Title: Fighting Barbaric Mud Pracitces: Ban Kosher & Halal Ritual Slaughter
Post by: Rev.Cambeul on Mon 15 Nov 2010
From Animals Australia

Dear Reverend Cambeul,

This week marks one of the darkest times on the animal welfare calendar as the Festival of Sacrifice commences in the Middle East. Tragically, hundreds of thousands of exported Australian animals will be amongst the millions of animals who are sacrificed during religious celebrations at the end of the Hajj.

In the same way that Christmas has become the peak time of animal suffering in the West with vast numbers of factory farmed animals slaughtered for Christmas celebrations, the Festival of Sacrifice is the worst time of animal suffering throughout the Middle East.

Islamic teachings speak to the importance of humane treatment of animals, but the sheer numbers of animals bought and sacrificed inevitably leads to cruelty on a massive scale as the welfare of individual animals is forgotten.

It is common practice for purchased sheep to be bound, shoved into car boots or loaded onto the back of utes, before suffering a terrifying death on the morning of the Eid; their throats are cut whilst fully conscious, often by inexperienced slaughtermen in private premises or by exhausted abattoir workers who are working at ten times their normal capacity.

It was evidence obtained by Animals Australia investigators of the brutal treatment of Australian sheep in Egypt during this festival that forced the Federal government to ban the live sheep trade to Egypt. Despite similar graphic evidence being documented in other Middle Eastern countries, the Federal government continues to allow animals to be exported to the region.

Please click here to call on your local Federal member of parliament (http://www.animalsaustralia.org/take_action/festival-of-sacrifice/) to use their power to urge Prime Minister Gillard and Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig to ban the cruel live export trade.

Dear Reverend Cambeul

Thank you for your recent email regarding Australia's live export
industry.

The Coalition has always considered animal welfare in the live export
industry to be an important issue.  We remain committed to achieving
animal welfare outcomes while at the same time maintaining significant
markets for our livestock producers.

Australia leads the world in both live animal welfare investment and
best practice animal welfare standards. More than 99 per cent of all
Australian animals arrive fit and healthy at their destinations, and the
live export industry continues to strive to improve mortality rates and
animal welfare standards in destination countries.

Whilst in government, the Coalition introduced legislation and
continually monitored live export practices that provided strong
regulation of the industry.  This included the requirement that
exporters comply with 'Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock'
as well as our investment of $4 million to improve animal welfare
practices in importing countries.

Australia's ongoing involvement in the live export trade provides an
opportunity to influence animal welfare conditions internationally.
According to the independent report release by Alliance Resource
Economics in May 2006, Australia leads the world in these issues.  We
will ensure the Gillard Labor Government continues to support the
requirements the Coalition established in this area.

The Australian livestock export industry contributes $1.8 billion to the
Australian economy and employs 13,000 people.  It should be noted that
there are extremely limited alternatives to live export in areas of
Western and Northern Australia.

A recent Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economic (ABARE)
report found many of the countries importing Australian livestock lacked
widespread refrigeration and when this is combined with cultural and
religious practices, ending live exports would merely see these
countries purchase stock from other nations who may not impose the
world-leading standards that are regulated by Australia.

I have attached a media release from a Livestock Service Manager
assisting with live animals arriving in the Middle East that further
clarifies the situation.

I thank you again for your correspondence on this important matter and I
assure you that the Coalition will continue to work to ensure that
Australia remains a world leader in live export practices.

Yours sincerely

ANDREW SOUTHCOTT MP
Federal Member for Boothby

Dear Mr Southcott,

I write to express my opposition to Australia's live export trade and to
ask you to bring my concerns to the attention of the Prime Minister. In
the coming weeks hundreds of thousands of Australian animals will be
subjected to brutal treatment in the Middle East as part of the
Eid-al-Adha celebrations. The previous Labor government acted to protect
Australian sheep from being brutalised in Egypt during this festival by
banning the live sheep trade to this country, yet sheep and cattle are
still being exported to other Middle Eastern countries where they will
be subjected to similar treatment.

