German magazine Elle has issued an apology after being slammed for their November issue, which features the tagline 'black is back' and appears to proclaim that 'models of colour are back in fashion'.

The publication's leading fashion feature shows the profiles of six 'new' black models, including well-known model Joan Smalls.

Additionally, the bio of model Janaye Furman mistakenly features a picture of Naomi  Chin Wing, and despite the cover being sold on 'back to black', a white model is featured as the cover model.

The cover reads 'Back to black - Black is back again: irresistibly' and the translated feature says:  'Beautiful, successful, [politically] active: Never were models of colour so in demand as now. These amazing women inspire us both on and off the catwalk!'.

In a statement issued this morning, the publication apologised for 'making several mistakes' in their attempt to highlight the work of models of colour 'from different angles', adding 'we apologise to anyone we might have hurt'.

Instagram account Diet Prada, an authority on holding fashion brands accountable for their messages, shared a picture of the cover and inside feature, slamming the publication.

They wrote: 'Not a good look, Elle Germany. For their November 2019 issue, the presumably white-led publication declares that 'black is back

'Ironic when they, along with much of the fashion industry, have been complicit in denying visibility to black models until relatively recently.'

They added: 'Oh, and apparently they can't actually tell models apart. In the bottom middle, a picture of Naomi Chin Wing is used in place of Janaye Furman.

'And Joan Smalls has been around for a minute/hasn't gone anywhere lmao (sic). The issue, titled 'Back to Black', also features a white model on the cover. You can't make this stuff up

The post quickly racked up almost 80,000 likes from outraged followers slamming the feature.

One wrote: 'What a boring editorial framework on their part even if it wasn't ahistorical and racist', while another added: 'Good intention but poor execution'.

'This is what happens when companies who "want" to be diverse try to speak on diversity and have no diversity in their offices', another said.

Another said: 'The white model on the cover is really the cherry on top of it all'.

And while the models mentioned in the feature didn't address the controversy, Strictly Come Dancing's Motsi Mabuse wrote: 'Another day for us Black woman in Germany where you think

Even though we are White, what they are saying is, because race is only a social construct, if we all go out on the streets and kick the f. out of every porch monkey we see, BUT we call them White dog, White C*nt, F*ken' Honkey, Cracka', White Supremacist, Nazi, Racist,...  and scream Fascist! Remember Trayvon! and KILL WHITEY! while we do it, then we are defending blackness and we are therefore the victims? Racially motivated extreme violence is permitted as long as we claim to be defending so-called people of colour?

It's not what you do or who you are, it's what you say and how you choose to identify at that particular moment.

Muslim campaigners have called for a police officer to be sacked after shameful footage of a traffic stop exposed him racially abusing two women wearing hijabs.

An independent commission found the senior constable and his colleague engaged in serious misconduct after pulling over the driver and her stepmother during a traffic stop.

The constable could also be heard in body camera footage during the incident in Parramatta on April 20 threatening to arrest the driver as an 'accessory to murder

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has already spoken out against the 'appalling' conduct revealed by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).

A campaign has now called for the constable to be removed from his position, with the community organising a 'peaceful protest' at Parramatta Park at 2pm on Saturday.

The event was publicised on the popular Lebo Memes Facebook page.

'Having a large following the people ask me to use my platform to organise it,' the page's administrator told The Sunday Telegraph.

NSW Police said they were aware of the event and would be monitoring it throughout the day.

The protest was, however, called off at the last minute due to the hot weather.

'We decided to send the message out to the boys and the community and tell them not to come,' community leader Steve Dabliz told The Sunday Telegraph.

Protest organisers feared there might be trouble saying hot weather and hot tempers do not mix. 

The Australian Federation of Islamic Federation president Rateb Jneid said on Friday Muslim women already face significant intimidation and harassment in the community.

'For them to face the same actions from police officers is extremely disappointing,' Dr Jneid said.   

The officers pursued the car as they believed the older woman wasn't wearing a seat belt and later failed to indicate at a roundabout. 

The highway patrol officers ran two red lights before activating their lights and sirens to stop the driver and her step-mother.

The senior constables then belittled the women and threatened them with arrest

Once they pulled the women over one officer said: 'You have to be the most stupidest person I've met as a driver of a motor vehicle with a police vehicle [following you] all the way since Church Street to here.'

He failed to tell the women his name and the powers he'd be exercising - as required - instead alleging the passenger hadn't been wearing a seatbelt and the driver hadn't stopped as directed.

The woman explained she wasn't sure if police were pursuing her - however the officer spoke over her and continued his verbal attack


He then began to demand identification from the women, with the young driver explaining her passenger didn't have any with her.

When the woman failed to produce her ID, the officer said they were going to 'take her back to jail anyway' before he demanded the passenger get out of the car.

The policeman told his fellow officer to 'whack the cuffs' on the driver while he retrieved something from the car

When the women tried to ask questions and explain their situation, he told them he would 'charge her as an accessory to murder'.

'Don't argue with me love or you'll be going back in the paddy wagon as accessory to bloody murder,' he said.

While he rummaged through the car, his fellow officer could be heard telling the 24-year-old to hand in her licence if she 'didn't know how to drive on Australian roads'.

He then asked her to 'swear to god' and 'swear to Allah'.

The police charged the young driver with driving with an unrestrained passenger, negligent driving, disobeying police, not complying with licence conditions and failing to indicate at a roundabout.

She complained to the LECC about how she and her stepmother were treated

The driver said after the filming ended, the officers said words to the effect of: 'What would the police do if they were in Afghanistan?' and 'There were drugs in the car'.

In evidence to the LECC, Officer 1 denied he lost his temper, but agreed he'd been angry and disrespectful.

He denied his behaviour was due to the women being Muslim but agreed it might appear that way and the women could reasonably view his conduct as racially motivated.

Officer 2 acknowledged he was 'rude and arrogant' but insisted he acted that way whenever he thought people were being untruthful.

The commission found Officer 2 had 'no knowledge of the relevant policies and legislation restraining the behaviour of police officers' and 'his total ignorance' did not disturb him


'A formal response will be provided to the LECC in due course,' a police spokeswoman said in a statement

A police officer is under investigation for posting alt-right memes on his Facebook page just days after he denied making a white power symbol during a protest.

The officer was pictured during the International Mining and Resources Conference protest on Wednesday with his thumb and index figure touching.

Victoria Police said they have spoken to the senior constable who advised them that he was 'simply gesturing the 'are you ok?' sign at protesters.

Within 24 hours he was under fire again after screenshots emerged of his Facebook page which appeared to contain alt-right memes.

The memes are popular within the alt-right community, particularly online forums such as 4chan and 8chan.

During the protests on Wednesday, the officer's profile picture was an illustration of a bald guy known as 'Wojak' or Feels Guy.

A response to one of the comments on his photo was just an image of Pepe the Frog, which is also used by alt-right groups.

The memes were initially created by harmless individuals but following their popularity, groups such as the alt-right used them for political and ideological propaganda.

The officer subsequently deactivated his profile that evening after an image where he performed the hand gesture went viral

He reactivated his profile on Thursday under a different name and photo but deactivated once again. 

Victoria Police expressed their 'extreme disappointment' of the 'inappropriate memes' their fellow officer posted. 

'In regards to his social media page, we are aware of a small number of posts which include inappropriate memes,' they said in a statement
