Comment:   If the races were reversed, the Australian media would be going on about how a "racist" kidnapped a poor little Hispanic girl

A MAN accused of fathering two children with a woman he held captive for 18 years has apparently told US media that he has "turned my life around" and asked people to wait to hear a "most powerful, heart-warming story".

Jaycee Lee Dugard had been missing since she was allegedly abducted by Phillip and Nancy Garrido

Convicted sex offender Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, is being held in California on suspicion of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard when she was 11, keeping her hidden from the outside world and using her as a sex slave for himself and his wife.

Jaycee Lee Dugard, now 29, appeared at a police station in Concord, California on Wednesday and identified herself as the missing woman, police officials said.

At a press conference, the local sherrif's department said conversations with the woman confirmed that she was Dugard, who was kidnapped at age 11.

Police officials identified a couple taken into custody in connection with Dugard's kidnap as Phillip and Nancy Garrido. In a telephone interview with local TV station KCRA 3, Garrido urged people to wait for more details about what took place at the house.

"You are going to be completely impressed," he told the network, as reported on its website. "It's a disgusting thing that took place with me at the beginning. But I turned my life completely around and to be able to understand that, you have to start there."

Phillip Garrido is a registered sex offender who has served prison time for kidnapping and rape, Contra Costa county Sherrif Daniel Terry told ABC News, adding the couple were being investigated for kidnapping to commit rape.

Garrido was quoted as saying: "What's kept me busy the last several years is I've completely turned my life around."

He added: "And you're going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim - you wait. If you take this a step at a time, you're going to fall over backwards and in the end, you're going to find the most powerful heart-warming story."

The station reported that Garrido also claimed that he left important documents with an agent at the FBI office in San Francisco.

Police said a search of the Garridos' home "revealed a hidden backyard within the backyard" that included "sheds, tents and outbuildings".

A spokesman added that two children taken into police care when the Garridos were arrested "turned out to be the children of Jaycee and (Phillip) Garrido".

Garrido and his wife were arrested on Wednesday and are being held on bail of $1 million.

Dugard was 11 years old on June 10, 1991 when she was last seen by her stepfather Carl Probyn outside her home in South Lake Tahoe being kidnapped by two occupants in a car.

Probyn, who is now 60, gave chase on a bicycle but was too far away to stop the abduction.

"I had personally given up hope," Probyn told ABC News, adding he was just hoping to find the people responsible.

Probyn, his wife Terry and another daughter flew from Riverside, California to San Francisco to meet Dugard.
