... Hasbara Fellowships was started in 2001 by the right-wing Zionist organization Aish HaTorah and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Its declared goal is to train students outside of Israel how to promote the Israeli state's image on their respective campuses. Aish HaTorah supports illegal Israeli settlements within the Occupied Palestinian Territory ...  "Hasbara", which is the term used to describe Israel's public relations efforts, is widely seen as a euphemism for Israeli state propaganda. When a government is engaged in criminal behaviour, it is helpful to have students on campuses of higher learning in allied countries to serve as de facto ambassadors ... I have come to realize that Hasbara Fellowships is simply the tip of the iceberg of a global propaganda effort aimed at silencing criticism of Israel's criminal behaviour.

You always hear about Israeli attempts at media manipulation. Everyone knows it's going on but usually the process happens through cyber insurgents like those involved with Giyus (and its media monitoring software, Megaphone). Now [Jan. 2009], we know that the Israeli foreign ministry itself is orchestrating propaganda efforts designed to flood news websites with pro-Israel arguments and information.

Dr Andre Oboler is is CEO of the Online Hate Prevention Institute. He also serves as co-chair of the Online Antisemitism working group of the Global Forum to Combat Antisemitism and an expert to the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Antisemitism. He is a Distinguished Visitor for the IEEE COmputer Society. He is the former Director of the Community Internet Engagement Project at the Zionist Federation of Australia. He has previously served as Chair of the Lancaster District Diversity Festival, National Secretary of the Union of Jewish Students (UK), a Deputy on the Board of Deputies of British Jews, an invited observer on the board of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, and as a charity trustee for the Lancaster University Chaplaincy Centre and the National Postgraduate Committee. Dr Oboler holds a PhD in Computer Science from Lancaster University and an LLM(JD) from Monash University.