Australia cannot suggest that animal welfare is a priority, whilst it
willingly supplies animals to other countries where they will be treated
and slaughtered in a way that would be illegal in Australia. Doing so
sets the worst possible example, that animals are only chattels to be
traded and slaughtered for profit -- which is contrary to the beliefs
and ethics of the majority of Australians.

It is time for the Federal Government to end this shameful industry --
so that the right message is sent to other nations -- that animals and
their welfare matters. Sending live animals halfway around the world
only to be slaughtered can never be ethically justified -- no matter
what propaganda the live export industry puts out in support of the
continuation of its trade.

Previous governments have just repeated this propaganda instead of
independently analysing the facts and the ethics of our involvement.
Please do not provide me with the standard industry response in defence
of this trade. All I ask is that you present my concerns and that of
many other Australians to the Prime Minister.

Sincerely,

Reverend Cailen Cambeul

Dear Reverend Cambeul,

With the political spotlight still squarely on the live export trade of late, one limited but immensely cruel practice on our own soil has almost gone unnoticed...

For several years, Animals Australia has been fighting to close a loophole that is allowing some Australian abattoirs to kill fully conscious sheep for the ritual slaughter market.

All animals feel fear and pain, and it is well documented that without stunning, sheep can be conscious of the pain and terror of having their throat cut for up to 20 seconds — sometimes more.

This practice is usually illegal in Australia, but a small number of slaughterhouses in Victoria and South Australia have exemptions to practice ritual slaughter of fully conscious sheep.

This Friday, Government officers will consider whether to close this cruel loophole and spare many animals from a painful and terrifying death. We urgently need your help to convince them to use their power to afford all sheep this most basic level of protection. Please, click here to take action now (http://www.animalsaustralia.org/take_action/close-the-loophole-on-ritual-slaughter) and share this (http://www.animalsaustralia.org/take_action/close-the-loophole-on-ritual-slaughter/spread-the-word) with caring people you know.

Subject: Stop Kosher Killing

Australian legislation requires the stunning of animals at slaughter. However, it has come to my attention that several abattoirs in Victoria and South Australia have exemptions from this requirement and follow the barbaric third world practice of ritual slaughter of fully conscious sheep.

I am deeply disgusted and angry to learn that this primitive practice is permitted in Australia.

As confirmed by two recent Australian review papers and many international studies, sheep can suffer pain and fear for up to 20 seconds after the throat cut when not stunned.

I also understand that Islamic and Jewish leaders in Australia largely accept the stunning of animals and already the vast amount of 'halal accredited' meat produced in Australia comes from animals that are stunned. I have found that it is only Jewish and Islamic supremacists that demand these barbaric traditions continue in Australia. Each falsely citing "racism" as their reason to reject laws protecting animals from such inhumane treatment. I take this opportunity to remind you that the welfare of animals has nothing to do with race, and those that seek to pursue such barbaric practices should be brought to account using the full force of the law - no matter who and what they are. If the laws are not there, then create them!

I therefore demand that you take steps to close the loophole that allows Australian abattoirs to kill animals without stunning, and protect all animals in Australia from the unnecessary suffering of primitive, barbaric ritual slaughter.

Sincerely, Reverend Cambeul.

I am a fully qualified slaughter man. And i was in charge of a slaughterhouse in scotland for a few years. If there was any sign of the animal being over stressed or it not being killed in a painless manner the vet who was there at all times would shut down the slaughterhouse. so once again we see different rules for us and  them.

VICTORY! Turtles & dugongs protected from brutal hunts

Animals Australia supporters and caring people across Australia have won a landmark victory for turtles and dugongs in Far North Queensland. Under 'traditional' hunts [by muds Indigenous to Australia ~ Cailen], turtles could have their flippers hacked off while alive, and dugongs were drowned behind boats. But they will now be protected under the Animal Care and Protection Act — thanks to you!

Reverend Cambeul, will you do one thing for this frightened steer?

