THE SAGA OF ERNST ZÜNDEL

Ernst Zündel (1939-2017) was a German-born publisher, author, and civil rights activist.

In 1983, Sabina Citron, founder of the Canadian holocaust remembrance association, filed a private complaint before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal against Zündel for a 28 page pamphlet he had published in 1977 called "Did 6 Million Really Die?"

In 1984, the Ontario government joined the criminal proceedings against Zündel based on Citron's complaint, and Zündel underwent two criminal trials in 1985 and 1988 for the charge of "spreading false news."

To wage the legal battle that was forced upon him, Zundel brought together an impressive all-star international team of researchers, historians, scientists, legal specialists, scholars,  and experts to aid in his defense.

As a result of the two trials, an enormous quantity of evidence and testimony challenging the prevailing historical narrative was presented to the court under oath and thereby made part of the permanent public record.

Prior to the trial, the jewish defense league, now classified as a terrorist organization, protested the trial, made numerous threats on Zündel's life, and planted a pipe bomb at his house in an attempt to silence his testimony from seeing the light of day.


Zündel filed a pre-trial motion that sought to drop the charges on the basis of free speech.

The judge denied the motion, claiming, "Such freedoms were not absolute, and there wasn't an unbridled right to say what you think."

Raul Hillberg, star witness for the prosecution and foremost holocaust expert, admitted under oath that "no written record exists that h|tler ever ordered the mass extermination of the jews" and that there is "no single report about gas chambers or correspondence to prove it"


Arnold Friedman, a key witness to the prosecution, who was at Auschwitz, testified he "saw prisoners marched towards the gas chambers and saw smoke and flames rise from the chimney"

Upon cross examination, he stated he "never actually witnessed any mass executions or gassings."

Rudolph Vrba, an Auschwitz escapee, wrote in his memoir that 12,000 jews were killed per day in the camp and he had personally witnessed the gassings.

He then testified that his memoir was dramatized and served as an "artistic representation rather than a historical event."


Robert Faurisson, a professor of literature, testified for the defense that there was no physical evidence of gas chambers, mass execution orders, 6 million was a lie, and that the structures that were currently standing at the camps were actually reconstructions.

Russell Barton testified on behalf of the defense that during his time stationed with the Red Cross at the Bergen Belson camp,, he saw no evidence to support a German policy of systematic extermination and testified that the deaths were primarily a result of starvation and typhus.


Thies Christophersen was sent to Auschwitz as ascientist researching the development of synthetic rubber.

Working side by side with the inmates, Christophersen testified that Auschwitz was a clean and happy work camp, and there was no evidence whatsoever of gas chambers.
