Soldiers of Odin, Finland: Vigilante group of men 'protecting women'

FINLAND IS a country struck by fear and paranoia. But a group of men calling themselves the Soldiers of Odin claim it is justified.

The far-right group patrol the streets of Tampere, Finland, in a bid "to keep women safe".

The group is expanding across Finland following a wave of sexual assaults, allegedly carried out by refugees and asylum seekers on New Year's Eve.

Other reported sexual assaults across Germany have helped fuel support for the far right group of vigilantes.

As Europe is gripped by the biggest refugee crisis since World War II, Finland is a nation struggling to deal with a growing refugee problem.

One member only known as Ilkka, 33, told The Washington Post he believed the refugees, many of whom come from Muslim backgrounds, did not respect his country's women.

"I have four daughters, and they used to be safe in Finland," he said. "We need to do something about it."

The group believe Finland needs to halt the influx of refugees who don't assimilate with the western way of life.

The Soldiers of Odin, whose name derives from a Norse god, insist their patrols are needed to protect the peace in the sparsely populated nation of 5.5 million, which wasn't a major destination for migrants until 32,500 people applied for asylum last year.

Since then, volunteer street patrols linked to Neo-Nazi groups have emerged in several Finnish towns claiming to protect locals from what they call "Islamic intruders", a trend the Finnish government has condemned.

The tension between locals and refugees is noticeable in Tampere, which has seen more than 4000 asylum seekers arrive in just six months.

According to the Post, even foreign born locals are seeing a change with one even intervening between two refugees who were pushing themselves onto a Finnish woman.

"Some of them coming now have a lot to learn," he said. "They do not understand a woman dressed like that."

However critics warn the rise of groups such as the Soldiers of Odin only fuel further hatred, fear and myths about the refugee crisis as Europe begins to put up borders against further migration. [more ...]
