Staff at an Australian pub have been called out for being 'uneducated and culturally insensitive' after denying entry to a Māori woman with a traditional facial tattoo

Jadene Kini was refused entry to the popular Burleigh Pavilion on the Gold Coast on Sunday, with her friend, NRLW Titans star Madison Bartlett, posing to social media and calling it 'racism at it's finest'.

'Every Māori woman has a birthright for kauae, it's an identity, it's who you are and where you come from,' Ms Kini told 9News.

The moko kauae are traditional female chin tattoos which in Māori culture are believed to be a manifestation of a deeper identity.

After staff at the Burleigh Pavilion told the pair facial tattoos were against the dress code the pair said they tried to convey the significance of the ink but security staff weren't having it.

'We tried to explain it's more than just a facial tattoo it's a cultural tattoo but they didn't really want to listen,' Ms Bartlett added.

The pair said they spoke with multiple staff who all said that she would not be allowed inside.

The venue's dress code bans intimidating or aggressive tattoos along with a general blanket ban on face and neck ink.

Ms Kini and Ms Bartlett say the rule should be reviewed and distinctions made for culturally significant tattoos.

Jacinta Price has labelled the federal government 'racist' for keeping the controversial basics card in certain communities while abolishing the cashless debt card in others.

Anthony Albanese's government confirmed plans to keep the Northern Territory under income management programs - which offers cards with payments that can only be used in approved stores. The territory has a higher percentage of Indigenous residents.

The BasicsCard is used exclusively for 20,000 welfare recipients in the NT and cannot be used on alcohol, pornography, tobacco and gambling.

The cashless debit card, used around the country, sees 20 per cent of the holder's income quarantined against cash withdrawals, gambling and purchases of alcohol.

Other areas, including East Kimberley, Goldfields and Bundaberg-Hervey Bay, will see the cashless debt card become a voluntary opt-in scheme

BasicsCard:

The card can't be used to buy any of the following:

Alcohol, pornography, tobacco and tobacco products, gambling products, gambling services, home-brew kits and home-brew concentrates, gift cards or vouchers that can be transferred for cash or credit.

Cashless debit card:

The card can't be used to withdraw cash or buy: Alcohol, gambling products, some gift cards

Ms Price said the Albanese government were targeting Aboriginals with the scheme - which is set to be voted on in the Senate.

'First they say that's racist to introduce income management, now they're allowing just for those in the Northern Territory – who we know are predominantly Indigenous Australians - to be kept on the basics card,' she told reporters.

'So, it's these actions I would call racist. Because the former Coalition government made plans to ensure that the cashless debit card would be available to all welfare recipients eventually across the nation.'

The change will see 17,000 people given the option to opt in or out of the cashless debit card system.

The enhanced program will come into play from July next year for whoever opts in, while residents in Cape York and the Northern Territory will be automatically moved over under the new income management program.

Deputy PM Richard Marles described the cashless debit card as a legislation that would 'strip people of their dignity'.

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth defending the decision, saying there were different models for different areas.

'That is a different model that is not like the other sites,' she told ABC Radio.

A Northern Territory policeman's concerning text messages before he shot an Indigenous teenager dead have again dominated an inquest into the death.



Kumanjayi Walker, 19, died after Constable Zachary Rolfe shot him three times during an attempted arrest in Yuendumu, northwest of Alice Springs on November 9, 2019.

The officer was acquitted at trial in March of murdering Mr Walker amid accusations his use of force after Mr Walker stabbed him was heavy handed.

The Alice Springs inquest into the Warlpiri man's death heard on Monday Const Rolfe sent and received a series of text messages in the months before the shooting referring to Aboriginal people as 'bush c**ns', 'n***ers' and 'grubby f***s'.

In one text, Const Rolfe said 'I'm always ready to make my (body worn) camera face the other way' while discussing the apprehension of an offender during which a colleague allegedly 'lost his s***'.

He also called senior officers investigating a workmate over his allegedly heavy-handed conduct 'gay c***s'.

Asked about the messages and the use of terms such as 'bush c**ns', assistant commissioner Travis Wurst said it was 'disgusting'.

'It's inappropriate. It's not the language of (the Northern Territory Police Force). It's not the language of our community. It's not reflective of who we are,' he told the coroner.

'That language undermines the culture of being a police officer in this agency and what it means to wear this uniform.'

Mr Wurst said he was unaware officers were using the racist terms, saying it should be investigated.

'(To) get to the heart of where that language comes from and why it's even being utilised,' he said.

'That would have been the most appropriate way of going about managing that, because it could be about the individual, it could be about their own personal biases, or it could be a reaction to something they've been exposed to

He rejected the notion it may have been officers 'blowing off steam' and agreed it could lead to Indigenous people being de-humanised.

'It's indicative of someone's personal biases toward a cultural group that has the ability to impact on their ability to do their job,' he said.

'A job that we must do without fear or favour, and objectively and you cannot have that language seeping into the workplace, or in a private context.'

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson will be referred to the Australian Human Rights Commission by NSW Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi after she doubled down on her abuse of the senator by telling her to "p— off back to Pakistan".

The upper house on Tuesday considered a motion that would have censured Senator Hanson for the "divisive, anti-migrant and racist statement" directed at Senator Faruqi after she criticised the British monarchy.

Former footy great Sam Newman has launched an extraordinary attack on the AFL after forcing footy fans to endure multiple 'welcome to country' speeches and a eulogy for a 'heroin addicted indigenous felon' at last week's grand final.

In a long-winded rant, Newman took aim at the league for what he described as 'virtuous, patronising nonsense', even taking time to insult transgender former coach Dani Laidley.

'We had the indigenous show of just nonsense. And then, the only thing they didn't have is maybe they could have put Dani Laidley in an open car and driven her around at half time in the back of a Jeep or something. I mean, seriously,' Newman moaned.

Absolutely we admire and we respect and we give thanks to the traditional land owners for where the game is to be played and we acknowledge that.

'But the virtuous, patronising nonsense that the AFL go on with. A patronising campaign to foster this feigned indignation to divert from their own paranoid white privilege - all they do is drive a wedge between the footballing public, yet we see through it.'

Newman slammed the AFL for forcing football fans to watch not one, but two welcome to country speeches before the ball was even bounced. 

'We had a man with a beard came out and told us... about where the boundaries of all the various tribes and things go. Just an absolute propaganda chat about nothing,' Newman said.
