local living with his parents in the town of Hanau, 25km east of Frankfurt, near the scenes of the mass shootings in which at least nine people were murdered, including his mother

Chancellor Angela Merkel said the events exposed the "poison" of racism in Germany and she pledged to stand up against those who seek to divide the country

Authorities revealed his name to be 'Tobias R', releasing just his surname in line with local police's usual practices. Local media later confirmed his full name was Tobias Rathjen.

On a since removed personal website, the man wrote that he was born in Hanau in 1977 and grew up in the city. He worked as a bank clerk and earned a university business degree in 2007

Neo-Nazis among Australia's most challenging security threats, ASIO boss Mike Burgess warns

By defence correspondent Andrew Greene | ABC (Australia) | 24 February 2020

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-24/asio-director-general-mike-burgess-neo-nazi-threat-rising/11994178

Neo-Nazis are emerging as one of Australia's most challenging security threats, according to the country's top intelligence chief.

ASIO director general Mike Burgess says "small cells" of right-wing extremists are regularly gathering to salute Nazi flags, inspect weapons and to disperse their "hateful ideology".

In a rare public address from inside ASIO's heavily fortified Canberra headquarters, Mr Burgess said foreign espionage and interference activities against Australia were higher now than at any time during the Cold War.

While delivering ASIO's annual threat assessment, the director-general warned a terrorist attack on Australia was still "probable" and it was "truly disturbing" to see extremists trying to recruit children as young as 13 or 14

"The number of terrorism leads we are investigating right now has doubled since this time last year," Mr Burgess told an audience of diplomats and intelligence officers.

"The character of terrorism will continue to evolve and we believe that it will take on a more dispersed and diversified face".

Mr Burgess said right-wing extremism had been in "ASIO's sights for some time", but had obviously come into "sharp, terrible focus" following last year's Christchurch mass shooting.

"In Australia, the extreme right-wing threat is real and it is growing," he said.

"In suburbs around Australia, small cells regularly meet to salute Nazi flags, inspect weapons, train in combat and share their hateful ideology," he said.

Far right-wing groups are now more organised and security conscious than they were in previous years according to the ASIO boss, who has revealed Australian extremists are seeking to connect with like-minded individuals in other parts of the world

In a previously undisclosed case from earlier this year, ASIO advice led to an Australian being blocked from leaving the country to "fight with an extreme right-wing group on a foreign battlefield".

"While these are small in number at this time in comparison to what we saw with foreign fighters heading to the Middle East, any development like this is very concerning," Mr Burgess observed.

"Meanwhile, extreme right-wing online forums such as The Base proliferate on the internet, and attract international memberships, including from Australians."

The ASIO boss said his organisation expected such groups would "remain an enduring threat, making more use of online propaganda to spread their messages of hate".

"While we would expect any right-wing-extremist-inspired attack in Australia to be low capability — i.e. a knife, gun or vehicle attack — more sophisticated attacks are possible

During his wide-ranging address, Mr Burgess declared the level of threat faced in Australia from foreign espionage and interference activities was "currently unprecedented".

"It is higher now than it was at the height of the Cold War," he said.

"Indeed, some of the tactics being used against us are so sophisticated, they sound like they've sprung from the pages of a Cold War thriller
For the first time, the intelligence chief disclosed the case of an unspecified foreign intelligence service that had sent a sleeper agent to Australia.

"The agent lay dormant for many years, quietly building community and business links, all the while secretly maintaining contact with his offshore handlers," Mr Burgess revealed.

"The agent started feeding his spymasters information about Australia-based expatriate dissidents, which directly led to harassment of the dissidents in Australia and their relatives overseas."

According to Mr Burgess, the agent received "significant cash payments" in exchange for providing "on-the-ground logistical support for spies who travelled to Australia to conduct intelligence activities".

"These are the sort of insidious activities ASIO works to detect and disrupt every day," Mr Burgess said, while confirming ASIO had disrupted the operation

Who are the neo-Nazi groups threatening Australia's security?

Cait Kelly | The New Daily (Australia) | 26 February 2020

https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/2020/02/26/australia-neo-nazi

As Neo-Nazis are named as one of Australia's most serious security threats, there's concern the secretive groups have gone underground and may be more difficult to track.

In his first annual threat assessment from the nation's capital, ASIO director-general Mike Burgess took aim at the "hateful ideology" of right-wing extremists.

"In suburbs around Australia, small cells regularly meet to salute Nazi flags, inspect weapons, train in combat and share their hateful ideology," he said.

In Victoria, a shop in Melbourne's north-west has recently closed down after it was exposed for selling Nazi memorabilia.

