Ever had a mouth ulcer? I've had the occasional one on the tongue probably from a crooked tooth and have always got rid of it with chewing gum forming a barrier or excess saliva being anti-biotic anyway.
This news article exposes the health risks of common over the counter medication.

Back in 87 when I was 17, coons smashed my teeth so that one was snapped in half and others were left jagged. I got the occasional ulcers which I dealt with by drinking straight vodka. I assume it killed the bacteria that caused the ulcer.
Eventually my teeth were fixed well enough not to cause so many problems.
If I am correct in my assumption, then the same could have been done with a glass of salt water washed around the ulcer, spat out and repeated several times a day.