He was forced into a metal box, tipped off his feet and turned upside down. Terrified and completely immobilised, his throat was then cut. This is fully conscious 'full inversion' slaughter. It causes severe distress, which is why it is illegal in Australia. But it's still deemed an 'acceptable' way for Australian animals to die in the live export trade. Sadly it's too late for this steer whose life ended inside a 'full inversion slaughter box' in Israel. But you can ensure his suffering was not in vain by taking action on facebook and twitter to save animals just like him from the same ordeal. Hundreds of people have already spoken out. Add your voice today!

Religious levy costs Queensland abattoirs thousands each month

QUEENSLAND abattoirs are being slugged thousands of dollars a month through a religious levy on meat exports so powerful Muslim clerics in Jakarta can raise money for Islamic schools and mosques.

The Halal certification fees can cost some meat processors up to $27,000 a month.

The Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), the top Islamic body which orders fatwa religious rulings, has even banned a Brisbane business from operating - because it was not charging Queensland abattoirs enough to give the religious tick-off to export meat.

The scandal has stopped most of Queensland's Halal meat exports to Indonesia, as angry abattoir operators boycott the more expensive Halal certifiers endorsed by the MUI.

Australian companies that certify meat as Halal, or legal under Islamic law, must be accredited with Indonesia's MUI - which approves just one certifier per state or territory.

The MUI has suspended Brisbane based Australian Halal Food Services (AHFS) for engaging in "unfair competition'' that could "weaken (the) Halal certification movement".

Certifiers must donate a share of their revenue to mosques and Islamic schools. [more ... (http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/religious-levy-costs-queensland-abattoirs-thousands-each-month/story-fnihsrf2-1226743106235)]

ANIMAL Welfare workers are powerless to help abused dogs unless an owner can be identified – despite horror reports of animal cruelty in a Territory community – a Government bureaucrat has said.

A Wadeye resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said animals often fell victim to violence when feuding families started rioting in the streets of the community, about 220km southwest of Darwin.

"So many dogs are malnourished, have skin disease, are mistreated and forced to fight other clans' dogs," he said.

"They become victims of riots and gang fights and get killed and skinned as revenge by other clans."

NT Animal Welfare Branch boss Peter Phillips said his office had not received complaints about the treatment of specific animals in the region.

"For offences to be proven under the Animal Welfare Act, the animal must have an owner who can be identified," he said.

The Wadeye resident said he had seen kids throwing a puppy against a wall until it died. "Kids think it is fun and adults and parents don't stop the kids," he said.

"So many dogs have broken legs due to violence toward animals and there are many prolapsed female dogs.

"Cats are also treated the same way or worse. There is no vet service available in Wadeye and no fly-in fly-out vet at all for a few years."

The man said he had contacted animal welfare but was told to gather information on who owned the animals that were neglected or mistreated.

"They should just come and see what's happening and gather information, which is their job," he said.

Mr Phillips said general animal management was "primarily the responsibility of local shires and councils in the NT".

"In many remote communities police are animal welfare inspectors and may be asked to attend a complaint and report on the situation," he said.

"The Animal Welfare Branch has been working with the Australian Veterinary Association, Animal Management in Remote and Rural Communities, shire councils and NT Police to improve animal welfare across the Territory."

Darwin vet Stephen Cutter, a board member of Animal Management in Remote and Rural Communities, said the service did not reach Wadeye.

These fu*king Abbos! They have no regard for any life what so ever!
SO nobody gets punished for breaking the law by hurting animals because the animals have to have a proven owner!

About time we round up some of these boong "animals" and throw their babies against the wall, skin them alive and laugh and say "this animla doesn't have an owner"!

Belgian Jewish Leader Slams 'Nazi' Ban on Kosher Slaughter

Extract: Amid discussions on limiting ritual slaughter of animals in Belgium, a leader of the country's Jewish community pleaded with lawmakers not to "repeat the Nazis' acts." The statement Thursday by Philippe Markiewicz, president of the Consistoire organization of Belgian Jewry that is responsible for providing religious services, was unusual because Jewish community officials rarely draw comparisons between present-day issues and the Nazi occupation, which remains a sensitive subject in Belgium. "The last assault on ritual slaughter was in October 1940 under the Nazi occupation because they knew how important it was for Jews," Markiewicz said during an address in the city of Namur ...