Before it closed The Herald Sun spoke to owner Gary McDonald, who wore an SS ring and said most of his sales were linked to the Third Reich.

"If I've upset one person, what do they want me to do about it? They've upset me by whingeing about it," he said.

When asked about his ring, he said: "That is my business what I wear. It's my prerogative

Mr McDonalds's store was just one in a long line of controversies relating to the sale of Nazi memorabilia in Australia amid growing anti-semitism across the globe.

But experts are warning the people with the most dangerous views may not be so obvious that they would actually display signs and symbols.

Australia's alt right groups are diverse but it's rare they publicly self-describe as Nazi and even rarer they buy memorabilia, said research director for the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Julie Nathan.

"Some of the neo-Nazis will buy memorabilia. They'll want to have genuine articles from the Third Reich, but often it can be military collectors," Ms Nathan said

"I would put it on a lower level of connection. In extreme right-wing circles, it's not common for them to be talking about memorabilia."

Although the groups share similar values, they can be very different, she said.

"The extreme right within Australia are quite diverse and there's different leaders and different streams," Ms Nathan said.

"You can't say the extreme right believe this, this and this. It's a conglomerate. That's the best way to describe it."

There are some key groups, and many of them overlap.

But the only one that proudly claims the title 'Nazi' are the Antipodean Resistance.

The Antipodean Resistance don't mince words. They describe themselves as 'the Hitlers you've been waiting for'.

To join the men's chapter, you need to be white, straight, young, monogamous and date only other white people.

The group rose to fame by putting up swastika stickers in places like Fitzroy, and on the Monash University campus.

"Antipodean Resistance, which was very active for about two years, put up posters and stickers," said Ms Nathan.

"They've gone quiet, at least online, but they're still around. Part of the people belong to Antipodean Resistance became part of The Lads Society, which is a front organisation."

The Lads Society, run by Blair Cottrell and Tom Sewell, brand themselves as a fitness group but have radical racial undertones and want to create "Anglo-European" enclaves in Australian cities.

In a YouTube clip, one member described it as: "The purpose of this organisation was to build a community of young Australian men to provide job networking, mental and physical health as well as an open space for communication."

"As we know Australia might not be going in the direction we want it to and there is very little we can do at a political level.

"Our idea is solving problems with community by making sure we're all self-improving, with good physical fitness, mental health, job security. The whole idea of this is reinvigorating Australian culture."

The rhetoric doesn't sound that bad – almost positive.

But the idea is to cast a wide net, said Charles Sturt University lecturer of terrorism studies Dr Kristy Campion

Because it's not overtly Nazi at the start, it's easy for a wide range of people to see appeal," Dr Campion said.

"They use whiteness, heritage, the natural order, narratives around threats through immigration and invasion, and that's when they start to attack Jews, Muslims, occasionally Christians.

"So what they're able to do is create these narratives that appeal to a wide group in Australian society.

"If one element of it doesn't draw you in, there's a chance another will."

There isn't a set profile, and we need to stay clear of tropes, she said.

"There's not a specific profile. There are a couple of tropes – there's the idea these people are underemployed or facing financial uncertainty, the memberships of the groups are just male. They're untrue.

"In Australia from what I've observed, they're generally white and they have rigid ideas around sexual morality, so they do tend to be quite homophobic

Although many groups have been silent recently, she said their ideologies have only hardened.

"Particularly since Christchurch, a lot of the ideas have not gone away. We knew the attack re-energised the extreme right. It has awakened certain ideas."

At their active, at least publicly, right-wing extremists have managed to infiltrate the Young Nationals, commit murder and arson, hold Reclaim Australia rallies, and according to ASIO, recruit members as young as 13.

Although it's not clear what secretive work ASIO is doing about the threat these groups pose, the fact they're calling them out is reassuring, said associate professor of law at Monash University, Patrick Emerton.

"It's good to see them taking it seriously, because in the past they haven't," he said

"All the discourse was focused on Islamic groups, and when one reviewed ministerial statements and ASIO documents that was the emphasis."

It is likely ASIO is monitoring their online activity and even sending in spies, he said.

"Some of the techniques include phone tapping, intercepting mail. They can be authorised to break into properties," Professor Emerton said.

"They have reasonably extensive powers to use online infiltration, online spying, intercepting people's emails and their social media accounts.

"ASIO also use internal techniques of infiltration. So spies and informants have been used against Al Qaeda, so we can guess some of that will happen with these movements

They are saying a growing interest in anti-Semitism and White Nationalism is a bad thing! ... I don't! Stopping non-White pests from destroying this land is doing a community service!
